  • Ranji Trophy 2024: 'Lord Is Back,' Internet Goes Wild As Shardul Thakur Sizzles With Century For Mumbai In Semifinal Against Tamil Nadu | cricket news

Shardul Thakur entered the 2024 Ranji Trophy semi-final clash against Tamil Nadu at the Bandra-Kurla Complex Stadium with a noteworthy twist in his career batting statistics: his Test batting average of 19.47 surpassed his overall first-class average of 16.97, which outside of Test cricket stood at 16.48.

Making his mark from the onset, Thakur, while opening the bowling, swiftly dismissed Sai Sudharsan with just the fourth delivery of the match. Later, he claimed the crucial wicket of Vijay Shankar, who had amassed 44 runs, the highest for Tamil Nadu, in their total score of 146. Thakur concluded his bowling spell with figures of 2-48. With Mumbai positioned at 45-2 by stumps on day one, they progressed to 91-3 the following morning. However, their fortunes took a downturn when Tamil Nadu's skipper, Sai Kishore, unleashed havoc on their middle order, securing a five-wicket haul as Mumbai faltered to 106-7.

Amidst the turmoil, Thakur partnered with wicketkeeper Hardik Tamore, elevating the score to 125-7 by lunch. Displaying his prowess with the bat, Thakur launched an assault on the Tamil Nadu bowlers. His fifty came in a mere 58 balls, as he dominated a 105-run partnership, overshadowing Tamore's contribution of 35 runs. In a triumphant display, Thakur reached his hundred milestone with flair, smashing an inside-out six off left-arm spinner Ajit Ram. His jubilation was palpable as he dropped his bat and gloves, punching the air in celebration before elegantly paddle-sweeping the next ball for four. Remarkably, he achieved this feat in just 89 balls after tea, signaling a remarkable highlight in his cricketing journey. Fans went crazy on social media after Thakur completed his maiden first class ton and that too in the all important Ranji Trophy semifinal.

  • More all-rounders you have, better it is for any team in T20s: Delhi Capitals pacer Shardul Thakur

    By PTI

MUMBAI: When it comes to all-rounders, more the merrier, feels Delhi Capitals’ Shardul Thakur, who feels that multi-skilled cricketers become key when specialists fail in one department.

The Capitals have all-rounders in abundance including the likes of Mitchell Marsh, Axar Patel, Lalit Yadav, Mandeep Singh and Thakur himself.

“We have great depth in our batting. The more all-rounders are there, the better it is for any team in T20s.

“If we lose quick wickets at the top, then the role of the players batting at 6,7 & 8 becomes important,” Thakur was quoted as saying in a DC media release.

Thakur, who has made vital contributions with ball and bat in the ongoing IPL so far, said he aims to make an impact in every match.

“The environment within the team is quite good. There are a lot of youngsters in the team and we are all friends as we’ve been playing together for some time. I like to make an impact in every match I play and that’s why I play with a lot of energy,” Thakur said.

The Capitals are currently placed sixth in the league table having won two of their four matches.

“The team is moving in the right direction and our Head Coach Ricky Ponting has always told us to play our natural game no matter what the situation is. He backs us so we always try to give our best.”

The seam bowling all-rounder, who has represented India in 25 T20Is, has impressed everyone with the ball and the bat.

“I look to enjoy playing cricket. I have worked hard to reach this stage so I don’t want to put myself under any kind of pressure. Even when the crowd cheers for our opponents in the stadium, I look to enjoy those situations.”

  • Thakur turns things for CSK to lift fourth IPL trophy beating KKR by 27 runs

    By Online Desk

DUBAI: Pacer Shardul Thakur took three wickets to help Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after a solid start in the final of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 here at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday.

Openers Venkatesh Iyer and Shubnam Gill scored fifties to give their team a headstart to chase target 193 but rest of the batting line up faltered quickly in the second half the innings which ended with 165 runs.

Thakur took Iyer’s wicket to break the opening partnership which was the turning point of the game.

Earlier, CSK opener Faf du Plessis scored 86 not out to lead the team to target of 192/3 against KKR.

Openers Du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad gave the three-time champions a solid start which was backed by quick-fire innings by Robin Uthappa and Moeen Ali.

In-form Faf du Plessis saved his best for the last with a blazing 86 off 59 balls as Chennai Super Kings posted a formidable 192 for 3 against Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL final here on Friday.

It was a ‘Daddies’ Day Out’ in the true sense as 37-year-old du Plessis, along with 35-year-olds Robin Uthappa (31 off 15 balls) and Moeen Ali (37 not out off 20 balls), set up a target for KKR which they would find difficult on a big Dubai International Stadium ground with premier batsman Rahul Tripathi injuring his calf muscle.

For KKR’s bowling unit, only Sunil Narine (2/26 in 4 overs) getting his length and variations in pace right.
