  • Boys trained hard and prepared well, says SRH skipper David Warner ahead of KKR clash

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Ahead of their match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) skipper David Warner said that the boys have trained hard and they are ready for the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League.

Warner-led side had won five out of their last six games to qualify for the playoffs in the 13th edition of the tournament and the team will be looking to carry forward the momentum in this year’s IPL.

“Really excited to get out, we had a practice session and the boys are ready to go…. they trained hard and prepared well. Had two good practice games. We are ready to come out and light it up hopefully,” Warner said in a video posted by SRH on Twitter.

“We know our supporters through social media and they are extremely supportive, I wish they could come but I know they are supporting us 100 per cent and we appreciate their support. Hopefully, we can entertain you by winning some games,” he added.

on Saturday, England batsman Jason Roy arrived in Chennai for the IPL. Roy was signed by SRH ahead of the tournament as a replacement for Mitchell Marsh. The Australia all-rounder made himself unavailable for the entire season owing to personal reasons.

Roy will remain in seven days of quarantine as per BCCI’s SOPs before joining the squad.

Over the years, SRH has depended heavily on skipper Warner and he has consistently delivered. With 548 runs in the 13th edition, the captain once again led the Hyderabad unit’s charge. And it will be a delight for the SRH team management that opening partner Jonny Bairstow has also been in tremendous form.

When it comes to the bowling department, Warner has one of the best line-ups at his disposal. While Bhuvneshwar is back and showed his prowess in the recently concluded series against England, T Natarajan stole the show in the last edition and was rewarded with a national call-up. Not to forget Sandeep Sharma’s swing bowling and Rashid Khan’s spin.

  • Great to have Bhuvneshwar Kumar back in team, says Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner

    By PTI
CHENNAI: Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner on Friday said the return of senior India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar will strengthen his side which is already quite balanced in all departments.

Bhuvneshwar played just four games in last year’s IPL in the UAE after sustaining a hip injury but he is currently in top form after an excellent show for the country during the white-ball leg of the England series at home.

“Our team is pretty balanced and there are going to be some selection headaches which is always good,” Warner said on the Twitter handle of SRH.

SRH play their first match on Sunday against Kolkata Knight Riders here.

“It is great that Bhuvi is back. He has had a fantastic series against England. We have a lot of depth in bowling and firepower in batting.”

The swashbuckling Australia opener said the slow pitches in Chennai and Delhi will suit his team.

“We are playing in Chennai in Delhi in our first 8 or 9 games. The wickets there ill be tad slow which will suit our style of play,” said Warner who has come out of a mandatory quarantine. He said he did some running inside his hotel room during quarantine to keep himself fit.

“They gave me a big enough room and I had a little bit of running inside it.”

SRH reached the play-offs in the last edition in the UAE where they lost to eventual runners-up in the Qualifier 2.

Bhuvneshwar, on his part, said he was looking to feature in a full season this time.

“It’s good to be out of quarantine. Feels that the last IPL was just a few days back. I am not thinking of any new things but will just focus on the simple things and use my experience and bowl my variations, like that,” he said.

“I was not there for almost the whole IPL last year and looking forward to play the whole season this time and hopefully contribute for the team.”

Holder will now remain in seven days of quarantine as per BCCI’s SOPs before joining the squad.

  • IPL 2021: David Warner asks fans for ideas to kill time in quarantine

    By ANI
CHENNAI: Australia opener David Warner, who joined his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise SunRisers Hyderabad in Chennai on Friday, asked fans to suggest things which he can do to kill time during week-long quarantine.

The Hyderabad-based side’s skipper will be in quarantine for the next seven days in his hotel room as per BCCI’s SOPs for IPL 2021.

The Warner-led side had won five out of their last six games to qualify for the playoffs in the 13th edition of the tournament and the team will be looking to carry forward the momentum in this year’s IPL.

Taking to Instagram he shared a video of himself and wrote, “I’ve arrived and ready to go but one problem I need some ideas to get through the next few days of quarantine!! Please give me some ideas please comment below. #boredinthehouse #india #cricket.”

“I’m just waking up after a massive massive sleep, arrived yesterday afternoon here in Chennai. Got some 6-7 days to get through quarantine. I need some ideas, please comment below give me some ideas funny stuff, silly stuff whatever it is. Netflix shows, I need something,” he said in a video.

On Thursday, Warner posted a picture with his wife Candice Warner on social media and said “last wine together” and added it was time to pack the bags and head to India.

“Our last wine together for a few months, blessed to have spent some quality time at home but it’s time to pack the bags and head to India. Love you lots darling @candywarner1 #cricket #ipl #india #missyou,” Warner wrote in an Instagram post.

Warner is the third-highest run-scorer and highest among foreign players in the tournament. So far, he has racked up 5,254 runs from 142 matches at an average of 42.71. The southpaw has slammed four tons and 48 fifties in the league.

SRH will begin their IPL 14 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 11.

  • The late riser of Sunrisers Hyderabad

It was possibly the most spectacular meltdown of IPL 2020. Chasing 127 against Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad cruised to 56/0 in 6.1 overs and the win increasingly looked like a formality. Then came the sucker punch of losing all 10 wickets for the next 58 runs, turning their remaining three league games into must-win affairs.

Desperate times demanded desperate measures. SRH played a gambit by removing the dangerous opener Jonny Bairstow to include Kane Williamson, bolstering a faltering middle-order. But who would replace Bairstow, not just an opener but also the team’s regular wicketkeeper? They turned to Wriddhiman Saha, who had, until then, played just one game where he scored 30, from 31 balls.

But Saha knows what it takes to walk a tightrope. He got a chance in the Bengal Ranji team only because Deep Dasgupta had signed up with the rebel Indian Cricket League. He made his Test debut as a batsman only because Rohit Sharma injured himself before the toss. And he became a Test regular only once MS Dhoni had decided to hang up his whites. It was no different this time around.

Just three games into his late starting eleven re-entry, Saha has become the unlikely trump card for SRH. In those three matches, Saha has top-scored for his team twice and also notched two half-centuries. Called up to fill in for a more reputed name in white-ball cricket, Saha has done the star turn, playing a crucial role in helping SRH defeat all the other three play-off qualifiers – Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians – in their last three must-win games.

“Very smart batting. Improvised his shots after picking the line and length of the ball. There was no slogging at all. Played a fantastic innings which I thoroughly enjoyed watching,” Sachin Tendulkar exclaimed on Twitter after watching Saha’s effort that earned him a Player of the Match award.

But when it came to talking about himself, Saha was humble as ever. “I got the opportunity for the second time this year and I took chances in the powerplay for the team, and that’s it. It’s easy to play when there’s Warner at the other end. In the powerplay I just play my natural cricketing shots,” Saha said.

  • Don’t think it is possible that Ravi Shastri was unaware about Rohit Sharma’s situation’

The controversy over Rohit Sharma not getting selected for the Australia tour saw a new twist on Tuesday when the right-handed batsman stepped out to play for Mumbai Indians against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. Rohit was kept out of the three India squads because he was believed to injured, but the batsman at the toss said that he is ‘fit’.

“I don’t think that it is possible that Ravi Shastri did not know about Rohit Sharma’s situation,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz. “Even if he is not a part of the selection committee, the selectors must have spoken to him a day or two days ago regarding what is he thinking, and taken his feedback and inputs.

“I am surprised to see that a player who is ready to play for the franchise has not been selected to play for the country. This is surprising and mismanagement from the BCCI. They should have taken all the information that if he can play for his IPL team, then he should be kept in the Indian team,” Sehwag said.

“If he got injured, they could have called in a replacement for him. But he was not kept in India’s squad, this I don’t understand. This is a strange year. Now, what you will do? He played this game against SRH. He will play the playoffs games. He is saying I am fit. Then why didn’t you pick him.”

  • Gautam Gambhir Turns Nostalgic as Skipper Returns to Kolkata

Kolkata skipper Dinesh Karthik will face a big test when a struggling KKR lock horns with a resurgent Delhi Daredevils, led by double title winning former KKR skipper Gambhir.

After back-to-back defeats, Karthik-led KKR will be desperate for a revival, while Delhi will hope to continue their momentum after snapping a two-match losing streak in style against Mumbai Indians.

Kolkata had made a winning start to their campaign against Royals Challenger Bangalore but successive defeats to Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the next two matches have put them in a spot of bother.

Delhi, on the other hand, lost to Kings XI Punjab in their opener and then went down against Rajasthan Royals in a rain-hit match. But the Gambhir-led side bounced back in style against Mumbai with Jason Roy smashing an unbeaten 91 in his debut match for DD.

DD’s Kolkata leg fixture means their Team India speedster Mohammed Shami is all set to return to his home town for the first time after his wife had accused him of infidelity and domestic abuse last month a controversy that had hogged the headlines.
