  • Kanye West drops out of Coachella Music Festival

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: American rapper Kanye West, whose name has been hovering over social media for several months, is again in the headlines owing to his decision to pull out of Coachella.

As reported by Variety, the reason for his cancellation is not clear yet, but it is speculated that Kanye had not rehearsed and was unprepared for his performance.

His decision comes as a surprise as the prestigious annual event is just 11 days away, and it’s unclear as to which artist would replace Kanye for his set. This announcement comes after a controversial past few months, where the rapper had also been barred from a planned appearance at the Grammy Awards, held earlier this Sunday, due to his ‘concerning online behaviour.’

The controversy blew when Kanye publicly attacked Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson online following Kim’s divorce from West.

Kanye, who was slated to perform at Coachella on April 17 and 24, had previously cancelled the closing dates of his 2016 Saint Pablo tour, and was hospitalised shortly afterwards. He had accepted it multiple times that he suffers from bipolar disorder, and the pattern of incidents establish the shift in his behaviour in recent months.

Coachella, having been headlined by Kanye in 2011, is North America’s largest music festival and has already sold out 125,000 per-day tickets.

The music festival scheduled to be held at the Empire Polo Ground in Indio, California, begins next week on April 15, with Billie Eilish and Harry Styles headlining the highly celebrated global event.

  • Twinkle Khanna comes under attack for her remarks on ‘The Kashmir Files’

    By PTI

MUMBAI: Author and former Bollywood actor Twinkle Khanna is being criticised on social media for making a tongue-in-cheek remark about the film “The Kashmir Files” in her Sunday column for a leading daily.

In her satirical column published on April 3 with the headline ‘Did Will Smith learn a one-tight-slap lesson from India?’ on the shocking turn of events at the 2022 Oscars ceremony, Khanna also wrote about how she was planning to register ‘Nail Files’, a title inspired by Vivek Agnihotri’s recently released film based on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley in the 1990s.

Under her nom de plume ‘Mrs Funnybones’, Khanna wrote that the potential film ‘Nail Files’ may revolve around a “disastrous manicure”, which she said would be “better than putting the final nail into the communal coffin”.

The film has been called out for its problematic politics by some critics and authors but that has not affected its box office collection as the movie, released on March 11, has minted Rs 331 crore, according to the figures given by the producers in a tweet.

The 47-year-old Khanna, who is the daughter of prolific Hindi cinema stars Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, was called out on social media by users who described her as a “shallow” Bollywood personality “devoid of morals”.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, a Kashmiri Pandit, appealed to the columnist to not be insensitive towards the plight of the community.

Commenting on her column, Pandit tweeted Monday evening, “@mrsfunnybones ma’am, you are too late. This film (#KashmirFiles) on the genocide of #KashmiriPandits has already hit the nail on the communal coffin of #IslamicTerrorism. Request you not be so insensitive towards the genocide of 7 lac #KashmiriPandits.

” Another user wrote, “She does seem daft and insensitive to say this. All the Bollywood fraternity are shallow and devoid of morals.”

Khanna’s comments come weeks after her husband and Bollywood star Akshay Kumar congratulated “The Kashmir Files” director on the success of the film, also quipping how it affected the box office business of his film “Bachchhan Paandey”, which was released on March 18.

Kumar, known for his pro-establishment stand as opposed to his wife’s, had last month at an event said Agnihotri has brought a “harrowing truth to light” through his film.

Khanna has been away from social media since Sunday after she shared the link to her column and retweeted it on her Twitter page.

  • Social media is anarchic, should be completely banned, says Gurumurthy

    By Online Desk

Social media is “anarchic” and a complete ban should be imposed on it as it poses a risk to “everybody’s image, national security and national interest”, said Thuglak Editor S Gurumurthy on Tuesday.

Addressing a seminar organised by Press Council of India (PCI) to celebrate the National Press Day, Gurumurthy traced the changes media has undergone from the pre-Independence era to the present day.

The Press Council of India (PCI) on Tuesday celebrated the National Press Day, with eminent personalities recalling the media’s contribution and evolution in the country.

The PCI organised a seminar on the topic, ‘Who is not afraid of media?’, to mark the occasion.

Gurumurthy felt that social media poses a risk to “everybody’s image, national security and national interest”.

Some of the participants in the seminar, however, differed from Gurumurthy’s suggestion, saying while measures need to be taken to check the circulation of unverified information, a complete ban on social media would not be an appropriate step to check the spread of misinformation.

Underlining the positive aspects of social media, one of the participants said it has offered individuals a platform to freely express their views on any topic.

Gurumurty was invited as a guest of honour at the event hosted by the media watchdog which is headed by Justice (retd) Chandramauli Kumar Prasad.

  • Video claiming Punjab regiment jawans protesting with farmers is fake: Indian Army

    By ANI

NEW DELHI: The Indian Army on Sunday clarified that the video circulating on social media showing army personnel standing with civilians under a tent saying that Punjab regiment soldiers are protesting with farmers was fake.

The Army officials further clarified that the ex-servicemen of the unit had arranged tea for the serving personnel while they were moving from one location to another.

“A video is circulating on social media showing Indian Army jawans standing with civilians under a tent saying that Punjab regiment soldiers are protesting with some farmers. This is fake news,” an army official said.

“Ex-servicemen of the unit had arranged tea for the serving personnel while they were moving from one location to another,” he added.

Farmers have been protesting at different sites since November 26 last year against the enacted farm laws: Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

Farmer leaders and the Centre have held several rounds of talks but the impasse remains.

  • Congress ground work to take on BJP virtually

    Express News Service

NEW DELHI: Citizen reporter, fake news alert desk, state-wise dedicated control room and amplifying local issues nationally — the Congress social media department is gearing up ahead of assembly elections next year to take on the BJP virtually in the war of perception building.

It is looking to rope in common people to narrate the hardships they have faced due to the policies of central and respective state governments. “We launched a Covid Nyay Yatra in Gujarat where we shot 400 videos of family members of people who died due to Covid-19.

The state government has been hiding the exact number of people who died during the pandemic. This is an initiative to give voice to family members who lost their loved ones. These videos are amplified to present the real picture,” said Congress social media incharge Rohan Gupta.

Following discussion with state units, the party plans to train a dedicated team of volunteers who will hit the ground to connect with people and bring in their stories through videos. “The need was felt as the issues concerning people are not properly raised in the media. We thought to directly involve those affected as ‘Janta Ka Reporter’. We are looking to pick specific issues and amplify it based on facts and figures,” he added.

Plans are also afoot to set up a national fake news alert desk that will do fact-checking and amplify it with data and facts.  For the polls, dedicated control rooms have been set up  and workers are being mapped booth wise and connected through social media platforms  for circulation of issues and collecting feedbacks.

  • Calcutta University professor booked for allegedly threatening to kill CM Mamata Banerjee

    By PTI

KOLKATA: Case was lodged against a professor of the Calcutta University for allegedly threatening on social media to kill Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, police said on Saturday.

The case was registered against Arindam Bhattacharya, a professor of the Zoology Department, by the Hare Street police station on the basis of a complaint filed by PhD scholar Tamal Dutta, a senior police officer said.

Bhattacharya was booked under IPC sections 505 (1B) (with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public), 506 (threat be to cause death or grievous hurt) and 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy), said Murlidhar Sharma, the joint commissioner of police (crime).

The professor is yet to be taken into custody, police said.

When contacted, Bhattacharya told PTI, “I didn’t make any comments against the chief minister. The complainant is a Trinamool Congress supporter. I am waiting for the police to take steps and only after that I will seek legal advice on this.”

During a conversation on Facebook Messenger, a friend told the professor, “Before the elections you had written in a WhatApp group that you wanted to kill the chief minister. That time you went to the TMC leader’s house to save yourself…” In reply, he wrote in Bengali, “Akhono hatya korte chai…Pa chata kutta ami noi… Ami oshikkhito birodhi (I still want to kill..I am not a footlicking dog. I am against those who are illiterate).”

Battacharya said it was a personal conversation between him and a friend which was made public on social media.

“This conversation happened sometime back. I have not threatened the chief minister or anyone and it is clear in the message,” he said.

Bhattacharya, a professor of Zoology for 17 years, said the police complaint was lodged against him as part of a conspiracy so that he loses his job.

“I am scared and tormented. I feel helpless and insulted. Never dreamt of facing such humiliation in my life. I can sense that this is a conspiracy against me so that I eventually lose my job,” he said.

Bhattacharya was served a notice to appear before the investigating officer on Saturday afternoon.

“I have nothing to do. Let the police arrest me. Let there be another Ambikesh Mahapatra,” he said.

In April 2012, Chemistry professor Ambikesh Mahapatra of Jadavpur University was arrested for allegedly forwarding a cartoon, lampooning the chief minister.

The TMC-backed West Bengal College and University Professors Association condemned Bhattacharya’s comments. Dutta, who lodged the police complaint, told PTI that a professor cannot make such remarks.

“I went through the comments and found them to be quite dangerous. A professor cannot make such comments. That is why I approached the police and after consulting them, I lodged a complaint with the Cyber Cell,” he said.
