As waves of ethnic violence continue to rock Manipur, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh turned to spirituality for solace on Thursday. At Imphal International Airport, he bid farewell to Haj pilgrims and made a poignant request: pray for peace back home.

The group of 379 selected pilgrims, managed by the state Haj Committee, flew out to Kolkata before proceeding to Medina. With 172 leaving Wednesday and 207 on Thursday, the departures marked a significant annual event despite the state’s challenges.

Biren Singh, wishing them safe journeys and robust health, delved into the grim realities plaguing Manipur. ‘In these trying times filled with sorrowful events, I beseech you to beseech God for peace and steadiness in our land,’ he stated, emphasizing communal efforts toward recovery.

Dignitaries including Tourism Minister Khuraijam Lokendro Singh, local MLA Kongkham Robindro, and others graced the send-off. Minister Lokendro took to Facebook, calling it an ’emotional and proud moment.’ He lauded the pilgrimage as an emblem of faith and solidarity, laden with collective aspirations.

‘God grant them mercy, wellness, and serenity on this holy path. May their supplications usher in tranquility, growth, and joy for Manipur and India,’ he posted.

This gesture highlights how leaders are leveraging religious occasions to rally for unity. In a state fractured by conflict between communities, such calls for prayer might bridge divides. The pilgrims’ voyage, fraught with its own spiritual trials, now bears the additional weight of a state’s healing prayers, potentially amplifying voices for calm.
