    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: Police have booked actor Sonu Sood for violating orders of the Moga additional district magistrate in connection with the model code of conduct.

A case was registered against Sood under section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code on Sunday in Moga district, according to an FIR.

Polling to the 117-member Punjab assembly was held on Sunday.

The Election Commission on Sunday had restrained the actor and philanthropist from visiting polling stations in Moga after receiving complaints that he was allegedly influencing voters.

However, Sood has denied the charges.

Sood’s sister Malvika Sood Sachar, who had joined the Congress last month, had been fielded from the Moga assembly seat.

Sood’s vehicle on Sunday had been impounded by police and a video surveillance team had also been deployed outside his residence.

According to the FIR registered at the Moga Police Station (City), police had got information that Sood was allegedly campaigning for his sister at Landeke village in Moga.

He was found sitting in the vehicle at the village.

By doing so, he had violated the orders of the additional district magistrate, it stated.

Moga Senior Superintendent of Police Charanjit Singh Sohal on Monday said Sood was not supposed to be there and that is why the action has been taken against him.

  • Sonu Sood’s sister Malvika joins Congress in Punjab, could contest from Moga Assembly seat

    By PTI

.CHANDIGARH: Actor-philanthropist Sonu Sood’s sister Malvika Sood on Monday joined the Congress, with Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi batting for her candidature from Moga for the February 14 assembly polls, saying the party’s sitting legislator Harjot Kamal will be suitably adjusted.

Malvika Sood’s joining the party will be a “game-changer”, said Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu, who along with Channi, travelled to the Sood residence in Moga district for the joining in of the actor’s sister.

“It is very rare that a party (state) chief and the chief minister both have gone to someone’s home to grant the honour, and she deserves it,” said Sidhu.

Sonu Sood and Malvika Sood met Sidhu and Channi at Moga, but the actor was not present at the press conference when his sister joined the Congress.

Kamal, who is learnt to be not happy with the party backing her candidature, was also conspicuous by his absence.

The actor had last year in November said that his sister would join politics.

Asked if Malvika Sood will fight the elections from the Moga assembly constituency, Channi said, “Is there anything left to say now”, clearly signalling that she is the party’s choice.

On questions from reporters about Kamal’s candidature, Channi said, “Harjot Kamal is our MLA, he is very talented. He is my brother. We have worked together in the party and the government. We will take him together and if there is need for an adjustment, we will do that.”

“He is an asset to our party and he will be taken along,” the chief minister said.

Channi said in the party, everyone is taken along and sometimes, if anyone feels disappointed, things are sorted out.

He said before coming to Moga he had spoken to Kamal and added that he would be meeting him in the evening.

Asked that the MLA Kamal has reportedly said that he always remained available to his constituents round-the-clock which Malvika Sood may be unable to do, Channi said Malvika Sood is a strong and brave young woman, and she will be there to serve the people at any hour of the day.

“It is a matter of great happiness for us that a young woman who has earned a name for herself by running an NGO and dedicated herself to the people’s service is joining our party,” Sidhu said while welcoming her into the Congress.

Sonu Sood, who hails from Moga, had earlier also said that his sister has done a lot of “amazing” work in the past.

The actor is known for his humanitarian works not just in India but around the world, both Sidhu and Channi said while talking to reporters.

Sonu Sood had grabbed the national spotlight for helping migrants reach their home states during the nationwide lockdown clamped in 2020 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking on the occasion, Malvika Sood said she has taken the political plunge to dedicate herself to serve the people.

She also praised Channi, saying he has worked very hard despite getting a short time of just over 100 days.

Referring to Malvika Sood’s joining, Sidhu said, “In the cricketing world, it is called a game-changer.”

“She is an young and educated woman, a noble person, and her education as software engineer will help her in her life ahead,” Sidhu said.

He said that he would also like to congratulate and thank Sonu Sood as his sister had decided to choose the Congress.

Channi said Sonu Sood has made Moga, Punjab and the entire country proud with his acting and with his humanitarian works.

“It is a good sign for the Congress and Punjab,” said Channi on Malvika Sood’s joining.

“Politics is service and Malvika will dedicate herself to serving the people. In the coming five years, you will see that Sonu Sood will be known as Malvika’s brother (and not the other way round),” he said.

“Welcoming Malvika Sood Sachar, sister of Social Worker & Actor, @Sonu Sood into the party-fold. I am sure Malvika will serve the people with full honesty and integrity and help spread the message of the Congress party at the grass-root level,” Channi later tweeted.

In his initiative during the 2020 lockdown, Sood had arranged transport facilities for migrant workers stuck in various places while returning back to their homes amid joblessness and the lockdown.

His humanitarian work was highly appreciated by the public.

The Election Commission of India had annulled the appointment of actor Sonu Sood as Punjab’s “state icon”, state Chief Electoral Officer S Karuna Raju had said on Friday in an official statement, with the Bollywood star later saying that he voluntarily stepped down as a family member was contesting the upcoming assembly polls.

Sood’s announcement of his sister entering politics fuelled speculation that she may contest the 2022 Punjab Assembly polls from Moga.

Sood, who hails from Moga district, said his sister has done a lot of amazing work in the past.

“We today officially want to say that Malvika will certainly come to serve Punjab,” Sood said addressing the media.

Asked about joining any political party, Sood said no decision has yet been taken in this regard.

“We have not yet taken a call about the party. Whenever the time comes, we will make sure that we will let you know,” he said.

  • BJP once praised Sonu Sood, now considers him tax evader: Shiv Sena on I-T action against actor

    By PTI

MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena on Friday slammed the BJP over the Income Tax Department’s action against actor Sonu Sood, saying that although the party earlier praised him for his work during the lockdown, it now considers him a “tax evader” after the Delhi and Punjab governments tried to join hands with him in his social work.

In an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, the Sena said the action against Sood was a foul play, which would boomerang the BJP, and said that the party that claims to have the highest number of members in the world, should also have a large heart.

The I-T officials had descended on the premises linked to Sood in Mumbai and some other places on Wednesday in connection with an alleged tax evasion probe, official sources had said.

“Filing false cases against the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) ministers, pressuring the state governor to withhold 12 members for their nomination to the state Legislative Council and raiding actor like Sonu Sood were signs of a small and narrow mind.

This is foul play and it is sure to boomerang one day” the Sena said.

During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sood came into limelight when he emerged as the ‘messiah’ of the poor migrant labourers, helping them return to their home states during the national lockdown and providing shelter and food to them, it added.

“The BJP then praised him and asked why the MVA government can’t do what Sood has been doing.

The BJP projected him as their own.

But when Sood became the brand ambassador of the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government’s educational programme, the I-T raided him,” the party alleged.

The ruling party in Maharashtra further said that BJP leaders had earlier remained present at all his programmes like setting up oxygen plants in 16 cities, his scholarship programmes.

Even Maharashtra Governor B S Koshyari called him to Raj Bhavan and praised his efforts.

But when Delhi and Punjab governments tried to join hands with him in his social work, the actor became a tax evader, the Sena added.

“It has become a norm to trouble people not linked to the BJP through investigating agencies,” the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said.

Kejriwal had said on Saturday that Sood had the prayers of lakhs of families of India who got his support in difficult times.

  • Actor Sonu Sood withdraws plea from SC against HC order on ‘illegal’ construction

    By PTI
NEW DELHI:The Supreme Court on Friday directed civic authorities to consider and decide a plea of Bollywood actor Sonu Sood seeking regularisation of his alleged illegal construction at his residential building in Mumbai’s Juhu area.

Sood, who was in limelight for helping migrants reach homes during lockdown last year, withdrew his plea against the Bombay High Court order dismissing the case on alleged illegal construction at his building in Mumbai from a bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde.

The bench also comprising Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian, during the hearing, orally observed that no coercive action be taken against Sood until the civic authorities decide on his application for regularisation.

“Mukul Rohatgi, senior counsel appearing for the petitioners prays for withdrawal of this petition as also the civil suit…pending before Bombay City Civil Court at Borivili Division, Dindoshi, Bombay, in view of the application for regularisation filed pursuant to the notice dated 24.10.2020 under Section 44 of the Maharashtra Regulation and Town Planning Act, 1966,” the bench said in its order

“We direct the concerned Authorities to consider and decide the said application on its own merits and in accordance with law. Accordingly, the special leave petition and the civil suit being …are dismissed as withdrawn,” it added.

In the proceedings conducted through video conferencing, the bench was informed by Rohatgi that the actor would withdraw pleas from the top court and the lower court at Mumbai respectively and and seek a decision on his application for regularisation of alleged illegal construction from the civic body.

The high court had dismissed the actor’s appeal against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) notice to him over alleged illegal construction at his residential building at Juhu. At the outset, Rohatgi said that he has advised the actor to withdraw the plea and would rather seek the liberty that BMC decide his plea for regularisation.

“That is good advice Mr. Rohatgi. This is absolutely correct advice which does not happen very often. The Authorities to decide the application according to law,” said the bench in the proceedings conducted through video conferencing.

Sood and his wife had stated in their plea that his application for conversion has been approved by the Municipal Commissioner subject to Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) permission.

The plea had said the high court order of January 13, 2021 has been passed without considering the provisions of Section 43 (1) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966 and his application for conversion of residential premises into a residential hotel was submitted in 2018 before the department concerned.

The plea had contended that their application for conversion, which has been approved by the Municipal Commissioner subject to MCZMA, be directed to be decided by authorities concerned. “The petitioners have already stopped the work of internal renovation which require no permission as per the provisions of Section 43 of Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, therefore, the respondents may kindly be restrained from demolition of the renovation work already done in the building,” the plea filed by Sood and his wife had said.

He further stated that if the application of the petitioners for conversion is approved, the financial loss due to demolition will not be recovered in any manner and would cause miscarriage of justice to the petitioners.

The High Court, while dismissing the actor”s appeal and application, said, “Law helps only those who are diligent.” Sood’s lawyer had sought a time of 10 weeks to comply with the notice issued by the BMC in October last year, and requested the high court to direct the civic body to not initiate demolition action.

However, the high court refused and said the actor had ample opportunity in the past and if required, he could approach the civic body.

Sood had approached the high court earlier this month challenging an order of a city civil court at Dindoshi that had dismissed his suit against the BMC’s notice issued over the alleged illegal construction carried out by him.

The actor, in the interim application in the high court, had sought an order from the high court restraining the BMC from taking any coercive action against his residential property in Juhu area. “The petitioner (Sood) has not made any changes in the building that warrants permission from the BMC. Only those changes that are allowed under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act have been done,” Sood’s advocate had argued in HC.

As per the BMC, the Bollywood actor had carried out structural changes in the six-storey residential building ”Shakti Sagar”, and allegedly converted it into a hotel without taking requisite permissions. The BMC earlier this month also filed a complaint at the Juhu police station, seeking an FIR to be lodged against Sood for allegedly converting the residential building into a hotel without permission.

The complaint letter was sent to the police after the BMC inspected the building and found that Sood had allegedly not complied with the requisitions and was continuing unauthorised construction even after the notice was served to him in October last year.
