Venice’s art scene buzzed with excitement as Odisha’s Padma Shri recipient Sudarsan Pattnaik made history as India’s lone artist at Contemporary Venice 2026’s 18th edition. Hosted at the historic Palazzo Albrizzi-Cappello, the expo—masterminded by ItsLiquid Group and ACEIT Venice—brings together 80 creators from more than 30 nations under curator Luca Curci’s vision.

Pattnaik unveiled his ‘Jugalbadi’ paintings, a mesmerizing blend of beach sand and vibrant colors applied to canvas. This series narrates his journey from a young painter to a sand art maestro whose works grace international shores. Each piece pulses with themes of natural beauty, human sentiments, ecological balance, and the delicate dance between people and planet.

Innovating over the last five years, Pattnaik’s mixed-media approach marries sand’s transience with canvas’s enduring quality, creating hypnotic visuals. Exhibitions in major Indian cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Delhi have been met with standing ovations from crowds and critics.

The inauguration saw Pattnaik’s artworks steal the spotlight, earning effusive commendations from Curci and ItsLiquid’s leadership. These creations powerfully underscore that artistic ingenuity can champion eco-consciousness, foster cultural bridges, and promote worldwide stewardship.

From Puri’s Neeladri Beach, where he crafts iconic sand masterpieces, Pattnaik has long been a global icon. His latest feat—a record-breaking giant Santa Claus sand sculpture last Christmas—further cements his legacy.

This Venetian showcase reaffirms Pattnaik’s role as a trailblazer, merging India’s sandy heritage with modern artistry to spark global dialogues on sustainability and creativity.
