In a moving social media post, action star Jackie Shroff honored the late Shashi Kapoor on what would have been his birthday, flooding Instagram with cherished photographs that evoke the golden era of Bollywood. ‘You will always remain in our hearts,’ read his poignant caption, striking a chord with admirers of the veteran actor’s timeless charm.

Shashi Kapoor’s journey in Hindi cinema was nothing short of extraordinary. From romantic leads in blockbusters such as ‘Kanyadaan’ and ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ to intense roles in ‘Junoon’ and ’36 Chowringhee Lane,’ he excelled across genres. His theatrical roots with Prithvi Theatre added depth to his performances, earning him accolades on stage and screen alike.

India’s highest civilian honors befitted his stature: the Padma Bhushan acknowledged his cultural impact, while the 2014 Dadasaheb Phalke Award cemented his place in the Kapoor dynasty’s hall of fame alongside Prithviraj and Raj. This trifecta underscored the family’s unparalleled dominance in Indian cinema.

Shashi’s life off-screen was equally inspiring. A private figure who shunned the party circuit, his devotion to Jennifer Kendal was legendary. Meeting during theater days, they overcame odds to marry, embracing a disciplined life together. She oversaw his health regimen—structured meals, family time on weekends, and abstinence from vices—setting him apart as the fittest Kapoor.

Heartbreak came with Jennifer’s cancer diagnosis. After years of struggle, she departed in 1984, leaving Shashi to nurture their children alone. His quiet strength in adversity mirrors the dignity he brought to every role. Jackie Shroff’s tribute serves as a reminder of Shashi Kapoor’s enduring influence, blending artistry, integrity, and love.

Today marks the birth anniversary of Shashi Kapoor, Bollywood’s evergreen charmer whose contributions to cinema earned him the nation’s highest honors, including the Dada Saheb Phalke Award. Tributes pour in from across the industry, highlighting his multifaceted genius.

Stepping into the spotlight is Anil Kapoor, who reveals Shashi as the spark behind his acting dreams. Their connection runs deep, originating from the sets of ‘Tu Payal Main Geet.’ Anil, then a boy, slipped into the role of young Shashi, an experience that awakened his lifelong love for the craft.

In a nostalgic social media post with vintage pictures, Anil writes, ‘Shashi Kapoor and I started this journey long ago. Playing his younger self in ‘Tu Payal Main Geet’ as a kid left a lasting impression. He sensed my acting fervor right from those early moments.’

Praising Shashi as unmatched in allure, warmth, and grace, Anil notes his pioneering role in film production and establishing Prithvi Theatre. ‘Without his unwavering support and affection, my path in Hindi cinema wouldn’t have been possible,’ Anil gratefully acknowledges.

Anil’s rise also owes much to Dilip Kumar, who spotted his spark on a college stage and handed him a trophy amid applause. These early endorsements from giants like Shashi and Dilip were the launchpad for Anil’s journey to becoming a superstar.

As Bollywood honors Shashi Kapoor, stories like Anil’s remind us of his role not just as an actor, but as a mentor whose encouragement built careers and legacies.

Every superstar has a story of grit behind the glamour, and Anil Kapoor’s rise from modest earnings to iconic status unfolded vividly on ‘Wheel of Fortune’. The actor, appearing as a guest alongside host Akshay Kumar, transported viewers back to 1976, when his acting career kicked off with a mere Rs 250 from a Doordarshan stint in Worli.

‘That was my first hard-earned money,’ Anil shared emotionally. ‘Spotting myself on TV ignited a fire in me.’ He’s on a quest for that vintage footage, eager to critique his nascent talent. Transitioning to college memories, Anil described his theatre debut where legendary Shashi Kapoor awarded him Best Actor. ‘It was a turning point,’ he noted. ‘I felt destined for the screen and pursued acting courses with renewed vigor.’

Laughter ensued when a puzzle evoked ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Laga’. Anil quipped it was Madhuri’s song entirely, though Akshay insisted on shared glory. Behind the scenes, Saroj Khan’s choreography at RK Studio came after exhaustive days. ‘We shot two films by day and this at night—yet it sparkles with freshness,’ Anil explained.

These anecdotes highlight Anil’s perseverance, from small-screen starts to blockbuster hits. Fans tuning into Sony Entertainment Television or SonyLIV witnessed not just games, but a masterclass in Bollywood resilience, proving that true stars are forged in quiet beginnings.

Picture a sun-baked Australian outback, where Greta Scacchi’s face—etched with quiet conflict—tells a tale richer than words. This iconic moment from ‘The Man from Snowy River II’ exemplifies the actress’s mastery of subtle emotion, a skill that first mesmerized Indian viewers in the 1983 gem ‘Heat and Dust.’ There, opposite Shashi Kapoor’s enigmatic Nawab, she navigated the complexities of cross-cultural romance in colonial India, earning global recognition.

Celebrating her birthday on February 18, Scacchi’s journey began in Milan in 1960, blending Italian flair with British poise. Raised in Australia after her family’s move, she sought acting refinement in Britain, graduating from a top-tier institution. Her training shines through in roles demanding emotional precision, free from exaggeration.

‘Heat and Dust’ thrust her into the spotlight, with dual performances across eras that highlighted her range. She followed with daring turns in ‘White Mischief,’ evolving into a symbol of fearless femininity. Mainstream Hollywood saw her spark in ‘The Player,’ but Scacchi’s heart lay in diverse, provocative parts across continents.

European films amplified her international stature, while television awarded her an Emmy for ‘Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny’ in 1996—a testament to her adaptability. Scacchi’s genius lies in restraint: minimal gestures amplifying profound inner worlds. Her collaborations, like with Kapoor, bridged East and West, reminding us of cinema’s power to unite.

As accolades accumulate, Scacchi endures as an actress who prioritizes depth over flash, her legacy etched in the quiet intensity of her portrayals.

In 1975, amidst a year that produced cinematic giants like ‘Sholay’ and ‘Jai Santoshi Maa,’ director Asit Sen released what proved to be the weakest film of his career, ‘Anari.’ The movie featured the less successful pairing of Sharmila Tagore and Shashi Kapoor, with Moushumi Chatterjee in a role that seemed out of place, mirroring the disjointed nature of the film itself. This movie stands out as the most structurally flawed in the director’s filmography, indicating a decline, which was evident in his subsequent works such as ‘Maa Aur Mamta’ and ‘Bairaag,’ the latter starring Dilip Kumar.

‘Anari’ is a disaster in a league of its own. The filming process appears fragmented, with noticeable gaps in the screenplay. A particularly awkward scene highlights this, where Sharmila Tagore’s character, Poonam, a woman seeking to escape poverty, informs Kabir Bedi’s character, Vikram, a man involved in criminal activity, that she was rejected by the hero Raja (Shashi Kapoor). The sequence Poonam describes is absent from the film. The plot centers on an innocent hero, Raja, ensnared in a criminal scheme orchestrated by a con artist (Utpal Dutt, in a Raj Kumar wig), who impersonates the heir to a wealthy family. The patriarch of the wealthy family (Harindranath Chattopadhyay) is blind, which aids the fraud. This forms the second, and more complicated, part of the narrative.

The initial segment of the film introduces Sharmila Tagore as Poonam, a woman from a disadvantaged background searching for a better life. She desires to elevate her relationship with Raja for a brighter future, which is understandable. However, Raja is burdened with familial responsibilities after his brother (Kader Khan, unrecognizable) is murdered due to his union activities. The film’s screenplay feels disjointed and the characters seem like puppets without strings. Sharmila Tagore’s character, Poonam, is the most interesting, striving to escape her fate. She provides Raja with several opportunities to ‘rescue’ her, but how can she be saved by a man who needs rescuing himself?

‘Anari’ had the potential to explore the struggles of those on the brink of financial ruin. However, director Asit Sen appears constrained by financial limitations and a narrative that lacks respect for its characters. The actors struggle with situations and lines that seem out of place. Moushumi Chatterjee’s role is particularly puzzling, as it is unclear whether she is a key part of the story or an afterthought. The songs composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal are unusually lackluster, contrasting with their successful work in other films of the same year. Even the gods appear to fail when things go wrong.

Actress Raakhee Gulzar, celebrated for her roles in films such as ‘Sharmilee’ and ‘Kabhi Kabhie,’ is content with her life in retirement. She expresses happiness in being removed from the competitive nature of the film industry. Looking back at her career, she recalls never feeling in competition with her contemporaries. She remembers the attempts to pit her against Sharmila Tagore during ‘Daag,’ a situation she dismissed. She reflects on her approach to roles, prioritizing the quality of her performance within the given scope of each film.

She fondly remembers her co-stars, especially Shashi Kapoor and Sanjeev Kumar, with whom she shared a bond over food. She also mentions her rapport with Amitabh Bachchan, with whom she frequently collaborated and who would often converse with her in Bengali. While they don’t meet often, she notes the mutual respect and affection they share.

When asked to name her favorite films, she hesitates, but eventually mentions ‘Kabhi Kabhie’ and ‘Daag,’ as well as ‘Doosra Aadmi’ and ‘Wafaa.’ She notes that she was often offered roles that leaned towards the dramatic, which weren’t her preference, as she favored more light-hearted roles. She indicates no plans for a return to acting in the near future, though she has done recent work in Bengali films, where she was offered significant, author-backed roles.
