Mumbai’s music scene owes much to Salim Merchant, the powerhouse vocalist behind hits like ‘Ishq Wala Love’ and ‘Shukran Allah.’ But his story begins at home. On March 3, in the heart of the city, Salim entered a household alive with music. His father, a talented composer and keyboard maestro, was his first guru. ‘Music started early in my life because I was always watching my father,’ Salim once shared in an interview.

Blending traditions, Salim studied Indian classical forms alongside Western classics and synth mastery. This eclectic mix birthed songs infused with pop energy, Sufi mysticism, and qawwali fervor – sounds that define modern Bollywood.

Teaming up with brother Sulaiman elevated them to legends. They penned music for blockbusters ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ and ‘Fashion,’ and even scored the official 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem. Their remix magic touched Western stars, reworking Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ and ‘Judas’ with desi flair.

Salim’s compositions dazzle in films: ‘Rab Rakha’ from ‘Love Breakups Zindagi,’ ‘Marjaavaan,’ ‘Moula Le Le Meri Jaan,’ and ‘O Re Piya’ from ‘Fashion.’ His voice lent emotion to ‘Jigar Da Tukda.’ As a judge on ‘Indian Idol,’ he nurtured talents, extending his influence.

From familial sparks to global stages, Salim’s career exemplifies dedication. His enduring hits remind us that true music transcends borders, echoing the timeless tunes of his father’s legacy.
