  • Trolled over a photo, Shashi Tharoor hits back at trolls, calls them ‘organised brigade of Bhakts’

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor hit back at trolls on Tuesday for mocking a picture at a wedding in which he figured, saying he is used to being trolled by an “organised brigade of Bhakts” but dragging non-political people into “your malice is not cool”.

Several people on Twitter shared a picture of Tharoor at the wedding, taking jibes at him over his picture with the young couple on their marriage day.

“I am used to being trolled by an organised brigade of Bhakts & I can take it, knowing it comes w/the territory. But dragging non-political people into your malice is not cool, and insulting a young couple on their wedding day to take cheap shots at their guest is disgraceful,” he said.

Later, responding to a Twitter user, who asked him what he means by “bhakts”, Tharoor said, “Bhakti towards the divine is to be respected.

Bhakti towards a political leader or cause, especially in the name of religion, is deplorable.

“‘Bhakts’ in the latter sense refers to the devotees of the Sangh Parivar & Moditva,” he said.

Tharoor has been trolled recently over various posts of his, from a photo with six women parliamentarians to wrongly describing sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan as a sitar player.

  • After Priyanka Chaturvedi, Tharoor now steps down as Sansad TV host in protest against suspension of Opposition Rajya Sabha MPs

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Expressing solidarity with the 12 suspended Rajya Sabha MPs, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday said he has decided to suspend hosting of a talk show on Sansad TV until the suspension of the legislators is revoked and a “semblance of bipartisanship restored to the conduct of Parliament”.

Tharoor has been hosting the talk show “To The Point” on Sansad TV.

“I believed that my accepting Sansad TV’s invitation to host a show was in the best traditions of India’s parliamentary democracy, reaffirming the principle that our political differences did not prevent us, as Members of Parliament, from participating fully in various parliamentary institutions which belong to us all,” the MP from Thiruvananthapuram said.

“However, the prolonged suspension of 12 MPs from the Rajya Sabha, expelled in an arbitrary manner for actions committed during a previous session, has called into question the very assumption of a bipartisan spirit animating the work of Parliament,” he said.

Tharoor said that in solidarity with the protesting MPs, he has decided to suspend hosting of the talk show “To the Point” on Sansad TV until such time as the suspensions of MPs are revoked and a “semblance of bipartisanship restored to the conduct of Parliament and the functioning of Sansad TV”.

His statement comes a day after Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, who is among the 12 suspended Rajya Sabha MPs, said she has stepped down as the anchor of the Sansad TV’s show “Meri Kahaani”.

The 12 opposition MPs — six from the Congress, two each from the Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena, and one each from the CPI and CPI(M) — were suspended from the Rajya Sabha last Monday for the entire Winter Session of Parliament for their “unruly” conduct in the previous session in August.

The Opposition has termed the suspension as “undemocratic and in violation of all the Rules of Procedure” of the Upper House.

  • Tharoor says he was appalled by backlash over his birthday greetings to Advani

    By PTI

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said he was “appalled by the vicious backlash” against his birthday greetings to senior BJP leader L K Advani and alleged that he was being branded as a “Sanghi sympathiser”.

He said only those who haven’t read him would call him a “Sanghi.”

Wishing Advani a happy 92nd birthday, Tharoor on November 9 had posted in his twitter handle a video of the veteran BJP parliament leader’s speech in Parliament and said, “this speech is a reminder of his fine contributions to India’s rich democracy”.

“I am frankly appalled by the vicious backlash against my birthday greetings to LK Advaniji.

Has civility disappeared entirely from our political discourse? Gandhiji taught us to respect & honour the humanity in our political opponents.

It seems that now makes me a Sanghi sympathiser!,” Tharoor said in a tweet.

Referring to the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, the Thiruvananthapuram MP said he intends to continue to wish Adavani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on their birthdays, while opposing them politically.

“In fact Gandhiji taught us to fight the sin but love(embrace)the sinner. Ahimsa is “a positive state of love, of doing good even to the evildoer”.

While good & evil are Gandhian terms I can’t easily use (most human beings are shades of both), I deplore intolerance on either side.

“So yes, I intend to continue to wish LK Advani & @narendramodi well on their birthdays, while opposing what they stand for politically. My 40 years of writing makes clear what I believe in. Only those who haven’t read me would call me a Sanghi. My values won’t be discarded 4them,” he tweeted.

Tharoor also wrote on his Facebook account both in English and Malayalam, condemning the social media attack on him for wishing the country’s former Deputy Prime Minister on his birthday.

  • Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s appeal, Gujarati origin suit Narendra Modi: Kerala MP Shashi Tharoor

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel represents a national appeal and a Gujarati origin that suit Narendra Modi and the “Modi-as-latter-day-Patel” message has been resonating well with many Gujaratis, argues Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.

The Thiruvananthapuram MP also feels that Modi made a shrewd domestic political calculation – that wrapping himself in the mantle of distinguished Gujaratis Mahatma Gandhi and Patel would enable some of their lustre to rub off on him.

Tharoor makes these observations in his new book “Pride, Prejudice and Punditry: The Essential Shashi Tharoor”, which brings together various fiction, non-fiction and poetry from his published works as well as many pieces written specially for this volume.

“Narendra Modi made a shrewd domestic political calculation – that wrapping himself in the mantle of other distinguished Gujaratis, notably Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, would enable some of their lustre to rub off on him,” he writes in this book.

“The process had already begun, lest we forget, when then chief minister Modi moved aggressively to lay claim to the legacy of one of India’s most respected founding fathers, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, before the 2014 election,” he says.

Tharoor claims that in his “quest to garb himself in a more distinguished lineage than his party can ordinarily lay claim to, Modi called on farmers across India to donate iron from their ploughs to construct a giant, nearly 600-foot statue, of the Iron Man in his state, which would be by far the tallest statue in the world, dwarfing the Statue of Liberty”.

But it will be “less of a monument to the modest Gandhian it ostensibly honours than an embodiment of the overweening ambitions of its builder – who decided to get a Chinese foundry to cast it, for his ambitions exceeded India’s capacities”, he adds.

The imposing 182-m Statue of Unity of Patel, built on an islet Sadhu Bet near Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat’s Narmada district, is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty in the US.

It was inaugurated by Modi on October 31, 2018.

According to Tharoor, Modi’s motives are easy to divine.

“As his own image was tarnished by the communal massacre in Gujarat when he was chief minister in 2002, identifying himself with Patel is an attempt at character building by association – portraying Modi himself as an embodiment of the tough, decisive man of action that Patel was, rather than the destructive bigot his enemies decry,” he writes.

Tharoor says it helps that Patel is widely admired for his extraordinary role in forging India that gave him an unchallenged standing as the Iron Man.

“Patel represents both a national appeal and a Gujarati origin that suits Modi. The Modi-as-latter-day-Patel message has been resonating well with many Gujaratis, who are proud to be reminded of a native son the nation looks up to, and with many of India’s urban middle class, who see in Modi a strong leader to cut through the confusion and indecision of India’s messy democracy,” he argues.

Tharoor thinks there is a particular irony to a self-proclaimed ‘Hindu nationalist’ like Modi laying claim to the legacy of a Gandhian leader who would never have qualified his Indian nationalism with a religious label.

“Sardar Patel believed in equal rights for all irrespective of their religion or caste,” he says.

In one of the essays on Jawaharlal Nehru’s legacy, Tharoor cites Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s emotional and poetic tribute in Parliament to India’s first prime minister after his death.”

Vajpayee’s statements went far beyond the claims of ritual.

He called on the nation to rededicate itself to Nehru’s ideals.

“‘With unity, discipline and self-confidence,’ Vajpayee said, in words that could never have been Modi’s, ‘we must make this Republic of ours flourish. The leader has gone, but the followers remain. The sun has set, yet by the shadow of stars we must find our way. These are testing times, but we must dedicate ourselves to his great aim, so that India can become strong, capable and prosperous…,’” Tharoor writes.

In the book, published by Aleph, Tharoor looks at some of the most important figures of modern Indian history, covers international relations and diplomacy, examines various aspects of the faith and comes up with a light-hearted take on sundry matters besides an evocative look at his Kerala heritage among other topics.

  • SC cannot be stymied by failure of witnesses to appear: Tharoor on Pegasus order

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday said the Supreme Court cannot be stymied by witnesses’ failure to appear or members refusing to sign attendance register — the means by which — the Congress MP alleged the parliamentary panel on IT was thwarted from looking into the Pegasus issue.

The remarks by the chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology came after the Supreme Court-appointed a three-member panel of cyber experts to probe the alleged use of Pegasus spyware for surveillance of certain people in India.

“Supreme Court orders inquiry into GoI’s (Government of India’s) use of Pegasus spyware. Just as well the SC cannot be stymied by the failure of witnesses to appear when summoned, or members refusing to sign the attendance register — the means by which the Parl Cmt was thwarted,” Tharoor tweeted.

The Tharoor-headed IT panel was to hold a meeting on July 28 during which several issues including the Pegasus snooping allegations were expected to be discussed.

It had also summoned officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Communications (Department of Telecommunications) on the subject “Citizens data security and privacy”.

However, the meeting could not take place as the BJP members of the panel did not sign the attendance register, even though they were present in the meeting room, leading to a lack of quorum.

E-mail communications were received by the committee branch of the secretariat on July 28 afternoon from the three ministries/department that their representatives would not be able to appear before the committee due to Parliament-related work. Tharoor had written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to take action over ministry officials not attending the panel meeting.

In a significant verdict over the issue of protecting citizens’ right to privacy, a bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana asserted that in a democratic country governed by the rule of law, indiscriminate spying on individuals cannot be allowed except with sufficient statutory safeguards by following the procedure established by law under the Constitution.

Stating that it was compelled to take up the cause to determine the truth and get to the bottom of the spying allegations, the SC said the entire citizenry is affected by these charges due to the “potential chilling effect”, lamenting that no clear stand was taken by the Centre regarding actions taken by it over the Pegasus row.

  • Delhi High Court extends stay on criminal defamation proceedings against Congress MP Shashi Tharoor

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court Thursday extended an interim stay on criminal proceedings against Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in a defamation complaint about his alleged “scorpion on shivling” remarks referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Justice Mukta Gupta listed Tharoor’s plea, which has challenged the summons issued against him by the trial court on the complaint filed by BJP leader Rajiv Babbar, for hearing on February 23 and said “interim orders to continue”.

Lawyer Gaurav Gupta, appearing for Tharoor, said that the pleadings in the case were complete and the case may be listed for final hearing.

Tharoor has sought setting aside of the trial court’s April 27, 2019 order by which he was summoned as accused in the criminal defamation complaint.

The plea has also sought quashing of the complaint dated November 2, 2018.

Last October, the court had issued notice on Tharoor’s plea and sought a response from Babbar while granting an interim stay on the proceedings before a trial court here.

Senior counsel Vikas Pahwa, appearing for Tharoor, had argued that the trial court’s order was bad in law and against the settled principles of criminal jurisprudence as it completely overlooked the fact that the complaint filed by Babbar was completely false and frivolous.

The criminal complaint was filed against Tharoor in the trial court by Babbar, who had claimed that his religious sentiments were hurt by the Congress leader’s statement.

In October 2018, Tharoor had claimed that an unnamed RSS leader had allegedly compared Prime Minister Modi to “a scorpion sitting on a Shivling”.

He termed it an “extraordinarily striking metaphor”.

Tharoor was granted bail in the case in June last year by the trial court.

The complainant had said, “I am a devotee of Lord Shiva…However, the accused (Tharoor) completely disregarded the sentiments of crores of Shiva devotees, (and) made the statement that hurt the sentiments of all Lord Shiva devotees, both in India and outside the country.”

“The complainant’s religious sentiments were hurt and the accused deliberately did this malicious act, intending to outrage the religious feelings of Lord Shiva devotees by insulting their religious belief,” the complaint had claimed.

It had also described Tharoor’s statement as “intolerable abuse” and “absolute vilification” of the faith of millions of people.

The complaint was filed under sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

  • Tharoor credits government for COVID vaccine milestone; Khera says ‘insult’ to families who suffered ‘mismangement’

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said credit should be given to the government for achieving the 100-crore COVID vaccine dose landmark in the country, drawing a sharp response from party colleague Pawan Khera, who asserted that giving credit is an “insult” to millions of families that “suffered due to the mismanagement” of the pandemic.

India achieved a major milestone in its vaccination programme against COVID-19 as the cumulative vaccine doses administered in the country surpassed the 100-crore mark on Thursday.

Reacting to the development, Tharoor tweeted, “This is a matter of pride for all Indians. Let’s give the Government credit.”

“After severe mismanagement of the second COVID wave & botching the vaccination orders that might have prevented it, Govt has now partly redeemed itself. It remains accountable for its earlier failures,” the Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram said.

Tagging Tharoor’s tweet, Khera, a Congress spokesperson, said giving credit to “the government is an insult to millions of families who suffered and are still suffering from the after-effects and side effects of widespread COVID mismanagement”.

“Before seeking credit, PM must apologise to those families. The credit belongs to scientists & medical fraternity,” he tweeted.

  • ‘Smacks of racism’: Jairam Ramesh, Shashi Tharoor slam UK’s Covid travel rules for vaccinated Indians

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Former Union ministers Jairam Ramesh and Shashi Tharoor on Monday slammed the UK’s COVID-19-related travel rules under which Indians vaccinated with Covishield would still be treated as unvaccinated, with Ramesh saying it “smacks of racism”.

Passengers who aren’t recognised as being fully vaccinated with authorised vaccines and certificates under England’s international travel rules, including Indians, will still have to take a pre-departure test, a day 2 and day 8 PCR test, and self-isolate at their given address for 10 days upon entry, according to the rules.

Tweeting on the restrictions, Congress leader Ramesh said, “Absolutely bizarre considering Covishield was originally developed in the UK and The Serum Institute, Pune has supplied to that country too! This smacks of racism.”

Tagging a thread on Twitter that explained the rules, Tharoor also slammed the restrictions on vaccinated Indians, saying, “Because of this I have pulled out of a debate at the @cambridgeunion & out of launch events for the UK edition of my book #TheBattleOfBelonging (published there as #TheStruggleForIndiasSoul).”

“It is offensive to ask fully vaccinated Indians to quarantine. The Brits are reviewing!” the former minister of state for external affairs said.

    — Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) September 20, 2021
From October 4, the current traffic light system of red, amber and green countries based on levels of COVID-19 risk will be scrapped in the UK and replaced with one red list only.

The scrapping of an amber list, which is what India is currently on, means reduced cost burden for travellers — especially for the Indian diaspora vaccinated in the UK — related to compulsory PCR tests.

However, an expanded list of countries whose vaccines are recognised in England does not include India, which means that Indians vaccinated with Covishield — the Serum Institute of India produced Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine — would still be subjected to the restrictions mandatory for those unvaccinated.

  • Shashi Tharoor calls for permanent president to head Congress

    By PTI

KOCHI: Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday called for a permanent president to head the party, which is ‘now at an interim stage’.

He said all the Congress leaders have sought a permanent president for the party.

“We all liked the leadership of Sonia Gandhi. But we are now at an interim stage. For the last two years we haven’t had a permanent president. That must be remedied. We need to instill energy in the organisational structure of the Congress party. We all have sought for a permanent president for the party,” he said.

Tharoor was speaking to reporters after the inauguration of the office of Muvattupuzha legislator Mathew Kuzhalnadan here.

He said Sonia Gandhi has sought to be relieved of her duties for several years now.

“Hopefully a new leadership will emerge under Rahul Gandhi. If that is the case, it has to happen soon,” the Thiruvananthapuram MP added.
