  • IPL 2021: Mumbai sign off from the tournament with a 42-run win against SRH

    By PTI

ABU DHABI: Mumbai Indians may not have restricted Sunrisers Hyderabad to under 65 to have a shot at making playoffs. But that didnt stop the defending champions from defeating Hyderabad by 42 runs in Match 56 of IPL 2021 here at Sheikh Zayed Stadium here on Friday. After missing the bus for playoffs, Mumbai reduced Hyderabad from 64/0 in five overs to 100/4 in 9.1 overs. Eventually, Hyderabad ended at 193/8, thanks to stand-in captain Manish Pandeys unbeaten 69.

Chasing a mammoth 235, Hyderabad raced to 70/1 in power-play, crashing the hopes of Mumbai sneaking into the playoffs. Jason Roy crunched six boundaries before falling to Trent Boult in the final over of power-play. In the next over, Abhishek Sharma made 33 off just 16 balls before holing out to deep mid-wicket off James Neesham.

Pandey started off by slamming Krunal Pandya for two boundaries in the seventh over. But Mumbai continued to strike with the ball as Piyush Chawla took out Mohammad Nabi with a googly in the next over. Abdul Samad fell cheaply in ninth over, holing out to long-on off James Neesham.

Pandey stitched a partnership of 56 runs with Priyam Garg before Bumrah took out Garg with a slower delivery in the 16th over. Though Pandey notched up his half-century, Jason Holder holed out to long-on off Coulter-Nile in the next over. With Rashid Khan and Wriddhiman Saha falling cheaply, Hyderabad’s chase was as good as over.

Pandey continued to be the lone ranger in a match whose fate was sealed in the first innings.

Brief scores: Mumbai Indians 235/9 in 20 overs (Ishan Kishan 84, Suryakumar Yadav 82, Jason Holder 4/52, Abhishek Sharma 2/4) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 193/8 in 20 overs (Manish Pandey 69 not out, Jason Roy 34, James Neesham 2/28, Jasprit Bumrah 2/39) by 42 runs

  • Umran Malik’s gift of speed

    Express News Service

150 kmph. 151.9 kmph, 153 kmph. In a league where Lockie Ferguson, Anrich Norjte, Kagiso Rabada and Adam Milne are around, it is Umran Malik, the 21-year-old fast bowler from Jammu & Kashmir who has recorded the fastest ball of the tournament. Net bowlers going on to get a chance in the first XI has been a common theme since the pandemic, but for Umran, who was bowling with tape balls and playing tennis ball cricket in Srinagar only a couple of years ago, this has been quite a journey. Not to mention he has just played one match for his state at the senior level.

Growing up in an environment where there wasn’t infrastructure to pursue cricket, he was fortunate that in Abdul Rashid Malik, he had a father, who allowed him to pursue what he wanted. “After two daughters, I always wanted a boy. We were blessed with a baby boy almost 12 years after my second daughter so everyone loves him a lot,” senior Malik says recollecting the days where he would come home only to find Umran bowling at his two sisters, Shehnaz and Saima, and mother, Seema Baby. “He wouldn’t even allow them to have food or prepare. He never touched the bat… all that he did was bowl, bowl and bowl.”

When opportunity allowed him to play outdoors, Umran, who spent a lot of time indoors growing up, was a sought-out bowler. He even travelled to Punjab and Delhi to feature in tennis-ball tournaments. “He always had pace,” says Muneeb Munaf, who has played age-group cricket among others with and against Umran. “But, he was not like this. He has changed a lot in recent times for the good. Earlier, he used to jump high and was wayward. So we (batsmen) knew he would bowl at least one bad ball per over. So it was a big surprise for us to see him bowl this well in the IPL. He has definitely worked hard and we are already fretting at just the thought of playing him in the nets,” adds Muneeb.

While his bowling and hardwork have been praised by the Sunrisers management, Muneeb says there have been days many of them feared he wouldn’t realise his talent: speed. Although it came naturally to him, thanks to his quick action, Muneeb says playing in tape ball cricket has helped him a great deal. “He is even quicker in tape ball. Here we play one vs one game. Just batsman and the bowler. And imagine him bowling yorkers at that pace. It was a nightmare for batsmen. Some people even used to place bets up to `1 lakh on Umran winning one vs one contests. The only thing lot of us used to tell him was to take cricket seriously. He was too playful and wouldn’t even go to gym. We are just happy he is doing it now.”

The first big turnaround in his career came three years ago when Umran went for a trial camp overseen by former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who was player-mentor for Jammu & Kashmir. There were two things that Pathan still remembers that stood out about Umran. “One his pace and the other, his jump.

He has a beautiful action and has good alignment at the top, his arms are closer to the body. But the only issue was he used to jump a lot in the delivery stride and lose control. His body was not in control, all the energy was going into the jump which was going away from the batter. It needs to go towards the batter. So I just worked on that aspect and told him to stop tennis-ball cricket. Full credit to him because he worked on the changes. Now he has to play domestic cricket regularly. His pace has excited, but he needs to grow. That is important,” Pathan says.

On Friday night, there will be another opportunity to see him bowl howitzers. Tune in.

  • Used to bowl fast from the very starting, Irfan Pathan also helped me: SRH pacer Umran Malik

    By ANI

ABU DHABI: SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) pace sensation Umran Malik has said that bowling fast comes naturally to him and ever since the starting, he has bowled quickly to disrupt the batters’ concentration.

SRH pacer Umran Malik clocked 153kph to bowl the fastest delivery of IPL 2021 against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday. Malik achieved this feat in the 4th delivery of the 9th over against Devdutt Padikkal. RCB batter got the outside edge and scored a run on the fastest delivery of IPL 2021.

“From the very starting, I used to bowl fast. When I played cricket with Cosco ball, I used to bowl fast then also. We used to play one over matches and I used to run in and bowl fast yorkers. In 2018, U-19 trials came and I was bowling, the selectors saw me. I was bowling with jogger shoes, then my friend gave me spike shoes and I then came into the U-19 team. Then I played Under-23 cricket,” Malik told teammate Bhuvneshwar Kumar in a video posted on iplt20.com.

“In 2018, I was practicing regularly. After Under-23, I played Vijay Hazare and Ranji Trophy. I thank the SRH franchise for giving me an opportunity. Irfan Pathan came and he told me where I can improve. I was scared at first when I had to bowl to Warner and Williamson in the nets. I prayed to god that I just bowl good balls. I kept on learning and this has helped me,” he added.

A spirited bowling performance saw Kane Williamson-led SRH defeat RCB by four runs here at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Wednesday. Bhuvneshwar Kumar defended 13 off the final over to help his side register a thrilling victory.

“I was determined to take a wicket against RCB and I just wanted to take a wicket,” said Malik.

Earlier, Jason Roy played a knock of 44 runs as SRH posted a total of 141/7 in the allotted twenty overs. For RCB, Harshal Patel returned with the figures of 3-33.

SunRisers Hyderabad will next take on Mumbai Indians on Friday at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

  • Was trying to bowl wide yorkers to AB de Villiers: SRH pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar

ABU DHABI: SunRisers Hyderabad pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar said that his plan was to bowl wide yorkers to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter AB de Villiers in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 encounter.

A spirited bowling performance saw Kane Williamson-led SRH defeat RCB by four runs here at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Wednesday. Bhuvneshwar Kumar defended 13 off the final over to help his side register a thrilling victory.

“The hand is fine. I got hit thrice after I dropped a catch as well. When AB bats, I was thinking about the process. I was trying to bowl wide yorkers,” Bhuvneshwar told host broadcaster Star Sports after the game ended.

“I bowled a yorker at the stumps and got hit for a six and then again went back to wide yorkers. If you look at the score at three venues it hasn’t been much. We did think we were 10-15 short though,” he added.

SRH pacer Umran Malik clocked 153kph to bowl the fastest delivery of IPL 2021 against RCB. Malik achieved this feat on the 4th delivery of the 9th over against Devdutt Padikkal. The RCB batter got an outside edge and scored a run on the fastest delivery of IPL 2021.

  • Pace is Umran Malik’s biggest asset, he has great control: SRH all-rounder Jason Holder

    By ANI

ABU DHABI: After registering a thrilling four-run win over Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, SunRisers Hyderabad all-rounder Jason Holder said that Umran Malik’s biggest asset is his pace.

A spirited bowling performance saw Kane Williamson-led SRH defeat RCB by four runs here at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Wednesday. Bhuvneshwar Kumar defended 13 off the final over to help his side register a thrilling victory.

“The first thing to mention is his pace, that is his biggest asset. He has been consistent in training and he has been giving us a hard time in training. He is very hard to get hold of, he has been deceiving the batters through his pace and that extra pace adds a boost to any bowling attack,” said Holder during a virtual post-match press conference.

“It is good to see his control as well, a lot of guys who have bowled quick over the years, generally they can be erratic but he has been pretty consistent,” he added.

Umran Malik clocked 153kph to bowl the fastest delivery of IPL 2021 against RCB. Malik achieved this feat in the 4th delivery of the 9th over against Devdutt Padikkal. RCB batter got the outside edge and scored a run on the fastest delivery of IPL 2021. Talking about his own performance, Holder said: “Well I just try to prepare well. Funny enough I did not practice on Tuesday, I tend to watch the footage and see patterns on where I can set the field when I bowl. I think batting is just about the situation, the partnership I formed, in the end, was crucial,” he added.

Earlier, Jason Roy played a knock of 44 runs as SRH posted a total of 141/7 in the allotted twenty overs. For RCB, Harshal Patel returned with the figures of 3-33.

  • Umran Malik certainly is special: Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson

    By ANI

ABU DHABI: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Kane Williamson believes that pace sensation Umran Malik is special after the Indian youngster clocked 153kph to bowl the fastest delivery of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) held the nerve to defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by four runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jason Holder, Siddarth Kaul, Umran Malik, and Rashid Khan picked one wicket each for SRH while Devdutt Padikkal and Glenn Maxwell played innings of 41 and 40 respectively for the RCB.

Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was restricted to the score of 141/7 as Harshal Patel scalped three wickets while Dan Christian and George Garton returned with two and one respectively. Yuzvendra Chahal also bagged one wicket. Jason Roy and Kane Williamson played innings of 44 and 31 respectively as SRH’s middle-order batters failed to bank on after such a good start.

Kane Williamson, SRH skipper and Player of the Match during the post-match presentation said: “It’s been a tough season and it’s great to see some of those small improvements. To see those small adjustments was good, we thought that total was competitive and we saw that fight throughout the ball as well. I was just trying to maximize the powerplay and the ball was holding on the surface and we were fortunate to build a partnership and we knew things wouldn’t happen quickly from a bowling perspective, but we knew if we held our nerve and stay there for longer periods, we can build that pressure. Game was getting tight and dismissing him (Maxwell) one way or the other was the key, they are a fantastic side and even though we are not in the contention it was great to see the fight.”

“He certainly is special (on Umran Malik). We saw him in the nets in the last couple of seasons and he is a real competitor and is proving to be effective even on slower surfaces. He’s got a lot of mates in the team as well and that helps in sharing the knowledge. It’s a great opportunity for the younger guys to get involved and hopefully we will keep learning and we go again on Friday,” he added. (ANI)

  • Glenn Maxwell’s run-out was probably turning-point of match against SRH: RCB director Mike Hesson

    By PTI

ABU DHABI: Australian allrounder Glenn Maxwell was scoring at a good pace and his runout was probably the turning point of their match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, said Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson.

Maxwell smashed three fours and two sixes in his quickfire 25-ball 40 to keep RCB in the hunt but he was run-out due to a poor call by opener Devdutt Padikkal in the 15th over. RCB’s chase derailed after that as they ended with 137 for six in their 20 overs for a narrow four-run loss. SRH had posted 141 for 7.

“…the fact that Glenn was scoring at a rate of over 10 an over, he is probably the only batsman who really had fluency on the surface and he was set, so he was probably the man we wanted at the crease, so look it probably was,” Hesson said when asked if Maxwell’s run-out was the turning point.

It was SRH skipper Kane Williamson, who produced the sensational effort while fielding at cover. He collected the ball quickly and hit the bull’s eye while still in motion as Maxwell was way short of the crease.

“An exceptional piece of work in terms of that run out and yeah probably did turn the game. We just left a little-bit too much for us to do at the end. We weren’t quite good enough for those key moments to get over the line,” said said Hesson, who has coached New Zealand in the past, at the post-match press conference.

Another highlight of the game was the bowling by rookie SRH pacer Urman Malik, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir.

Asked how did RCB prepare for Malik, Hesson said, “We looked at his pitch maps and in terms of, we know he bowls good pace, what sort of lengths and the general areas he looks to bowl, he tends to bowl hard length, so that was pretty clear in terms of what we were expecting today.

“Looks like he has got a good bouncer. He is a very promising bowler. In terms of preparation, it is more about watching a bit of footage, looking at the pitch maps and then making that adjustment to the surface out there,” he added.

Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Jason Holder also lavished praise on Malik, who was constantly hitting the 150 kmph mark. “I think, the first thing to mention is his pace, that’s his asset. He is just consistent in training and given us quite a hard time, he is very hard to get hold of. It is good to see his control as well. He is being pretty consistent and he has grouped really good deliveries together,” he said.

According to Holder, Abhishek Sharma gave the team a “pretty good” start after being asked to open the innings and it is unfortunate that he couldn’t not carry on a little further. Holder also said dismissing Virat Kohli in the first over was also a plus for his side.

“You have got your best bowler in the world in Rashid Khan to match-up against their best batters, we got Virat (Kohli) in the first over, which was very crucial. We know what type of player he is, so to get him out pretty early was a plus for us and it put pressure on them,” said the West Indian.

Holder said that the SRH bowlers were good in the death overs. “Our bowlers were excellent in the end. All the years Sunrisers has had a trend for good death bowling and good bowling in general and it showed today,” he said.

“Siddharth Kaul was outstanding, young Urman Malik and obviously myself and Bhuvneshwar finishing off nicely, so it was a good team effort and hopefully we can continue to go in this way and finish well against Mumbai (Indians),” he signed off.

Sunrisers Hyderabad will play their final match of the competition against Mumbai Indians on Friday.

  • IPL 2021, MI vs SRH preview: With an eye on play-offs spot, Mumbai face Hyderabad in ‘must win’ game

    By PTI

ABU DHABI: Five-time champions Mumbai Indians will need to outclass bottom-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last league match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) here on Friday, knowing fully well the tricky situation they have found themselves in their bid for a play-offs spot.

Courtesy their eight-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals, the defending champions are currently at the fifth spot, with 12 points from 13 games, with a net run rate of -0.048. But, Kolkata Knight Riders, with a net run rate of +0.294, are sitting on the fourth spot with 12 points from 13 games and will play Rajasthan Royals on Thursday evening in Sharjah.

A win for KKR against RR will take them to 14 points and also improve their net run rate further. In that scenario, MI may find it very difficult to qualify for the play-offs even if they beat SRH as the gap in their NRR with KKR is not small.

Asked if it is an advantage to play a team like SRH on the last day, MI captain Rohit Sharma had said, “All eight teams are capable of beating each other. But the good thing is that KKR plays before us, so we will know what to do.”

In case KKR lose, then a win will be enough for MI to seal the fourth play-offs spot as they then will have 14 points. In any case, Rohit (363 runs) will have to lead from the front again. He has got starts but has not been able to convert them, and the great white-ball exponent would be itching for a big score.

And so would be his opening partner Ishan Kishan (157 runs), whose confidence would have been boosted from his unbeaten fifty against RR.

MI’s horribly out of form middle order, comprising the supremely talented Suryakumar Yadav (235 runs), all-rounders Hardik Pandya (117 runs), Kieron Pollard (232) and Saurabh Tiwary (115 runs), will have to come good.

On their day, they can take any opposition attack to the cleaners and SRH’s would be no exception. MI team management would, however, be pleased with the performance of their bowlers, who had restricted RR for a meagre 90 and are unlikely to tinker with the combination.

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah (19 wickets) was exceptional and would be raring to bowl his yorkers again. He would need support from Trent Boult, Nathan Coulter-Nile, who grabbed four wickets in the last game, and spinner Jayant Yadav.

The Sunrisers, who are already out of reckoning for a play-offs berth, will look to finish the tournament on a high. Skipper Kane Williamson was back among the runs and would be keen to start from where he left on Wednesday.

But the Kiwi will need support from others like Jason Roy and relatively inexperienced guys like Abhishek Sharma, Priyam Garg, Abdul Samad and aggressive Wriddhiman Saha.

With the addition of pace sensation Urman Malik, SRH have one of the best bowling attacks and the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan and Siddharth Kaul would have to be at their best to contain MI’s explosive batting line up.

Also, the contribution of West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder, both with the bat and ball, could be decisive.

    Teams:

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (captain), Quinton de Kock, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Aditya Tare, Anmolpreet Singh, Chris Lynn, Saurabh Tiwary, Anukul Roy, Simarjeet Singh, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, James Neesham, Jayant Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Marco Jansen, Yudhvir Singh, Adam Milne, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohsin Khan, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Piyush Chawla, Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Kane Williamson (captain), David Warner, Manish Pandey, Sherfane Rutherford, Wriddhiman Saha, Shreevats Goswami, Rashid Khan, Vijay Shankar, Mohammad Nabi, Abhishek Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddharth Kaul, Khaleel Ahmed, Urman Malik, Basil Thampi, Sandeep Sharma, Shahbaz Nadeem, Abdul Samad, J Suchith, Jason Holder, Virat Singh, Priyam Garg, Kedar Jadhav, Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, Jason Roy.

    Match starts at 7:30pm IST.
