  • Mallikarjun Kharge asks Rajya Sabha chair to restore expunged parts of his speech

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, on Wednesday urged Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to restore the expunged parts of his speech on the Motion of Thanks on the president’s address. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Kharge said two pages from his February 2 speech were removed, leading to distortion of intent.

“I had raised certain points…they have been removed from the record,” he said, and emphasised that he had not taken anybody’s name nor violated any rules.

He cited several rules to support his argument against the removal of parts of his speech. The Congress leader added that he also did not made any remarks on “persons in high authority” which required to be expunged.

“I register my strong objection…I would like to request you to restore the expunged part in the House proceedings,” Kharge, who has also give a written note to the chairman on the matter, said.

Dhankhar said he would look into it and give his ruling. He also there is a book on ‘unparliamentary words’. On a suggestion from a Rajya Sabha member, the chairman also said he would be happy to constitute a committee to revisit the list of ‘unparliamentary expressions’. “I have received a written communication from the Leader of the Opposition. I have gone through it. I will give my ruling on it,” he said.

Dhankhar said Kharge had raised four points in his written communication. The first point relates to a word which is “unparliamentary” and was hence expunged. Points number two, three and four relate certain portion of Kharge’s remarks which were made after the Chair had announced “that nothing will go on record”.

Earlier in the day, Dhankhar said the House would meet on Saturday (February 10) in order to complete essential government business. There will be no Zero Hour and Question Hour on Saturday.

According to the original schedule, Friday would have been the last day of the ongoing Budget session.

  • JK Rowling slams Putin defending her against ‘cancel culture’

    By ANI

LONDON: British author JK Rowling has slammed Vladimir Putin after the Russian President made a reference, mentioning her in his latest speech.

As per Variety, Putin had stated on Friday that his country was being “cancelled” by Western culture, similar to how Rowling has faced criticism for her controversial anti-trans comments.

“They cancelled [J.K.] Rowling recently, the children’s author. Her books are published all over the world, [but they cancelled her] just because she didn’t satisfy the demands of gender rights,” Putin had said.

Responding to this comparison on Twitter, the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise author wrote, “Critiques of Western cancel culture are possibly not best made by those currently slaughtering civilians for the crime of resistance, or who jail and poison their critics,” followed by ‘I Stand With Ukraine’ hashtag. Putin had further also likened “cancel culture” to Nazis trying to burn books in the 1930s.

“We remember the footage when they were burning books. It is impossible to imagine such a thing in our country and we are insured against this thanks to our culture. And it’s inseparable for us from our motherland, from Russia, where there is no place for ethnic intolerance, where for centuries representatives from dozens of ethnic groups have been living together,” he said.

For several years now, Rowling has been surrounded by controversy due to her gender beliefs and a series of anti-transgender tweets posted in 2020. At the time the author had argued that discussing gender identity negates biological sex.

As per Variety, most recently, Rowling generated backlash for opposing a reform bill in Scotland that would make it easier for transgender people to legally change their gender.

  • PM Modi pauses his speech at Manali after a woman security personnel faints, asks his medical team to attend her

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Atal Tunnel on Saturday in Manali. During his speech at Manali, a woman security personnel performing her duties close to the stage fainted. PM Modi immediately stopped his speech and asked the security personnel standing there to help her. He also asked his medical team to attend her. This is not the first time PM Modi has stopped his speech to ensure medical assistance for someone. In January 2019 in Surat, PM Modi stopped his speech and asked for medical assistance for a cameraman who had fainted. Built by the Border Road Organization (BRO) that develops and maintains a network of roads across the Indian border, 9.02 KM long Atal Tunnel will reduce the time taken to travel from Manali to Leh by five hours. During snowfall, the Ladhak Valley cuts off from the rest of the country for six months. This tunnel will ensure connectivity all around the year.
