In a powerful address at Kolkata’s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called on the shipyard to pioneer advanced vessels in the technology era, positioning it as a cornerstone for India’s developed nation goal by 2047.

Visiting the facility to connect with employees and families, Singh stressed adaptation to rapid technological shifts. He envisioned GRSE constructing innovative platforms that set global benchmarks in shipbuilding, directly supporting PM Modi’s Viksit Bharat initiative.

Reflecting on GRSE’s storied past, Singh noted its 150-year journey delivering warships, frigates, and vessels to the Navy and Coast Guard, fortifying India’s sea defenses and boosting the blue economy. ‘Indian shipyards like GRSE are vibrant pages of our defense and industrial saga,’ he said.

Singh movingly described GRSE-built ships as symbols beyond metal: representations of collective labor, inventive engineering, meticulous craftsmanship, and patriotic fervor. He hailed workers as nation-builders, not just professionals, whose grit has achieved extraordinary feats.

Looking ahead, the minister acknowledged rising challenges like novel tech and fierce rivalry but rallied the workforce: ‘Your unwavering effort will elevate GRSE to stellar heights in worldwide shipbuilding.’

The occasion brimmed with energy as families presented colorful cultural shows, earning Singh’s praise for showcasing India’s pluralistic unity and rich traditions. Present were GRSE’s top leadership, including CMD Commodore P R Hari (Retd.), and defence ministry dignitaries.

In a strategic move to fortify America’s naval dominance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth inaugurated the Arsenal of Freedom tour on January 6 in Washington. This initiative promises sweeping changes in shipbuilding, defense acquisitions, and bolstering military capabilities under the Trump administration.

Speaking at Virginia’s Newport News Shipyard, Hegseth committed to massive investments in the maritime industrial base for rapid advancement. Shipyard employees and troops embody national security’s heart, he emphasized: ‘We’re in the business of strength.’

The nationwide tour will spotlight factories and shipyards, demonstrating Trump’s vision for revitalized US manufacturing and defense preparedness. Core tenets include prioritizing America and its people, achieving peace via power, and dismissing claims of American frailty.

Hegseth warned that countries ceasing production lag and weaken. Trump rejects such decline, sparking America’s path to renewed strength and wealth. Enlistments in the War Department are booming, outpacing last year’s record with even greater momentum this year.

Rebuilding the military tops the agenda, focusing on discipline, training, standards, and deadliness with a warrior ethos. A record-breaking trillion-dollar-plus defense budget supports modern tech and superior leadership.

Equally vital is forging deterrence formidable enough to deter foes from provocation. Hegseth slammed prior policies for eroding confidence in US resolve, citing actions against Houthis, Iran, and cartels. The flawless mission arresting Maduro in Venezuela exemplifies this shift—no American lives lost.

Golden Fleet plans feature next-gen Trump-class battleships and ramped-up submarine output, proclaiming unyielding US naval supremacy. Contracting overhauls penalize delays and cost overruns, rewarding only efficient performers.

To shipyard staff: ‘Warfighters depend on you—we fight together.’ As Huntington Ingalls’ facility, Newport News uniquely crafts nuclear carriers and shares submarine production for the Navy.

President Donald Trump has urged foreign companies to not only invest in the United States but also to bring in expert personnel to train American workers in advanced manufacturing. Trump emphasized the need for the US to relearn skills, especially in sectors like semiconductors and shipbuilding, by learning directly from foreign companies making significant investments in the country. He stated that he wants these companies to bring their experts to teach and train American workers, facilitating knowledge transfer to ensure long-term benefits from foreign investment and restore American industrial strength. Trump cited shipbuilding as an example, highlighting the decline in US shipbuilding capabilities and advocating for temporary assistance from foreign experts to rebuild American expertise. He asserted that the US welcomes foreign investment and is open to learning from international partners to enhance its manufacturing capabilities.
