  • Home that inspired ‘The Conjuring’ sells for more than USD 1.5 million

    By Associated Press

BURRILLVILLE: The Rhode Island farmhouse that inspired the 2013 horror movie “The Conjuring” has been sold to a Boston developer who plans to keep it open to the public.

The 18th-century home in Burrillville sold for $1.525 million on Thursday, far higher than the $1.2 million asking price. “This purchase is personal for me,” buyer Jacqueline Nuñez, owner of WonderGroup LLC, told The Boston Globe. “It’s not a real estate development. It’s around my own beliefs.”

Nuñez and the couple who sold the home, Cory and Jennifer Heinzen, jointly announced the sale on Facebook.

Nuñez plans to continue the paranormal business the Heinzens started. Guests will be able to continue the nightly paranormal investigations, day tours will resume and there will be livestreamed events. The Heinzens, who bought the home in 2019, will remain involved.

The movie wasn’t filmed at the home but was based on the experiences of a family that lived there in the 1970s. Nuñez said she is not afraid of the house. “I don’t believe the energy here is malevolent. Things will happen here that will startle me, but not harm me,” she said. “I look forward to experiencing things.”

  • Degas, Picasso sculptures bring record prices in New York

    By AFP

UNITED STATES: A sculpture by Edgar Degas sold Thursday for $41.6 million at Christie’s in New York, the highest price paid at auction for a work by the French artist, while a bronze by Pablo Picasso also broke a record.

The Degas sculpture — “Petite danseuse de quatorze ans” — is a delicate bronze with a brown patina depicting a young ballerina in a muslin skirt with a ribbon in her hair.

It is not the original — which is on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington — but a cast made by Adrien-Aurelien Hebrard 10 years after the 1917 death of the impressionist.

That did not stop it from setting a new record for Degas, easily topping the previous high of 22.2 million euros set by another version of the same work in 2015.

The sculpture that sold on Thursday was one of 12 pieces from the collection of Anne Bass, an American businesswoman who died in 2020. She was the patron of several major American museums and the New York ballet, and was the wife of billionaire oil heir Sid Bass.

Among her collection were two paintings by American expressionist Marc Rothko, of which “Untitled (Shades of red)” sold for $66.8 million, and three works by Claude Monet. His “Parlement, soleil couchant,” a dark but luminous oil on canvas, sold for $75.96 million.

Christie’s also announced that Picasso’s “Tete de femme (Fernande)” became the artist’s most expensive bronze ever sold at auction, at $48.48 million.

The Spaniard held the record for the most expensive work of 20th Century artwork ever sold at auction until Monday night, when an iconic portrait of Marilyn Monroe by American pop artist Andy Warhol brought in $195 million. Picasso’s “Les Femmes d’Alger (Version ‘0’)” had previously set the record at $179.4 million in 2015.

  • Warhol’s ‘Marilyn’ auction nabs $195M; most for US artist

    By Express News Service

NEW YORK: Andy Warhol’s “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” sold for a cool $195 million on Monday, making the iconic portrait of Marilyn Monroe the most expensive work by a U.S. artist ever sold at auction.

The 1964 silkscreen image shows Monroe in vibrant close-up — hair yellow, eyeshadow blue and lips red — on a rich blue background. It’s also the most expensive piece from the 20th century ever auctioned, according to Christie’s auction house in New York, where the sale took place.

The Warhol sale unseated the previous record holder and another modern master, Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose 1982 painting “Untitled” of a skull-like face sold for a record $110.5 million at Sotheby’s in 2017.

Christie’s said an unnamed buyer made the purchase Monday night. When the auction was announced earlier this year, they estimated it could go for as much as $200 million.

“It’s an amazing price,” said Alex Rotter, chairman of Christie’s 20th and 21st-century art department. “Let it sink in, it’s quite something.”

“This is where we wanted to be, clearly,” said Guillaume Cerutti, CEO of Christie’s. “It proves we are in a very resilient art market.”

The proceeds of the sale will go to the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation Zurich, which put the painting up for auction. The foundation aims to help children with health care and educational programs.

Warhol created more than one image of Monroe; this particular painting has been exhibited in museums around the world.

  • First Captain America comic sells for $3.1 million at auction

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: 1940 comic marking Marvel superhero Captain America’s first appearance has been sold at an auction today for USD 3.1 million.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the price is just short of the record of USD 3.6 million, set in 2014 for Spider-Man’s first comic appearance.

The “Captain America Comics No 1” was sold as part of Heritage Auctions’ comics and comic art events.

The comic was released in December 1940, a year before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that would push the United States into World War II, and features one of the comics medium’s most iconic covers: the hero punching Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Comic legends Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created Captain America for Timely Comics, the predecessor to Marvel Comics.

Captain America aka Steve Rogers made his debut in Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011 with “Captain America: The First Avenger”.

Hollywood star Chris Evans essayed the role of the superhero. He reprised the part in standalone projects “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, and “Captain America: Civil War” as well as the ensemble films “The Avengers”, “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”.
