In the lead-up to International Women’s Day, Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan hosted the inaugural session of the Rashtriya Sevika Samiti’s two-day national conference ‘Bharatiya Nari se Narayani.’ Retired Delhi University professor Dr. Preeti Goyal, attending as chief guest, offered profound reflections on women’s roles in modern India.

A long-time member of the Samiti since childhood, Dr. Goyal recounted her journey: decades of teaching followed by voluntary retirement, all while staying committed to voluntary service. ‘This invitation feels special because of my lifelong bond with the organization,’ she said.

Addressing empowerment head-on, she asserted, ‘Women don’t need empowerment—they already are empowered. The real issue is societal mindset. Change must come from government policies and a shift among men.’

Observing ongoing transformations, Dr. Goyal noted, ‘Progress isn’t driven by mindset changes alone; women are pushing boundaries themselves. Some men have adapted, but full equality is absent. Women juggle home and work, doing more than their share—60% versus men’s 40%.’

Her perspective paints a picture of resilient women thriving despite imbalances. The conference provides a platform to amplify such voices, challenging stakeholders to foster genuine parity as India marks another Women’s Day.
