WASHINGTON: Get ready to deep dive into the world of Squid Game once again. The streaming giant Netflix has officially renewed the popular show for its second season.

As per Variety, Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, confirmed season 2 during Netflix’s fourth-quarter 2021 earnings interview.

“Absolutely, the ‘Squid Game’ universe has just begun,” Sarandos responded when asked whether there would be a second season of the South Korean survival drama.

Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the first season featured an ensemble cast including Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Jung Hoyeon, and Oh Yeong-su. In the show 456 cash-strapped contestants are invited by a mysterious organization to compete in a series of children’s games with deadly consequences to win around USD 38.5 million.

The show recently registered a big win at the Golden Globe Awards.

NEW DELHI: Writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk, the brain behind the globally popular South Korean thriller “Squid Game”, says he is in talks with Netflix for a possible second and third season of the show.

The survival drama, starring Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon, HoYeon Jung, O Yeong-su, Heo Sung-tae, Kim Joo-ryoung and Indian actor Anupam Tripathi, revolves around a contest where 456 players, all of them in deep financial debt, are brought to a secret play to play a deadly children’s game for a chance to win 45.6 billion won prize.

“I’m in talks with Netflix over season 2 as well as season 3,” Hwang said in an online interview with Korean broadcaster KBS, as per a report in Korea Times. “We will come to a conclusion any time soon.”

It is the first time that the director-writer has hinted at the possibility of a third season of the biggest Netflix original series after he confirmed a plan to produce another season in a media interview last month.

He said the next season will feature the story of Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), the final winner of the deadly contest.

The series released on September 17 and soon became a global hit for the streamer, topping charts across the world to become the most-watched Netflix series of all time.

LOS ANGELES: The creator of Netflix’s “Squid Game” says the hit TV series will be back for a season two, even though most TV shows in South Korea run for just one season.

Due to the show’s global success, Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “I almost feel like you leave us no choice.”

“There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season,” he said at a red carpet celebration for the show Monday night.

“It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this, Gi-hun will be back and he’ll do something for the world,” explained Hwang.

Netflix has not formally announced a second season.

The series, starring Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun and others in the ensemble cast, centres on people who are so desperate for money that they agree to take part in a series of schoolyard games with a deadly twist.

The dystopian survival drama from South Korea is said to have become Netflix’s biggest-ever TV show.

With that success has come global recognition for its stars.

Model-turned-actress Jung Ho-yeon is used to traveling for the fashion world.

But this time when she flew from Korea to Los Angeles, she met her first fan at the airport, an immigration officer who asked her for her autograph.

Actor Park Hae-soo, who plays Jo Sang-woo in the series, said he “made the big decision” to start an Instagram account.

“Now I really wanted to communicate with the world and everybody, so I started my Instagram account,” said Park.

The lead actor, Lee Jung-jae has been working in Korea for over 25 years.

Now his life has changed because he’s also recognized on the streets of America.

“That’s amazing, right? People just go around and say hello,” said Lee.

“So I really don’t know how to respond to all the love. It’s so great to be able to meet the fans who have loved and watched the show so much.”

The cast and creator all have dreams of working in a Hollywood production someday, with Jung jokingly calling out, “Hey guys, call our agent!”.
