The IPL 2026 season opener is set for March 28, and former South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis has laid out a blueprint for Sunrisers Hyderabad’s triumph. In a candid chat on GeoSuper, he highlighted the team’s batting strength while flagging critical bowling gaps.

Having lifted the IPL trophy in 2016 and reached finals in 2018 and 2024, SRH knows the taste of near-misses. Their recent seasons shattered batting records, but weak death bowling prevented silverware. Du Plessis likened them to a T20 World Cup-era West Indies – all guns blazing with the bat, yet short on match-winners with the ball.

‘Pat Cummins is a solid choice, but beyond him, who do I trust in the death overs or powerplay?’ he asked. For a winning campaign, SRH must outbat rivals consistently, pile on runs to set daunting targets, and let pressure do the rest when opponents bat second.

BCCI’s first phase schedule includes 20 matches. SRH starts with RCB on March 28, followed by KKR (April 2), LSG (April 5), and PBKS (April 11). Key players: Cummins (c), Head, Sharma, Klaasen, Harshal Patel, and overseas talents like Kamindu Mendis and Liam Livingstone.

As Hyderabad eyes redemption, du Plessis’ mantra – bat big, dominate, defend smart – could be the game-changer in this high-stakes season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are reportedly contemplating a surprising decision to release star batter Heinrich Klaasen, despite his impactful IPL 2025 performance. The franchise invested heavily in Klaasen, making him their highest-paid player last season. However, recent dip in form and his substantial salary are prompting a strategic review. This potential move could significantly free up crucial funds, enabling SRH to pursue Australian all-rounder Cameron Green in the upcoming auction. Adding to the speculation, fast bowler Mohammed Shami is also rumored to be on the trade block.

Klaasen was instrumental in SRH’s campaign, amassing 487 runs at an impressive strike rate of over 172, making him the team’s leading scorer. His ability to single-handedly change the course of a match has made the decision difficult for the management. However, a lack of consistent competitive cricket since his international retirement, coupled with a less-than-stellar showing in The Hundred 2025, has raised concerns about his current match-readiness and form. Retaining him at his high price point is now under scrutiny.

The potential acquisition of Cameron Green presents an attractive alternative. Green offers a complete package with his all-round capabilities in batting and bowling, along with significant long-term potential. Given the existing Australian connections within the SRH camp, including captain Pat Cummins and coach Daniel Vettori, a pursuit of Green seems plausible. Releasing Klaasen would unlock the financial resources necessary to make a strong bid for the dynamic Australian all-rounder, who could fill the crucial number four batting slot currently occupied by Klaasen.

Should Klaasen be released, he is unlikely to remain unsigned for long. His explosive T20 batting prowess remains undeniable, attracting attention from numerous franchises eager to secure his game-changing abilities. SRH now faces a critical juncture, balancing the retention of a proven match-winner against the strategic reallocation of resources for future squad building.
