Celebrating its ninth anniversary on September 16th, the Hindi film ‘Pink’ stands as a landmark achievement in contemporary cinema. Its central message, encapsulated in the phrase ‘No Means No,’ continues to resonate deeply, prompting critical discussions on consent and gender equality. The film’s gripping narrative plunges viewers into the lives of its characters, leaving a lasting emotional impact. The story follows three Delhi-based women, Meenal (Taapsee Pannu), Falak (Kirti Kulhari), and Andrea (Andrea Tariang), who face adversity after a night out. The film intricately explores the societal pressures and prejudices faced by women, challenging ingrained notions about their behavior and autonomy. ‘Pink’ skillfully addresses gender issues, dismantling patriarchal norms with sharp precision. The courtroom sequences serve as a focal point, with the lawyer, Deepak Sahgal (Amitabh Bachchan), challenging societal norms regarding a woman’s right to say no. The film’s core message is unambiguous: a woman’s denial of sexual advances must be respected. The film rejects simplistic portrayals, delving beyond black and white to expose complexities of gender discrimination. It resists the urge to portray victims as purely virtuous or aggressors as purely evil. The protagonists are presented with their flaws and vulnerabilities, forcing the audience to confront uncomfortable truths. The film challenges pre-conceived notions about permissible boundaries for feminine behavior, urging a re-evaluation of societal norms. The film’s impact lies in its ability to spark conversations about gender dynamics. The first half establishes an atmosphere of tension. The dialogues question patriarchal values. The performances are compelling and authentic. The film’s impact is amplified through its portrayal of the challenges faced by women in society. The director, Aniruddha Roy Choudhuri, opted for a realistic depiction of events. The film ends with the message that a woman’s autonomy over her body should be respected. This film remains a relevant piece of cinema, with its power to spark necessary dialogues.

I’m thrilled and proud of my first film, ‘Yahaan’. This movie has a special place in my heart, and I cherish every moment spent working on it. The visual element of ‘Yahaan’ is truly breathtaking, thanks to the incredible work of my cinematographer Jakob Ihre. He presented Kashmir in an authentic and realistic way, making it look like a poetic paradise. I believe he brought out the lyrical quality of the visuals, which makes the movie even more enchanting.

Working with Gulzar Saab and Shantanu Moitra was a dream come true. They created some of the most evocative music and lyrics, which added depth to the film. I was fortunate to have them on board, especially Gulzar Saab, who is a legend in the industry.

The plot of ‘Yahaan’ is thought-provoking, with a Kashmiri girl questioning the status quo and her brother entangled in the process. The love story between the Kashmiri girl and an army personnel adds a layer of complexity to the narrative. I wanted to showcase the broken Kashmir of that time, the Kashmiriyat, and the locals who were against the events that unfolded in 1989. The film aims to be hopeful, bringing together an army guy, a Kashmiri girl, and a Hindu girl who’s been adopted by a family.

Shoojit Sircar’s debut film, *Yahaan*, offers a compelling exploration of love amidst the turmoil of Kashmir. Cinematographer Jakob Ihre’s use of blue-tinged lenses beautifully captures the valley’s duality of beauty and hardship. The film distinguishes itself from previous cinematic attempts to portray romance in the context of Kashmiri militancy, such as *Mission Kashmir* and *Sheen*. *Yahaan* intricately weaves a romance between an army officer, Captain Aman, and a Kashmiri girl, Adaa, played by Jimmy Shergill and Minissha Lamba respectively, punctuated by moments of both humor and stark realism. The narrative delicately balances the development of a lasting relationship within a setting defined by conflict. The second half intensifies as Aman is accused of collaborating with a terrorist, leading to an engaging finale, including a climax inspired by the Hazrat Bal mosque siege. Despite occasional narrative simplicity, Sircar’s focus on the characters’ individual experiences fosters empathy, softening the impact of predictable plot points. The film also takes a sympathetic view of the press and the militants. Ultimately, *Yahaan* isn’t a perfect romantic portrayal, but its aesthetic value and subtle storytelling make it a worthwhile watch, structured around a romance that doesn’t get in the way of socio-political relevance. Sircar shared that the story was inspired by a real-life account during the peak of the insurgency and that he had to compromise on the original ending, which he now regrets.
