  • Singer Sia reveals autism spectrum diagnosis two years after ‘Music’ film backlash

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: Two years after her film “Music” courted controversy for misrepresenting people with autism, singer-songwriter Sia has revealed that she is “on the spectrum” and in “recovery mode”.

The Australian musician was called out for casting a neurotypical actor — her frequent collaborator Maddie Ziegler — as a nonverbal autistic teenage girl in her feature directorial debut “Music” in 2021.

During a recent episode of Rob Has a Podcast, Sia said she has been able to become herself only in the last two years.

“I’m on the spectrum and I’m in recovery and whatever. For 45 years, I was like, ‘I’ve got to go put my human suit on’. And only in the last two years have I become fully, fully myself,” the “Chandelier” hitmaker said.

She also said no one can “love you when you’re filled with secrets and living in shame.”

“And then we finally sit in a room full of strangers and tell them our deepest, darkest, most shameful secrets, and everybody laughs along with us, and we don’t feel like pieces of trash for the first time in our lives, and we feel seen for the first time in our lives for who we actually are, and then we can start going out into the world and just operating as humans and human beings with hearts and not pretending to be anything,” she added.

“Music” followed a newly sober woman named Zu, played by Kate Hudson, who becomes the guardian of her half-sister Music (Ziegler), a teenage girl on the autism spectrum.

At the time of the controversy, Sia had hit back at critics, saying the story was inspired by her “neuro-atypical friend” who “found it too stressful being non-verbal, and I made this movie with nothing but love for him and his mother”.

She later offered an apology, adding the scenes in question in “Music” would be removed from future screenings.

JAMMU: A former Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) terrorist was arrested by the State Investigation Agency (SIA) on Tuesday for remaining in touch with Kashmir-based militants and carrying out many terror activities in Doda, officials said.

“SIA team that was deputed to Doda arrested ex-HM terrorist Abdul Rashid code Arsalan from Tantna-Ghat area,” an SIA officer told PTI.

The former terrorist was involved in a case of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in Jammu in 2010, he said.

The SIA team was directed to identify the terrorist involved in the FIR and after strenuous efforts, the team arrested him, the officials said.

As the ex-terrorist was active during 2009-2010 and was in constant touch with Kashmir-based Hizbul terrorists and carried out many terrorist activities in Doda valley, which will be further unfolded during the investigation of the said case, they said.

  • SIA to issue letters rogatory to request Pakistan court for info on activities of three Hizbul terrorists

    By PTI

JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir State Investigation Agency will use the “tool of letter rogatory” and request a court in Pakistan for information about three Hizb-ul-Mujahideen terrorists, two of whom are hiding in that country, and coordinating secessionist activities in the union territory, officials said.

The probe agency on Monday filed a charge sheet in a NIA special court against Asif Shabir Naik, a resident of Kashtigarh in Doda, his father Shabir Hussain Naik alias Khalid Shabir, currently operating from Pakistan and Safdar Hussain alias Ehsan of Marmat in Doda, who is also based in Pakistan, they said.

While Asif Naik is in judicial custody, his father and his associate Safdar Hussain are hiding in Pakistan and have been designated absconders, an SIA spokesman said.

The officials said that as Asif Naik’s stay in Pakistan was for almost three years, the major part of the investigation pertains to the territory of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

During his visits, Asif Naik had stayed along with Shabir Naik and Safdar Hussain in Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) camps, they said.

“Even when common place knowledge suggests that Pakistan authorities would not co-operate in assisting this legally mandated investigation, it was thought prudent and legally warranted to use the tool of letter rogatory and request the Pakistani court of law through the laid down channel seeking information about activities of Asif while in Pakistan”, the spokesman said.

Similar, letters of rogatory related request have been initiated pertaining to Shabir Naik, a HM media advisor, and Safdar Hussain, who are hiding in Pakistan, he said, adding that the endeavours are being made to get some more evidence.

According to the charge sheet, Asif Naik was intercepted at the Srinagar airport while he was trying to go back to Pakistan.

There were intelligence inputs that he had been visiting Pakistan posing as a student studying there, the officials said.

He was actually visiting terrorist and separatist training facilities there, suggested the intelligence inputs, the spokesman said.

The investigation revealed brazen and egregious misuse of travel documents by Pakistani agencies, the charge sheet said.

In this case, the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen with the “blessings” of Pakistani agencies gave the cover of studentship to Asif Naik.

He used his stay in Pakistan to meet his father and also undergo training in sabotage and subversion, it said.

“Asif Naik’s interrogation in the context of the digital evidence revealed that Pakistan had arranged his admission at the International Islamic University in Islamabad in a mass communication programme as cover, and simultaneously facilitated his internship in the media cell of the HM run by his father,” the spokesman said.

The investigation revealed that Asif Naik had completely concealed that his father was in Pakistan, a senior figure in the HM and close to Syed Sallauddin, he said.

He had falsely mentioned that he was visiting Pakistan to meet a relative, the charge sheet said.

It said it is suspected that the objective of Asif Naik’s admission, as a student in a mass media course in Pakistan, was that he would to return to India as a journalist, clandestinely get embedded in the system and receive instructions on planning, coordinating and executing not only propaganda operations but separatist and even violent terrorist actions.

But for the videos in his cell phone the latter part of the adversary agenda would not have surfaced, the spokesman added.

JAMMU: The State Investigation Agency on Monday filed a charge sheet against three Hizb-ul-Mujahideen terrorists, including two operating from Pakistan, for coordinating terrorist and secessionist activities in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

The charge sheet has been filed in a case registered on November 7 last year and investigation was conducted over the last about six months, they said.

This assumes importance in the context of the government’s strategy to identify Jammu and Kashmir residents who are hiding in Pakistan and coordinating terrorist and secessionist activities behind the scene from across the border, the officials said.

The SIA conducted investigations have resulted in unearthing of a story of a father, who crossed into Pakistan illegally, and climbed the ladder of seniority in the Syed Sallauddin-led HM.

He then became the media advisor looking after the propaganda cell of the terror outfit, the officials said.

The investigation revealed brazen and egregious misuse of travel documents by Pakistani agencies, the charge sheet said.

In this case, the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen with “blessings” of Pakistani agencies gave the cover of studentship to Asif Naik.

He used his stay in Pakistan to meet his father and also undergo training in sabotage and subversion, it said.

The SIA, which went into all aspect of the cross-border terror network of recruitment’s, said that the forensics of the Asif Naik’s phone devices showed that he had videographed army installations along the Baramula-Srinagar road.

He had also photographed the access road to the airport and security features adjacent to it.

The charge sheet said that while the visa on Asif Naik’s passport showed that he is a visitor, but immigration records indicated he was a student.

“Asif Naik’s interrogation in the context of digital evidence revealed that Pakistan had arranged his admission at the International Islamic University in Islamabad in a mass communication programme as cover and simultaneously facilitated his internship in the media cell of the HM run by his father”, the spokesman said.

  • Sia deletes Twitter amid controversy over her new film ‘Music’

    By ANI
WASHINGTON: Singer and director Sia has seemingly deleted her Twitter handle amid criticism over her new film ‘Music’.

As per E! News, ‘Music’, which received two Golden Globe nominations on Wednesday, has been facing backlash for its casting of American actor-dancer Maddie Ziegler as a teenager on the autism spectrum.

The film, which also stars Leslie Odom Jr., came under fire especially after Sia claimed, on Twitter, that she could not find an actor with autism who could play Maddie’s character named Music.

The movie also received intense criticism after it was revealed that a scene in the film depicts Maddie’s character being restrained during an episode, something that people in the autism community pointed out can be dangerous for both the person being restrained and the one doing the restraining.

Sia has pushed back the criticism surrounding the casting of Maddie, who she has worked with a number of times in her music videos. However, on Thursday, Sia took to social media to claim she was “listening” now to those who took issue with that controversial scene.

Sia apologised and explained that she will be editing the movie’s content and adding a statement to the beginning of the film. “I’m sorry,” she tweeted.

The ‘Elastic Heart’ singer added, “I promise, have been listening. The motion picture MUSIC will, moving forward, have this warning at the head of the movie: MUSIC in no way condones or recommends the use of restraint on autistic people. There are autistic occupational therapists that specialize in sensory processing who can be consulted to explain safe ways to provide proprioceptive, deep-pressure feedback to help w meltdown safety.”

“I plan to remove the restrained scenes from all future printings. I listened to the wrong people and that is my responsibility, my research was clearly not thorough enough, not wide enough,” she continued.

However, shortly after tweeting about the added disclaimer in the film, Sia’s Twitter handle was deactivated. Despite seemingly deleting her Twitter, Sia’s Instagram is still active.

On Wednesday, she shared a poster from ‘Music’ in honour of the Golden Globe nomination, writing in the caption, “This movie is a love letter to everyone who has ever felt they didn’t have a voice. What an incredible, exciting and unbelievable experience. Congratulations to all the cast and crew, and thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press. What an honor!”

‘Music’ is slated to hit the big screens on February 12, this year. The musical film stars Hudson as Zu, a recently sober drug dealer who suddenly becomes the guardian of her younger sister named Music (Maddie), a special-needs teen who communicates through a device that speaks for her, and who always listens to music via large headphones.
