  • Sterling K Brown to act as lead in biopic of African-American lawyer Scipio Africanus Jones

    Searchlight Pictures has acquired the rights to The Defender, an upcoming drama on Scipio Africanus Jones, the late African American lawyer, judge, and philanthropist. The project has actor Sterling K Brown set to play Jones.

    Written by E Nicholas Mariani, the film will be directed by George Tillman Jr. The latter is best known for directing the Barbershop film series, The Hate U Give, Notorious, and Men Of Honor.

    The Defender is a period drama that will focus on Jones’ involvement in the defence of the eighty-seven men accused of murder after the 1919 Elaine race riot and massacre in Arkansas, in which he risked his life and career in the process. His involvement in the case earned Jones historic acclaim.

    Brown will also produce the film under his Indian Meadows banner, alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps. Writer Miriani will executive produce beside Danielle Reardon, Dantram Nguyen, and Katie Goodson-Thomas.

    Brown is best known for his roles in This is Us, Black Panther, Frozen II, and for notable guest roles in Insecure, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

  • Sterling K Brown, Mark Duplass to star in sci-fi film ‘Biosphere’

    LOS ANGELES: “This Is Us” star Sterling K Brown and “The Morning Show” star Mark Duplass are joining hands for a sci-fi movie titled “Biosphere”. Mel Eslyn, who has backed films like “The One I Love” and “Outside In” for Duplass Brothers Productions, makes her feature directorial debut with the upcoming movie.

    Eslyn and Mark Duplass have penned the film, which has completed production. The details of the project’s plot are being kept under wraps. “Biosphere” is produced by Duplass Brothers Productions and Zackary Drucker, who previously co-directed the Duplass Brothers-produced docuseries “The Lady and the Dale”.

    Eslyn is also the president of Duplass Brothers Productions, founded by Mark and his brother, “The Chair” actor Jay Duplass. She previously directed three episodes of the HBO anthology show “Room 104” and produced the series.

  • Sterling K. Brown, Randall Park join hands for action-comedy

    WASHINGTON: American actors Sterling K. Brown and Randall Park have joined hands for an untitled action-comedy set up at Amazon Studios.

    According to The Hollywood Reporter, apart from starring in the project, Sterling and Randall will be serving as the producers via their respective banners, Indian Meadows and Imminent Collision.

    Alex Tse, who co-created the Hulu series ‘Wu-Tang: An American Saga’, will serve as the scriptwriter.

    The project is being described as in the vein of ’48 Hrs.’, the 1982 movie starring Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

    The script will revolve around the story of two estranged childhood best friends, to be played by Sterling and Randall, who will find themselves on opposite sides of the law after growing up. Framed and on the run, the two must survive each other long enough to clear their names and stop an international criminal enterprise.

    Hieu Ho and Michael Golamco of Imminent Collision, Danielle Reardon will also serve as executive producers.
