  • SRH set RCB 142-run target

    ABU DHABI: Royal Challengers Bangalore restricted Sunrisers Hyderabad to a modest 141 for seven in their Indian Premier League match here on Wednesday.

    Opener Jason Roy (44) and skipper Kane Williamson (31) resisted the RCB attack with fighting knocks while Jason Holder (16) played a useful cameo down the batting order.

    Harshal Patel (3/33) and Dan Christian (2/14) shared five wickets between them for SRH.

  • IPL 2021: SRH seal a narrow four-run win over RCB

    ABU DHABI: Sunrisers Hyderabad sealed a narrow four-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in Match 52 of the IPL 2021 at Sheikh Zayed Stadium here on Wednesday. Hyderabad defended 142 against a Bangalore batting line-up which threatened briefly to chase down the target.

    Bangalore were given an early jolt with Bhuvneshwar Kumar trapping Virat Kohli in front with an incoming delivery in the first over. Daniel Christian’s promotion to three backfired as he chipped a catch to mid-off off Siddarth Kaul. KS Bharat slammed two boundaries before falling to gloving behind off Umran Malik in the seventh over.

    Rashid Khan’s first ball to Glenn Maxwell was hoicked over deep mid-wicket in the eighth over. When Khan returned for his next over, Maxwell took on him again, slog-sweeping over long-on for a six followed by a wristy sweep through deep mid-wicket. In between, Malik was beating Maxwell for pace.

    Maxwell’s partnership of 54 with Devdutt Padikkal ended in the 15th over as a direct hit from a sliding Kane Williamson at cover caught the right-hander short of his crease while taking a quick single. Padikkal’s painstaking struggle to break free ended when he holed out to deep mid-wicket off Khan in the 17th over.

    Shahbaz Ahmed took eleven off Malik in the 18th over, including two boundaries, to bring the equation to 18 runs in the last two overs. Ahmed was dropped by Kumar at long-on in the start of the 19th over but pulled straight to mid-wicket on the fourth ball off Jason Holder.

    With 13 needed off the final over, AB de Villiers slammed a six straight down the ground off Kumar. But Kumar conceded just one run off the final ball to give Hyderabad a slim win.

  • Family congratulates SRH pacer Umran Malik after excellent show in debut game against KKR

    NEW DELHI: SunRisers Hyderabad pace sensation Umran Malik was in tears as his family congratulated him on an excellent debut in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday night. The Jammu and Kashmir cricketer’s family also wished him luck for the upcoming games.

    “Umran, congratulations to you for getting a chance to play in the IPL. I keep praying for you, my prayers are always with you. Just keep performing well,” his mother said in a video posted by SRH on Twitter.

    “Umran, you have got an opportunity to play in the IPL. Our prayers are always with you. We hope you are happy, wherever you are. Entire Jammu and Kashmir is happy for you,” his father said.

    Sharing his joy, Umran’s brother said: “Congratulations you are getting a chance to play in the IPL. Everyone is proud of you, we are eagerly waiting to see you on television. Best of luck brother.”

    His sister said she was proud of his effort in the opening game. “Congratulations Umran for getting a chance to play in the IPL. I pray that you give your 100 per cent and make us feel proud,” she said.

    Umran impressed one and all with his quick pace to rattle the opposition batters on Sunday night. Umar, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir, clocked two deliveries over 150 kmph on the speed gun and his fastest ball was 151.03. As a result, he is now the only Indian in the top ten for this season to deliver the fastest balls.

    The 21-year-old clocked a delivery at 146 kmph speed in his very first over, and he then entered 150s twice on the speed gun.

    In fact, SRH skipper Kane Williamson had also praised him and said: “We’ve been facing him in the nets, and it’s something quite special. He’s got a lot of pace, he runs in and goes hard. He racked up some fast speeds as well, which is pretty special. What a talent!”

    ABU DHABI: Assured of a play-off berth, Royal Challengers Bangalore would look to inch closer to a top two finish in the league stage when they play Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL here on Wednesday. Eyeing their first IPL title triumph, RCB are currently placed third in the pecking order with 16 points from 12 games.

    Delhi Capitals are leading the standings ahead of Chennai Super Kings. A win on Wednesday will definitely boost RCB’s confidence ahead of their final group game against DC on Friday. If RCB win both their remaining two games, they will move to 20 points and have a chance of finishing in the top two.

    After suffering two defeats — against Kolkata Knight Riders and CSK at the start of the second leg, RCB bounced back in style, registering a hat-trick of wins to seal their place in the play-offs. And the Virat Kohli-led side would look to keep the juggernaut rolling in the competition.

    Even though he is yet to make a big score post the tournament’s resumption, Virat Kohli looked good during his stays in the middle and so did the skipper’s young opening partner Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a 40 in their last match.

    But star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been phenomenal for RCB in the second phase, scoring his third straight half-century in the last game. Maxwell hit a 33-ball 57 to guide RCB to 164 for 7, a target which they defended confortably in the end.

    Batting down the order this season, AB de Villiers hardly got time to sparkle but the move provides RCB the kind of cushion that other teams lack. RCB’s bowling unit too responded brilliantly to the team’s call in the last three games with the likes of Mohammed Siraj, George Garton and Harshal Patel doing the job in the pace department.

    The spin unit is being spearheaded by Yuzvendra Chahal, who has overcome his past struggles with some very impressive spells this season. SRH, on the other hand, had a poor outing this season and are already out of the competition, languising at the bottom of the eight-team standings with just two wins out of 12 games.

    SRH have registered just one win — over Rajasthan Royals — out of five game so far in the second leg. They would be looking to finish their campaign on a positive note by registering twos consecutive wins. SRH had dropped their 2016 IPL-winning skipper David Warner after axing him from captaincy but that didn’t change the fate of the team as Williamson has not been able to revive the fortunes of the side.

    Batting continues to be SRH’s weakest link, especially in the absence of Jonny Bairstow. In the bowling department, Jason Holder has time and again given them the breakthroughs, but senior India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Siddarth Kaul have disappointed.

    Young Kashmiri cricketer Umran Malik impressed with his pace on his IPL debut in their last game against KKR but needs more game time to polish his skills. Leg-spinner Rashid Khan remains SRH’s biggest weapon against any opposition, but he hasn’t had nough runs to play with most times.

  • SRH pacer Umran Malik clocks 151 kmph against KKR, impresses one and all

    DUBAI: SunRisers Hyderabad might have lost the Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), but pacer Umran Malik impressed one and all with his quick pace to rattle the opposition batters.

    Malik, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir clocked two deliveries over 150 kmph on the speed gun and his fastest ball was 151.03.

    He ended up conceding just 27 runs in his four overs. Shubman Gill played a knock of 57 runs as KKR defeated SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets with two balls to spare here at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. With this win, KKR consolidated its position at the fourth spot and the side now has 12 points from 13 games.

    Earlier, a spirited bowling performance helped KKR restrict SRH to 115/8 in the allotted twenty overs. For Eoin Morgan-led side, Tim Southee, Shivam Mavi, and Varun Chakravarthy returned with two wickets each while for SRH, Kane Williamson top-scored with a knock of 26 runs.

    Sunrisers Hyderabad had brought in medium-pacer Umran Malik as a short-term COVID-19 replacement for T Natarajan for their ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 campaign in the UAE.

    Natarajan had tested positive for COVID-19 before the team’s fixture against Delhi Capitals on September 22. Before playing against KKR, Malik had played one T20 and List A match for Jammu Kashmir and he picked a total of four wickets.

  • Challenging season but can’t overreact: SRH captain Kane Williamson after loss to KKR

    DUBAI: Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson feels that one shouldn’t overreact or try to over-compensate after what has been challenging season with the franchise set to finish last in eight team table. Williamson took over captaincy from David Warner but SRH’s fortunes remained the same.

    “The surfaces have varied a lot and I think we have seen that teams that have been successful have been able to adapt to these surfaces. Once again, it is important for us not to overreact and overcorrect. It has definitely been a challenging season for us in that aspect,” Williamson said after the defeat against KKR.

    Williamson said that when performance is not great, focus is shifted on a lot of things which adds to the problems. “I suppose personally, standing in as skipper in the second half of the tournament, you try to do have a collective focus. There are a number of things around the corner that can take the attention of the players, but you known that as a team, we are fortunate to be here,” Williamson further said.

    Williamson was disappointed that the couldn’t build on powerplay overs. “We got through the powerplay and there was an opportunity to build towards a 140-150 total and obviously we fell short of it. Williamson said after SRH went down by six wickets here on Sunday for the team’s 10th defeat of the ongoing IPL seaso,” he said.

    The surface didn’t allow any batter to settle down, said Williamson. “It was a challenging surface, it was hard to get your rhythm on because of the tennis ball bounce. Particularly with the new ball, it sat on the surface and it reflected on the low strike rates which have been quite interesting in the second half of the tournament,” he said about Sunday’s game.

  • ‘It’s not about who …’: Warner’s cryptic message amidst confusion over absence from SRH dug-out

    NEW DELHI: Out-of-form SunRisers Hyderabad opener David Warner has in recent times failed to make it to the playing XI in the second half of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League in UAE. While the coaching staff has said it is looking to give youngsters opportunity, fans feel Warner has been handed a raw deal. The former skipper on Thursday evening posted a message on social media that has seen the debate intensify further.

    Taking to Instagram, Warner posted: “It’s not about who is real to your face, It’s about who stays real behind your back.” The post also had a few ‘thumbs up’ emojis.

    He also posted a short video of him watching SRH’s game against Chennai Super Kings on television and that has seen fans further debate on whether he should at least have been in the dug-out sharing his experience with the young players.

    Speaking after the win against Rajasthan Royals on Monday, SRH coach Trevor Bayliss confirmed that the management is looking to give new players in the squad a chance to make a name for themselves, looking at how the side cannot make the playoffs this season.

    “We can’t make the final so have made a decision that we want the young players to experience not just the matches but time at the ground, around the set-up, and for this match we made the decision. He was not the only experienced player we left back at the hotel,” Bayliss said during a post-match press conference.

    “We have a number of young players that haven’t been to the ground. Even as reserves. We wanted to give them an opportunity to come along and experience that. That may continue for a few more games yet. We don’t know,” he added.

    Further speaking about Warner, Bayliss said: “We have got to sit down in a day or two and pick a team and pick a squad of 18. That’s just the way it is. Dave is obviously watching the game back in the hotel and giving the guys support. It is the same as everyone else. We are all in this together.

    “Look that certainly has not been discussed. It is something that..this is the last year before a major auction. Those decisions will be made further down the line. He has been a great contributor to Hyderabad Sunrisers for a number of years now. He is very well respected with the number of runs he has scored. I am sure he has got a lot more runs in him yet in the IPL.”

  • Another six from Dhoni, another CSK victory: ‘Men-in-yellow’ reaches IPL play-offs

    SHARJAH: Chennai Super Kings produced a convincing performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad to maintain their remarkable consistency this season and sail into the Indian Premier League play-offs here on Thursday.

    The bowlers, led by Josh Hazlewood (3/24) and Dwayne Bravo (2/17), restricted SRH to 134 for seven after M S Dhoni opted to bowl first on a slow surface.

    Chasing the total, in-form openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (45 off 38) and Faf du Plessis (41 off 36) shared a sublime 75-run stand to give CSK an ideal start.

    A mini collapse in the middle overs made the chase interesting before CSK got the job done in 19.

    4 overs with Dhoni (14 not out off 11) hitting the winning six and bringing back memories of his heydays.

    The three-time former champions thus ended the chase, scoring 139 for four, for a convincing six-wicket win.

    With their fourth win in as many games since the tournament’s resumption, CSK showed not making the play-offs last season was just a blip in their successful IPL history.

    The Sharjah pitch, which produced high-scoring games last year, has been a complete contrast this season with its slow nature making stroke making difficult.

    Batting in the second innings got easier with the fast-rising Gaikwad displaying supreme skills.

    The confidence with which he played star SRH spinner Rashid Khan was most impressive.

    He charged down the track on Rashid’s second ball and dispatched it for a straight six.

    He also used his feet well against left-arm spinner Abhishek Sharma for another crisp boundary.

    Du Plessis too hit some cracking boundaries before falling to a tired shot.

    From a commanding 103 for one, CSK slumped to 108 for four, making the dressing room slightly nervous.

    However, Ambati Rayudu (17 not off 13) avoided a tense finish for his team with a six and four off Bhuvneswar Kumar in the 19th over.

    M S Dhoni remained unbeaten at the other end.

    Earlier, SRH innings never got the momentum it needed.

    Wriddhiman Saha played some delightful shots in his 46-ball 44 but the majority of the SRH batsmen struggled to get going.

    Saha’s two sixes off Deepak Chahar in third over were the highlight of his innings.

    The first one was a hoick over midwicket and the second one was more like a lofted straight drive that cleared the ropes comfortably.

    His opening partner Jason Roy fell cheaply, caught behind off Josh Hazlewood as he went for a wild slog.

    Skipper Kane Williamson struck two fours in his run-a-ball 11 before he was trapped in front by Dwayne Bravo with a full ball that swung away slightly to thud into the New Zealander’s pads.

    SRH were left reeling at 74 for four after a well-set Saha top-edged one off Ravindra Jadeja to be caught by Dhoni.

    SRH, who reached 97 for four in 15 overs, badly needed a final flourish in the last five overs.

    Abdul Samad (18 off 14) and Abhishek Sharma (18 off 13) hit a few sensational shots before Hazlewood removed them in the 17th over.

    CSK were brilliant in the death overs conceding only 37 runs.

  • Bottom-placed SRH face uphill challenge against table toppers CSK

    SHARJAH: Virtually out of the play-off race, bottom-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad will hope to keep their new-found momentum intact when they face table toppers Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, here on Thursday.

    Kane Williamson led from the front with an unbeaten half-century to help Hyderabad return to winning ways after five losses on the trot.

    It lifted the morale of the side as they have suffered eight losses from 10 matches.

    The biggest decision for Williamson-led think tank has been to drop their big hitting opener David Warner, who aggregated just 181 runs at an average of 24.37.

    This was twice this season that their only IPL-winning (2016) skipper was axed this season after losing captaincy to the New Zealander.

    With speculation rife about the Aussie’s future at his favourite franchise Hyderabad, the onus would be on the Kiwi skipper to revive the fortunes of the Orange Army.

    English opener Jason Roy seized the opportunity on his debut to set it up with a quick 60 before Williamson sealed the challenging chase of 165 with nine balls to spare.

    The trio of Siddarth Kaul, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jason Holder also shone at the death without conceding a boundary in the last 17 balls and also dismissed the dangerman Sanju Samson in the final over to contribute to their first win in five months.

    Even as the odds are high against them, the Williamson-led will look to win all their remaining four matches and also pray that the other results go in their favour.

    For a side that relies heavily on their overseas recruits, the onus will be on the likes of Wriddhiman Saha and Priyam Garg to step up.

    “We can say the performance was improved. There was clarity in roles to, want to build on this, want to see the younger players take their opportunity and enjoy the cricket,” Williamson had said after their seven-wicket win.

    On the match against table toppers CSK, Williamson said, “It’s a new venue, and CSK, top of the table, tough to beat. But as we know every team in this tournament is good. Hopefully we can play with a smile on our faces.”

    The MS Dhoni-led side on the other hand are coming on the back of a hat-trick of wins and have virtually sealed their Play-off chances.

    It was Ravindra Jadeja who once again proved to be their game-changer on Sunday as his eight-ball 22 runs cameo pulled off last ball two-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday.

    The duo of South African great Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad have shown great chemistry up front while the likes of Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu form the core of their batting.

    Young Indian opener Gaikwad especially has been in the form of his life with scores of 40, 38 and 88 not out as he has given the side strong starts in the power-play.

    The bowling department may look to be their weak link as it remains to be seen if Hyderabad is able to capitalise on it.

    West Indian star all-rounder Dwayne Bravo was rested against Kolkata as it would be no surprise if he returns to the side in place of Sam Curran who leaked 56 runs from his four overs against KKR.
