  • Mexico, Chile And Costa Rica Begin Inoculation As First Vaccine Shipment Arrives

With the arrival of the first batch of COVID-19 vaccine shipment from Russia, Latin American countries Mexico, Chile, and Costa Rica begin a mass vaccination campaign as they inoculate the high-risk priority groups such as frontline doctors and medics and nursing home elderly occupants. Mexico, one of the hardest hit by the pandemic with a grim figure for a death toll became the first Latin American country to roll out the vaccines on LIVE television after it procured nearly 3,000 doses of Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine. Shortly, Chile and Costa Rica joined Mexico and began mass inoculation, with Argentina next in line to start vaccinating people with Russian manufactured vaccine Sputnik V.

According to AP, frontline medics and healthcare workers were the first ones to get the Pfizer vaccine shots at the Metropolitan Hospital in Santiago in Chile. Chile became the first South American country and the second Latin American nation after Mexico to begin vaccination. Health minister Enrique Paris announced that the southern hardest-hit regions of La Araucanía, Biobío, and Magallanes will start vaccination first as 10,000 additional shipments are expected next week. Meanwhile, Brazil announced that it will begin vaccination in mid-February, 2021, even as the country continues to be ravaged by the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Interpol Warns Against Attacks On COVID-19 Vaccine Shipment

The International Criminal Police Organization or Interpol’s chief Juergen Stock on December 21 predicted a hike in organised crimes related to acquiring COVID-19 vaccines as several nations begin administering people with the doses hoping to control the pandemic. While talking to business weekly WirtschaftsWoche and later posting on Twitter, Stock warned against the hike in crimes including thefts, warehouse break-ins and even attack vaccine shipments.

Calling vaccines “liquid gold”, Interpol chief alerted about the crime network benefitting from the entire pandemic. Stock’s remarks came as at least 16 countries have already approved the vaccine produced by German company BioNTech in collaboration with US giant Pfizer. As per reports, the secretary-general of the France-based global policing agency also said that he is expecting more graft cases related to COVID-19 vaccines. He noted that “corruption will be rampant” in areas where the doses are available sooner than the rest of the world.

  • Shipments Of Moderna Vaccine Leave Production Facilities In US

First shipment of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, on December 20, left a distribution centre in the US, a desperate move to curb the spread of COVID-19. The much-needed shots are expected to be inoculated starting December 23, just three days after the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) authorized their emergency use. America started its ambitious mass inoculation programme on December 14 and is the only nation to authorize two vaccine candidates.

According to Associated Press, several trucks on Sunday left the factory in the Memphis area in the state of Tennessee carrying vaccine developed by Moderna Inc. and the National Institutes of Health for later distribution. While health officials have prioritized frontline healthcare workers and elderly citizens for inoculation, a committee is set to meet to discuss people who should be next in line for vaccine shots. Regardless, experts have predicted that the general population would have to wait until the spring of 2021 to get the vaccine.
