  • Majority of Indian parents say their kids addicted to social media, OTT: Survey

    By PTI

NEW DELHIl: A majority of urban Indian parents surveyed have said their children are addicted to social media, OTT and online gaming platforms while one-third of respondents admitted that addiction is making kids aggressive, according to a survey by LocalCircles.

It further revealed that 73 per cent of urban Indian parents surveyed want the data protection law to ensure mandatory parental consent is sought for children under 18, when they join social media, OTT/video and online gaming platforms.

The survey received over 46,000 responses from urban Indian parents located in 296 districts.

About 62 per cent of respondents were men while 38 per cent of respondents were women.

Nearly 47 per cent of respondents were from tier 1, 35 per cent from tier 2, and 18 per cent respondents were from tier 3 and 4 districts.

“Gadget addiction by children between ages 9-18 has become the new reality. The addiction, in some children, is leading to impatience and aggression, lack of concentration, memory issues, headache, eye and back problems, stress, anxiety, communication issues, lethargy and even depression,” according to the survey.

What is even more alarming is that in many cases, the parents surveyed by LocalCircles reported not even knowing the various social media, video and online gaming apps their children are using.

Given the amount of inputs and concerns received on LocalCircles on the issue from parents and grandparents across India, LocalCircles conducted a national survey to understand the key issues they are facing with their children spending excessive time on social media, OTT and online gaming platforms as well as understand what they feel about parental consent for accessing such platforms.

According to the survey, 61 per cent of urban Indian parents of children between ages 9-17 conceded that their children spend an average of three hours or more each day on social media, videos/OTT and online games.

“37 per cent of parents surveyed shared their children spent the most time watching videos/OTT; 35 per cent indicated that their children spent the most time on social media and 33 per cent indicated that their children are into online gaming,” it said.

Nearly 73 per cent of respondents stress parental consent for children under 18 years should be “absolutely” necessary for signing up on social media, OTT and online gaming platforms.

The survey brings to the fore that young children between 9-17 years are increasingly becoming hooked to social media, online gaming and video/OTT platforms.

“What this means is that platforms will be required to deploy more checks and balances to know when a child is creating an account and ensuring that the right processes are deployed so the child’s parents give their consent,” it said.

LocalCircles said it will share the findings of this survey with key stakeholders, including various ministries.

  • Sacked teacher of Unacademy says his remark misinterpreted, alleges firm acted under social media pressure

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Unacademy sacked teacher Karan Sangwan on Saturday alleged that the firm terminated his service under pressure from trollers on social media who misinterpreted his generic remark to vote for educated candidates.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Sangwan said he made the generic remark on his YouTube channel and not during his lecture at Unacademy.

“Why did termination happen? There is a pressure which gets built and you burst under its load. You (Unacademy) could not deal with the pressure. Therefore, under pressure you had to take an action which you may have not desired to or you desired to…I don’t know. I can’t say anything about what your intentions were” Sangwan said.

Sangwan said that Unacademy acted against him without hearing him out.

“You directly sent me a termination notice,” Sangwan said, adding that to hide the pressure, Unacademy used the term “code of conduct” without defining a political statement.

He said that Unacademy cited views expressed by an account on platform X as an example in the termination notice.

“Someone else’s views were imposed on me,” Sangwan said.

Sangwan said that he was hurled abuses, called anti-national and death threats were issued to him by trollers “who appeared to be illiterate” after his video was spread on August 13.

Unacademy co-founder Roman Saini said that Sangwan was in breach of contract and therefore the company had to part ways with him.

Saini in a tweet on the matter said Unacademy is an education platform that is deeply committed to imparting quality education.

“To do this we have in place a strict Code of Conduct for all our educators with the intention of ensuring that our learners have access to unbiased knowledge. Our learners are at the centre of everything we do. The classroom is not a place to share personal opinions and views as they can wrongly influence them. In the current situation, we were forced to part ways with Karan Sangwan as he was in breach of the Code of Conduct,” Saini had said on August 17.

Sangwan said the situation changed in his favour after he shared information about his termination on August 17 in a messaging group that was leaked on social media and this time lakhs of people supported him.

Several politicians questioned the action of Unacademy and if his appeal to vote for an educated candidate was wrong.

Sangwan said that he made a generic statement without naming anyone on his YouTube channel which was not mentioned by Unacademy.

He said that people supported him after information about his termination went out but still no one from Unacademy contacted him.

“I made a statement. You are taking it on yourself when I have not taken any name. Why are you taking it on yourself? I have not said it,” he said.

He also criticised the conduct of a news channel, without naming the entity, that his interview was edited to further fan the controversy.

  • NCPCR to brainstorm to prevent cyber trafficking

    Express News Service

NEW DELHI:  A minor girl from West Bengal, whose Instagram reels received many impressions on social media, one day got an ‘offer’ to act in a Hindi film. She readily accepted the offer, but soon found to her shock that the proposal was bait to lure her into prostitution. It was a narrow escape for her. But many such girls fall prey to miscreants on social media looking for vulnerable profiles.

The rising number of such cases has caught the attention of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). The child rights body will be holding a meeting of all stakeholders on August 21 to deal with the problem of social media becoming a ‘tool for trafficking.’ The meeting aims to examine the existing mechanism and develop preventive measures to ensure the safety of children in the cyber world.

In a letter to all the stakeholders, including the IT and telecom ministry, NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo said, “The commission has received information regarding several alarming incidents where minor children have been lured and further been made victim to offences like online grooming for various unlawful activities, trafficking, online sexual abuse and online harassment by people who they meet on social media websites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.”

He further said the commission had received complaints and reports on the availability of child sexual abuse material on various social media platforms and web pages. Speaking to this paper, Kanoongo said that in the last two years, they have encountered several cases where minor girls have been lured through social media, especially Instagram.

“It is important to note that these incidents are now on the rise due to the easy access of the unmonitored or unsupervised Internet and social media platforms,” Kanoongo said. “In the West Bengal incident, the girl was lucky that the accused was nabbed in time. In another incident, we found a body of a minor girl similarly lured through social media. Several such instances have come to light. Social media has now become the tool for traffickers,” he added.

Kanoongo said young children posting videos and reels online are unaware that they are easy prey for online stalking and online grooming for unlawful activities. “We want cyberspace to be a safe space for minors. It is thus necessary to examine and develop a framework and mechanism to safeguard them,” he added.

In his letter, the NCPCR head has said that the commission “deems it appropriate for a deliberation to examine and review framework/mechanism under various laws, based on the inputs from all the stakeholders, and recommend measures for their effective implementation.” “Such framework will not only cater to the challenges faced by the authorities but also lay down preventive measures to safeguard children,” the letter said. Major Internet Service Providers have also been invited to attend the meeting.

  • One cannot malign judicial officers by using social media, says Supreme Court

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: One cannot malign judicial officers by using social media, the Supreme Court observed on Tuesday while dismissing a plea challenging a Madhya Pradesh High Court order that sentenced a man to 10 days in jail for making corruption allegations against a district judge.

A vacation bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra said it was not inclined to interfere in the matter.

“Just because you don’t get a favourable order doesn’t mean that you will malign the judicial officer. Independence of (the) judiciary doesn’t just mean independence from (the) executive but also from outside forces. This has to be a lesson for others also. He should have thought twice before casting any aspersion on the judicial officer. He maligned the judicial officer. Think of the damage done to the judicial officer’s image,” Justice Trivedi observed orally.

The counsel appearing for the petitioner sought leniency from the Supreme Court and said the imprisonment order was excessive. The lawyer said this is a matter pertaining to personal liberty and the applicant has already been in jail since May 27.

The top court bench then remarked, “We’re here to decide on law, not show mercy. Especially to such persons.”

The apex court was hearing a plea filed by Krishna Kumar Raghuvanshi, challenging the high court judgment in a suo motu criminal contempt case initiated against him for making allegations of corruption against a district judge.

The proceedings were initiated against Raghuvanshi in response to a reference made by Additional District Judge SPS Bandela under Section 15(2) of the Contempt of Courts Act.

The reference was based on Raghuvanshi’s defiance of the court’s orders in a temple-related dispute and his circulation of a letter maligning the court’s image, reputation and prestige through WhatsApp.

  • Social media post on Prophet flares tempers in UP’s Tilhar

    By PTI

SHAHJAHANPUR: Security was stepped up in the Tilhar area of the district here after a large number of people gathered outside a police station demanding the arrest of a youth accused of sharing a social media post on Prophet Mohammad, police said on Wednesday.

The accused has since been arrested and police have been deployed at his house to prevent any flare-ups.

Police were deployed at all intersections of the Tilhar town as a precautionary measure, they said.

Superintendent of Police S Anand told PTI that one Varun Dhawan, a resident of Dabhaura village under Tilhar Police Station, had on Tuesday shared a post related to the Prophet on his social media account.

He had picked the post from another social media handle, the SP said.

The accused later deleted the post, which was in Urdu, and also released a video saying he had shared the post by mistake, the officer said.

The accused also said in the video that his intention was never to hurt the sentiments of any religion, but by then the post had gone viral, he added.

Later on Tuesday evening, hundreds of people reached the Tilhar Police Station creating a ruckus and demanding that Dhawan be arrested immediately, the SP said.

Circle Officer (CO) Tilhar Priyank Jain said as soon as he received information about the matter, he went to the spot and tried to pacify the people but the size of the crowd kept growing.

Police then called for more forces at the station and a team was sent to arrest the accused.

Dhawan was taken into custody and sent to another police station in the district, the CO said.

Jain said the protestors continued to agitate despite the arrest and dispersed only when newly elected municipal chairman Hajra Begum’s husband appealed to them to return to their homes, the CO said.

However, some protestors headed towards Dhawan’s village, forcing police to deploy forces outside his house, he said.

Police continue to patrol Dabhaura and are keeping a watch at his house, where his sister’s wedding is also scheduled to take place.

“Now the situation is normal,” Jain said.

Dhawan has been arrested allegedly for “hurting religious sentiments” and he will be sent to jail today, the CO added.

  • Gujarat battle on social media: Congress focuses more onYatra; AAP leads with max posts on Sunday

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: With less than one week left for the high octane poll battle in Gujarat to end, the ruling BJP and new player AAP have intensified their online campaigning to reach out to the voters active on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

At the same time, the Congress’ main social media handles have focused more on promoting Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ than the party’s campaigning for the two-phase assembly elections on December 1 and 5.

The counting of votes will be taken up on December 8.

An analysis of Facebook accounts and Twitter handles last week (Nov 21-27) of the three parties showed that Congress’ handles were more attentive to Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, as 75 per cent of the total posts were on the yatra.

Less than 20 per cent of the posts on its Facebook page and the Twitter handle were on the party’s campaigning in Gujarat elections.

On the other hand, about 40 per cent of the posts from the Bhartiya Janata Party’s main Facebook page and Twitter handle were related to Gujarat polls during the same duration.

The flow of assembly election-related posts was almost the same during the last week, except on Friday when the count of the social posts on the Gujarat polls was the lowest for the BJP and the other two parties.
