Mumbai: Union minister Narayan Rane, son quizzed by police in Disha Salian case
By PTI
MUMBAI: Union minister Narayan Rane and his MLA son Nitesh Rane were quizzed by the police here for several hours on Saturday in connection with a case registered against them for allegedly making slanderous and misleading statements about the death of Disha Salian, late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s former manager.
Rane and his son, both BJP leaders, arrived at the Malvani police station in the western suburbs around 1.45 pm, and left around 10.45 pm, nine hours later.
The Union minister’s supporters thronged outside the police station when he arrived.
The Malvani police had earlier sent a notice to Nitesh Rane to appear before the investigating officer on Thursday.
His father was asked to appear on Friday.
But their lawyers had said that as the state legislature was in session, the two leaders would appear before the police on Saturday.
A court here on Friday had granted interim protection from arrest till March 10 to both Union minister Rane and his son.
The Ranes had filed anticipatory bail applications before the Dindoshi sessions court in suburban Malad fearing arrest in the case.
According to the FIR registered by Malvani police, Union MSME minister Rane made certain remarks about Disha Salian’s death at a press conference on February 19 where his son was also present.
Salian allegedly committed suicide by jumping off a high-rise in suburban Malad on June 8, 2020, six days before actor Rajput (34) was found hanging at his apartment in suburban Bandra.
Speaking to reporters after leaving the police station on Saturday night, Narayan Rane claimed that after the deaths of Salian and Rajput, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray called him twice and requested him not to talk about Salian’s death.
Officials from the chief minister’s office or spokespersons of the Shiv Sena, Thackeray’s party, were not available for comments immediately.
Narayan Rane, a former Shiv Sena leader himself, turned a bitter critic of Uddhav Thackeray after falling out with him and leaving the party in 2005.

Disha Salian’s parents demand action against politicians for maligning daughter’s name
By PTI
MUMBAI: The parents of deceased Disha Salian, the former manager of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, met the chief of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women (MSCW) here on Wednesday and demanded action against Union Minister Narayan Rane, his son Nitish and others who were spreading false news about their daughter’s death.
Disha’s parents Vasanti and Satish Salian met MSCW chief Rupali Chakankar at the commission’s office in suburban Bandra, and expressed their distress over the ongoing defamatory news about their late daughter, an official said.
The Salians have stated that they will not be able to survive in the society with respect if such false news was spread on news channels, and hence, they demanded action against concerned people, he said.
Following the meet, the commission has taken their demand seriously and assured them of justice, the official added.
Days earlier, Union minister and BJP leader Narayan Rane had addressed a press conference in which he made certain claims regarding Disha’s death.
However, despite the emotional appeal made by Disha’s family members to politicians to refrain from maligning her name by questioning the circumstances surrounding her death, claims and counter-claims on the issue are being made, with Maharashtra BJP president Chandrakant Patil saying that the truth behind Disha’s death will be exposed after March 7.
Earlier this week, the MSCW had issued a notice to the Mumbai Police in connection with Disha’s alleged suicide and directed them to file a reply in the next two days, after Rane claimed that she was raped and murdered.
Salian (28) allegedly committed suicide by jumping from a high-rise building in suburban Malad on June 8, 2020, six days before Rajput (34) was found hanging at his apartment in suburban Bandra.

Maharashtra Congress questions CBI’s ‘silence’ over probe into death of Sushant Singh Rajput
By PTI
MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Congress on Thursday questioned the Central Bureau of Investigation’s “silence” over the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, a year after it took over the probe into the case.
The party alleged that the national investigation agencies were being used by the Centre for its own “political agenda”.
Rajput, 34, was found hanging from the ceiling of his apartment in Mumbai’s Bandra area on June 14, 2020, and the CBI took over the probe into the case in August last year.
“It’s been a year today since CBI took over investigation of unfortunate death of Sushant Singh Rajput from Bihar police. Registration of FIR by Bihar police was against article 177 of CRPC. Supreme court also had expressed satisfaction in the overall investigation by Mumbai Police,” Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant tweeted.
He said it has been more than 300 days now since the AIIMS panel ruled out murder.
“CBI is maintaining deliberate silence. This mockery of investigation by national investigation agencies is an apt example of how these agencies are being used by Modi government for their political agenda,” he alleged in a tweet.
In another tweet, Sawant claimed that Gupteshwar Pandey (former Bihar DGP) was being used to further political agenda of the BJP, which was to “malign” the image of the Mumbai police and “destabilise” the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra.
“BJP stooped to the lowest possible level when they openly gave murder, rape angles and used Sushant’s death in Bihar elections as well,” the Congress leader alleged.
There was a “coordinated attack” on the MVA government, claimed Sawant, whose party shares power with the Shiv Sena and NCP in Maharashtra.
“Some pliable channels were asked to keep peddling murder theories. BJP leaders kept defaming Maharashtra. CBI and other agencies kept leaking fake info. Thousands of fake twitter, FB and YouTube accounts were created by BJP IT cell,” he further alleged.

Film based on Sushant Singh Rajput: Delhi HC issues notice on appeal by late actor’s father
By PTI
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday issued notice on an appeal filed by late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s father challenging a single judge’s order refusing to stay the release of the film ‘Nyay: The Justice’, or to restrain anyone from using his son’s name or likeness in movies.A vacation bench of Justices Anup Jairam Bhambhani and Jasmeet Singh sought response from the movie’s director Dilip Gulati and producers Sarla Saraogi and Rahul Sharma and others.
The high court, however, refused to pass any interim order on the appeal by Krishna Krishore Singh.
The bench noted the submission of senior advocate Chander Lal that the film has been released on a website and a mobile app on June 11 as scheduled.
Senior advocate Harish Salve, representing Rajput’s father, argued that the producer and the director of the film have commercially exploited the life story of the late actor who allegedly died by suicide at his Mumbai home last year.
Salve argued that the single judge has misdirected, misapplied and misinterpreted law laid down by the Supreme Court in the Puttaswamy case (Right to Privacy).
At the outset, the counsel appearing for the director of the movie told the court that the film has been released on the OTT platform named Lapalap original, as scheduled.
Salve, however, said: “This is some obscure platform and only god knows what kind of website is this.”
He said the movie is going to infringe upon the right to privacy and the right to a fair trial and with each passing day, it is causing damage to the reputation of the actor.
“The film is trying to portray his life. What exactly happened to him is still under investigation. You cannot jump the gun,” Salve said.
The high court had earlier sought to know whether ‘Nyay: The Justice’, purportedly based on Rajput’s life, has been released as scheduled on June 11 after both the director of the film and the actor’s father gave contradictory statements on the aspect.
The single judge had on June 10, refused to stay the release of several movies, including ‘Nyay: The Justice’, saying these films are neither portrayed as biopic nor factual narration of what transpired in his life.
“Posthumous privacy right is not permissible”, it had said in its interim order on a plea by Rajput’s father to restrain such films.
The single judge had earlier said it found merit in the submissions of producers and directors that if information of events that have occurred is already in the public domain, one cannot plead any violation of the right to privacy on a movie inspired by such events.
Some of the upcoming or proposed movie projects based on his son’s life include, ‘Suicide or Murder: A star was lost’, ‘Shashank’ and an unnamed crowd-funded film.
The court had directed the filmmakers to render complete accounts of the revenue earned from the films, if any case of damages is made out in future and listed the suit for completion of pleading before the joint registrar.
It had said the producers and directors claimed the films to be a fictional rendition of true events surrounding the lives of film/TV personalities, including Rajput who was found dead at his home in Mumbai.
The investigation is still on.
The court had said it did not find merit in the plaintiff’s contention to restraint on the strength of his right to fair trial relating to the unnatural death of his son, saying no foundation is set up to demonstrate how the films would impair the trial.
It had termed as a misconceived plea that the content of the film is defamatory and will damage his and his son’s reputation.
The suit has claimed that in case a “movie, web-series, book or any other content of similar nature is allowed to be published or broadcasted, it would affect the right of the victim and deceased for a free and fair trial as it may cause prejudice to them”.
It has also contended that Rajput being a well-known celebrity, “any misuse of his name/ image/ caricature/ style of delivering dialogues also amounts to infringement of the personality right vested with the plaintiff besides amounting to acts of passing off”.
The contentions of Rajput’s father have been opposed by the filmmakers of the upcoming and proposed movies.
