  • Government plans to divest its stakes from three Defence PSUs

    NEW DELHI: The government is planning to decrease its shareholding in three Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) in the future but timeline for execution of this step is not decided yet.

    Shripad Naik, Minister of State (MoS) for Defence on Monday informed, “The Government is planning to decrease shareholding in Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) namely, Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML Ltd)., Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI).”

    As for timeline, Naik said, “The completion of a transaction depends on market conditions.  Therefore, it is not possible to predict a timeline.”

    Minister shared this information in the Rajya Sabha in reply to a question asked by Dr Santanu Sen a Rajya Sabha member from West Bengal.

    BEML Ltd is a new addition to the list of DPSUs from which the government is planning to decrease its stakes as GRSE and MIDHANI were part of a prior such step as per which the government has already decreased its shareholding and a total of Rs 26,457.99 crore collected by decrease in shareholding from six PSUs, in last five years, making defence-related equipment.

    Quoting accountability and public ownership as some of the reasons for divestment of stake MoS Defence elaborated, “Policy of disinvestment of minority stake without transfer of management control is being followed for priority sector including defence to unlock value, promote public ownership, to meet the minimum public shareholding norms of SEBI and for ensuring higher degree of accountability.” 

  • Government planning to set up new Sainik Schools in partnership with NGOs, private schools

    NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday said it is planning to bring a new scheme for setting up new Sainik Schools across the country in partnership with NGOs, private schools and state governments.

    Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik also said in Lok Sabha that the government has decided to admit girl cadets in all Sainik Schools from the academic session 2021-22.

    At present 33 Sainik schools are operating in the country.

    “After the success of pilot project for admission of girl cadets in Sainik School Chhingchhip, Mizoram in the academic session 2018-19, the government has decided to admit girl cadets along with boys in all Sainik Schools from the academic session 2021-22,” Naik said.

    He said the proposal to set up new Sainik Schools in partnership with NGOs, private schools and state governments is aimed at providing schooling opportunities in “CBSE Plus” type of educational environment.

    “The endeavour is to provide schooling opportunities in ‘CBSE Plus’ type of educational environment by involving desirous government/private schools/NGOs to partner in establishing/aligning their system with Sainik Schools ethos, value system and national pride,” Naik said in written reply to a question.

    He said the schools are proposed to be affiliated to the Sainik Schools Society.

    Sainik Schools are run by the Sainik Schools Society which is under administrative control of the Ministry of Defence.

    The aim of establishing the Sainik Schools was to prepare the students from an early age for their entry into the Indian armed forces.

    Sainik Schools are established on receipt of specific requests from state governments.

    Earlier, only boy cadets were allowed to enrol in Sainik Schools.

    To a separate question, Naik said no formation or unit has been withdrawn from North-Eastern states during 2020-21.

    “In view of the security situation in the North-East region, re-alignment of operational role of some Army units has been carried out,” he said.

  • Almost recovered, will attend Parliament by March: Union Minister Shripad Naik

    PANAJI: Union AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik on Sunday said he was “confident” he would attend the next session of Parliament starting in March as he had “almost recovered” from the injuries he received in a vehicle accident last month.

    In the accident, which took place in neighbouring Karnakata on January 12, Naik’s wife and close aide were killed.

    “I am confident I would be able to attend the next session of Parliament starting in March,” Naik, Lok Sabha member from North Goa, told PTI from hospital.

    “I have almost recovered. Only 25 per cent of recovery is left. I should be discharged within the next eight days. It was a miraculous recovery due to the blessings of God and efforts of the doctors at Goa Medical College and Hospital,” Naik said.

    Naik said he was clearing work-related files from his hospital bed and sending reports required during the ongoing session of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

    He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reduced his workload post the accident.

    PANAJI: A week after he met with a tragic accident, Union AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik said he would be discharged from Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) near here in four to five days.

    Naik (68), the Union Minister of State for Defence and AYUSH, was admitted to the GMCH on January 12 after he met with an accident while on his way back to Goa from neighbouring Karnataka.

    Speaking to PTI, Naik said with everyone’s blessings and by God’s grace, he has recovered from the tragic accident.

    “I am seeing this day after a long time. I appeal to people not to crowd at the hospital to meet me. I will be discharged in four to five days and after that, I will meet everyone,” he said.

    Naik urged his well-wishers to pray for his recovery from wherever they are without visiting the hospital.

    The Union Minister, who has been recovering well at the GMCH, greeted the hospital staff and doctors, as he was brought out of his ward on a wheelchair on Tuesday.

    Naik’s wife and his close aide had succumbed to the injuries in the accident, while he was admitted to the GMCH in a critical condition.

    PANAJI: Union Minister Shripad Naik, who is currently under treatment at Goa Medical college after meeting with an accident, has been taken off from ventilator support and shifted to high flow nasal oxygen, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant informed on Wednesday.

    A three-member team of AIIMS, Delhi, GMC doctors and Sawant this morning re-assessed Naik’s health condition. Sawant said the health of the North Goa MP has improved significantly and he will be minutely monitored by GMC doctors during the next 24 hours.

    “We are very satisfied with his (Naik’s) breathing, blood pressure, and other health parameters. We have seen him and advised him how to take him off the ventilator tomorrow,” Dr Rajeshwari, head of the AIIMS team said after evaluating Naik’s health.

    The AIIMS team also comprised Dr SB Gaikwad, HOD, Neuro-Radiology and Dr Dalim Kr Baidya, Additional Professor of Anesthesiology.

    Naik, Union Minister of State for Defence met with an accident near a village in Ankola Taluk of Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka on Monday. Naik along with his wife and personal assistant were on their way to Gokarna from Yellapur. His wife Vijaya Naik and the personal assistant died in the accident.

  • AIIMS panel advises taking Union minister Shripad Naik off ventilator

    PANAJI: An AIIMS team which reviewed the health condition of Union minister Shripad Naik, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Goa following an accident, has advised to take him off the ventilator on Wednesday, an official from the team said.

    Taking to reporters late Tuesday night, the official also said they are satisfied with Naik’s breathing, blood pressure and other health parameters.

    The team from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, arrived in Goa on Tuesday evening and visited Naik at the government-run Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) located in Porvorim.

    They later held discussions with doctors of the GMCH over the line of treatment for the 68-year-old Union Minister of State for Defence and AYUSH, a senior official from the Goa-based hospital said.

    State Chief Minister Pramod Sawant was also present along with the team at the GMCH.

    Talking to reporters late Tuesday night at the GMCH, one of the members from the AIIMS team said, “We are satisfied with his breathing, blood pressure and other health parameters.

    We have seen him and given advice to take him off the ventilator tomorrow (Wednesday).

    ” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday visited Naik at the GMCH and later said his condition is stable and he is out of danger.

    Naik received injuries, while his wife Vijaya and an aide died on Monday when their car met with the accident near Ankola in Uttar Kannada district, while he was returning to home state Goa from Dharmasthala in neighbouring Karnataka.

    Naik was admitted to the GMCH late Monday night.

    GMCH Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar on Tuesday said when Naik was brought to the GMCH, he was critical but later he responded to treatment and is gaining consciousness.

    Four major surgeries were performed on him, he said.

    Bandekar said Naik will continue to be in the hospital for another 10 to 15 days after which it will take at least three to four months for him to recuperate completely.

  • Rajnath Singh visits Union minister Shripad Naik in Goa hospital

    PANAJI: If required Union minister Shripad Naik, admitted to a hospital in Goa after he met with an accident, will be shifted to New Delhi for further treatment, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday.

    A team of New Delhi’s All India institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will coordinate with doctors of the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) who are treating the 68- year-old BJP leader, he said.

    Singh said the condition of Naik is stable and he is out of danger.

    Naik received injuries, while his wife Vijaya and an aide died on Monday when their car met with the accident near Ankola in Uttar Kannada district, while he was returning to home state Goa from Dharmasthala in neighbouring Karnataka.

    Singh flew down to Goa and visited Naik, who was admitted to the state government-run GMCH near here on late Monday night.

    Upon his arrival, Singh held a meeting with senior doctors of the GMCH, including its Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar, over the condition of the Union Minister of State for Defence and AYUSH who underwent multiple surgeries at the hospital.

    Talking to reporters, Singh said he has spoken to AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria, who has agreed to coordinate with the team of GMCH doctors treating Naik.

    The condition of Naik is stable and he is out of danger.

    Teams of doctors from the AIIMS and the GMCH will supervise his treatment, and if required, he would be flown to New Delhi for further treatment, Singh said.

    We may not require to shift him to Delhi,” he said.

    Dr Bandekar said as of now there was no need to shift Naik out of the GMCH.

    When he was brought to the GMCH, he was critical but later he responded to treatment and is gaining consciousness.

  • Union minister Shripad Naik injured, wife killed in car accident in Karnataka

    PANAJI: Union minister Shripad Naik was injured, while his wife and an aide died in a road accident in adjoining Karnataka on Monday, an official said.

    Naik’s wife Vijaya and the aide were travelling with the minister when their car met with an accident near Ankola in Uttar Kannada district, while he was returning to his home state Goa from Dharmasthala in Karnataka.

    Naik (68) was brought to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) near Panaji around 11.10 pm in a critical condition, sources said.

    In Bengaluru, the Karnataka police said Naik, along with his wife, personal assistant Deepak, his close confidante Sai Kiran, gunman and the driver were heading from Yallapur to Gokarna on Monday night.

    On the way, the driver lost his control over the car near Hosakambi village in Ankola Taluk of Uttara Kannada and the vehicle overturned, they said.

    “It was not a collision between vehicles.Prima facie it appears to be the case of the driver losing control of the car,” a police officer told PTI in Bengaluru.

    Naiks wife was brought dead to the hospital in Karnataka, while his personal assistant succumbed to injuries at the medical facility, the sources in Panaji said.

    The sources said the Union Minister of State for AYUSH’s car skidded and rammed into a roadside tree.

    All the occupants, including the driver, were taken out of the wreckage of the car, which was badly damaged.

    Visuals from the site showed Naik being shifted in an ambulance in an unconscious state.

    As the ambulance entered Goa, the state police escorted it to the GMCH.

    Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant arrived at the GMCH before the ambulance reached the government-run hospital where medical specialists were ready to treat Naik, who is also the junior defence minister.

    After holding preliminary discussions with doctors, including Dean of GMCH Dr Shivanand Bandekar, Sawant took the physicians in his car to the ambulance, which was on the way to the hospital, for providing immediate attention to Naik.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Sawant and asked him to ensure proper medical treatment for the minister, the sources said.

    Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also spoke to Sawant about speedy medical treatment to the BJP MP from North Goa.

    Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa condoled the demise of Naik’s wife and conveyed his wishes for Naik’s speedy recovery.

    In Panaji, Goa BJP President Sadanand Tanavade, General Secretary Satish Dhond and other party office-bearers gathered at the GMCH to enquire about Naik’s condition.
