  • Saamana slams Maharashtra govt, Centre for poor healthcare after Bhandara hospital fire

    MUMBAI: After the death of 10 newborns in a fire at Bhandara district hospital, Shiv Sena on Monday criticised the health care system of Maharashtra and the country at large and said India talks about being the fifth largest economic power in the world, but it is not even in the list of top 75 countries when it comes to healthcare and related services.

    The party, through its mouthpiece Saamana, also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of starting politics on the incident.

    “Ten newborns died in the fire in the general hospital of Bhandara district of the state. Many of these babies did not even open their eyes after birth.

    The parents of some children did not even see their babies alive…The incident has raised questions on the health care system of not just the state, but the entire country,” it said.

    Shiv Sena pointed out that the government hospital in Bhandara did not even have smoke detectors or fire extinguishers and the hospital staff was also missing at the time of the incident.

    “Chief Minister Thackeray has ordered a high-level inquiry. The reason behind the fire will be investigated.

    The government has ordered to audit the child care units of all other hospitals of the state. But this sleep is broken after the death of ten infants, is anyone sad? According to the Prime Minister, the Bhandara incident is heartbreaking. But the issue is not only with Bhandara, but the entire health system of the country is suffocating,” the party said.

    The party further said the health care system is given the lowest provision in both state and union budgets, and added, “This negligence has been paid by ten newborns of Bhandara Hospital.”

    Citing the World Health Organisation, Shiv Sena said there should be one doctor per 1,000 people, but in India, there is only one doctor on 12,000 people.

    It said that there is a shortage of 4 lakh doctors and 25 lakh nurses in the country and in many areas of Maharashtra, people still have to walk many miles for first aid.

    “Many pregnant women give birth on the way. The corpses have to be carried on bullock carts and handcarts. This should not be the case for the state that is called ‘progressive’ like Maharashtra,” the party said and added that though children in Bhandara due to fire, but hundreds of children in Vidarbha region of the state, in Thane, and many tribal pads of North Maharashtra die due to malnutrition.

    “As long as it does not stop, the words ‘development’ and ‘progress’ have no meaning,” it stated further.

    Accusing BJP of doing politics on the incident, Shiv Sena said, “The death of 10 infants is the responsibility of the government, but even those in power in the last five years cannot save their skin.”

    “This is the extent of shamelessness…Is not the development of the general hospital of Bhandara district in the development of Vidarbha? It is not right to do politics on this accident,” the party said slamming BJP. 

  • Maharashtra govt slashes security cover of Fadnavis, Raj Thackeray

    MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has reduced the security of Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Devendra Fadnavis and his family, former UP governor Ram Naik and MNS president Raj Thackeray, and withdrawn the security cover of state BJP chief Chandrakant Patil.

    State BJP spokesman Keshav Upadhye termed it as “vendetta politics”, while former chief minister Fadnavis said this would not impact his plans to travel and meet people.

    As per a government notification issued on January 8, Fadnavis will now get ‘Y-plus security with escort’, instead of the ‘Z-plus’ cover.

    The security of his wife Amruta Fadnavis and daughter Divija has been downgraded from ‘Y-plus with escort’ to ‘X’ category.

    Former Uttar Pradesh governor Ram Naik will now get ‘Y’ cover instead of ‘Y-plus’.

    MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s security cover has been downgraded from ‘Z’ to ‘Y plus with escort’.

    The security covers of BJP leader and former CM Narayan Rane, state BJP chief Chandrakant Patil and senior party leader Sudhir Mungantiwar have been withdrawn.

    Rane had ‘Y-plus’ security.

    Besides, the security of state Lokayukta M L Tahiliani has been downgraded from ‘Z’ to ‘Y’.

    The government, as per the notification, has upgraded the security of two persons, downgraded of 11, withdrawn of 16, while 13 new people have got security cover.

    Prominent among the new persons to get security are Sunetra Pawar, wife of state Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, and Varun Sardesai, secretary of the Yuva Sena and nephew of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s wife Rashmi Thackeray.

    Both have been given ‘X’ security cover.

    Union minister Ramdas Athawale will get only ‘wireless’ instead of the ‘Y-plus with escort’, while central minister Raosaheb Danve’s ‘Y-plus’ cover has been withdrawn.

    The government has also withdrawn the security cover of former minister Rajkumar Badole, BJP MLAs Prasad Lad and Ram Kadam, and former speaker and BJP legislator Haribhau Bagde.

    The state has also withdrawn the ‘X’ category security of former Mumbai Congress chief Kripashankar Singh, who quit the party, andBJP’s former minister Shobhatai Fadnavis, an aunt of Devendra Fadnavis.

    Senior advocate Ujjwal Nikam’s ‘Y-plus with escort’ cover has been upgraded to ‘Z’, while film actor and Congress leader Shatrughan Sinha’s ‘Y-plus’ cover has been upgraded to ‘Y-plus with escort’.

    The security of BJP’s former minister Ashish Shelar has been downgraded from ‘Y-plus’ to ‘Y’.

    State Legislative Council Chairman Ramraje Naik Nimbalkarand Relief and Rehabilitation minister Vijay Wadettiwar will get ‘Y-plus with escort’, while Shiv Sena MLA Vaibhav Naik, who had defeated Narayan Rane in the 2014 Assembly polls, will get ‘X’ security cover.

    Current state ministers Sandeepan Bhumre, Sunil Kedar, Dilip Walse Patil and Abdul Sattar, Leader of Opposition in the Council Pravin Darekar and state Assembly’s Deputy Speaker Narhari Zhirwal have been given ‘Y’ cover.

    Meanwhile, state BJP spokesman Keshav Upadhye alleged that the security of Fadnavis and other BJP leaders was downgraded out of “political vendetta”.

    “The decision shows what kind of a mindset the government has, and it is unfortunate. During the COVID-19 lockdown period, Fadnavis was travelling to the nook and corner of the state, while Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was sitting at home,” he claimed.

    Upadhye said Fadnavis was the first to reach Bhandara where 10 babies died in fire at a hospital on Saturday.

    “Even if the entire security cover is removed, he (Fadnavis) would continue to travel in the state and highlight the voice of the people,” the BJP leader said.

    Reacting to the government’s decision, Fadnavis said he had no complaints or worry.

    “I am a people’s person and this doesn’t impact my travel (schedules) to meet people,” he said.

    Narayan Rane said he was given security by Mumbai police because he had a threat from terrorists.

    “I have no complaints. If anything happens to me, the state government is to be blamed,” he said.

    Sudhir Mungantiwar said he was given security due to Naxal threat.

    “I thank the government for withdrawing my security cover. This means the Naxal threat doesn’t exist. Our aim to highlight people’s voice will be more stronger,” he said.

  • Maharashtra hospital fire: Rahul Gandhi appeals to state govt to provide assistance to affected kin

    NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Saturday condoled the death of newborn babies in the Maharashtra hospital fire and appealed to the state government to provide all possible assistance to the families of the deceased and the injured.

    Ten newborns died after the fire broke out in the Special Newborn Care Unit of a hospital in Maharashtra’s Bhandara district in the early hours of Saturday, doctors said.

    The babies were aged between a month and three months, according to a doctor.

    The unfortunate incident of fire at Bhandara District General Hospital in Maharashtra is extremely tragic.My condolences to the families of the children who lost their lives.I appeal to Maha Govt to provide every possible assistance to the families of the injured & deceased.

    District civil surgeon Pramod Khandate said there were 17 babies in the unit of whom seven could be rescued.

    “The unfortunate incident of fire at Bhandara District General Hospital in Maharashtra is extremely tragic. My condolences to the families of the children who lost their lives,” Gandhi said in a tweet.

    “I appeal to Maha Govt to provide every possible assistance to the families of the injured & deceased,” he said.

    The Maharashtra government is led by the Shiv Sena with the NCP and the Congress part of the ruling dispensation.

  • Is using Sambhaji Maharaj’s name crime, asks Sanjay Raut on renaming row

    MUMBAI: Days after the Congress objected to Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) mentioning Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar in a tweet, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Friday asked whether using the name of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in government documents a crime.

    The Shiv Sena, which currently shares power with the Congress and the NCP in Maharashtra, has time and again demanded that Aurangabad in central part of the state be renamed as Sambhajinagar, after the elder son of warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji.

    However, Maharashtra minister and state Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat has been saying that his party would strongly oppose the move to rename Aurangabad.

    Two days back, the Maharashtra CMO, in one of the tweets about cabinet decisions, had mentioned the city as Sambhajinagar.

    However, Thorat had objected to it saying that the Directorate of Information and Publicity should not rename cities on its own and that it should remember that official work is a legal document.

    When asked about it, Raut told reporters in Nashik that a government functions in the name of chief minister.

    “Is using the name of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Shivaji Maharaj on government documents a crime? It is people’s sentiment and the government functions on the basis of people’s sentiments,” he said.

    Raut said Sambhajinagar was the name given to Aurangabad city by late Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray.

    “It will remain that way,” he said.

    To a question on Congress’s argument that the renaming issue was not part of the common minimum programme (CMP) of the three parties, Raut said the CMP is meant to ensure the welfare of the people.

    “The CMP does not say people’s wishes shouldn’t be accepted,” he said.

    Aurangabad, once the headquarters of the Dakkhan (Deccan) province in Mughal empire, derives its name from Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

    Replying to questions on the upcoming local bodies elections, Raut said all the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies were trying to find a common ground to contest the local elections together.

    “We may succeed in some places to fight unitedly,” he said.

    The Sena leader also criticised the delay in approving the names of 12 candidates for their nomination to the state Legislative Council by Governor B S Koshyari from his quota.

    “Constitutional values should be upheld by those holding constitutional posts.

    The Constitution clearly mentions that it is mandatory to accept the recommendation regarding the names submitted by the cabinet,” he said.

    “Make it clear first whether you want to keep the issue pending till you topple the MVA dispensation and get a government of your choice,” he said.

    When asked whether he was referring to the governor or the BJP, Raut said, “It is up to you. I have said what I wanted to.”

    “Despite propagating that Rahul Gandhi is a weak leader, he is still standing and attacking the government at every opportunity he gets,” it said.

    Shiv Sena’s praise for Rahul Gandhi comes a fortnight after Sena MP Sanjay Raut called for expanding the scope of the Congress-led UPA bloc, saying the Opposition should unite against the “dictatorial attitude” of the Centre and provide a “formidable alternative” to the Modi government.

    Ahead of next month’s Aurangabad Municipal Corporation elections, the Sena and Congress, partners in the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance in Maharashtra, have been at loggerheads over a demand to rename that city.

  • Three held in Thane for attempting to gun down Shiv Sena leader Deepak Mhatre, wife

    THANE: Three persons were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to gun down a Shiv Sena leader and his wife in Bhiwandi of Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said.

    Two motorcycle-borne men fired three rounds at Deepak Mhatre, who is the party’s branch head in Kalher village, and his wife Mangala, on January 3, additional commissioner of police Sanjay Yenpure said.

    The couple, who is contesting the upcoming gram panchayat elections, managed to escape unhurt and an offence was registered at the time under relevant sections of the Arms Act and the IPC at Narpoli police station.

    Based on a tip-off, the police nabbed Vicky alias Sonu Prakash Mhatre (25), dumper driver Pratam Kishore Bhoir (20) and Vaibha Vijay Bhokare (25) for the attack, senior inspector Ashok Honmane of the Bhiwandi crime branch said.

    The couple had been attacked, as they were contesting the gram panchayat polls at Kalher village, which is slated to be held on January 15.
