Rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has been a subject of public discussion recently. Following his conviction on October 3rd on charges related to prostitution, Combs was sentenced to over four years in prison. The sentence was handed down by Judge Arun Subramanian, who is of Indian descent. Judge Subramanian emphasized that the sentence was necessary to establish accountability and send a strong message to society.

Arun S. Subramanian was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1979. His parents are of Indian origin. He has built a distinguished legal career through his hard work and merit. His father was a control systems engineer, and his mother worked as a bookkeeper.

Subramanian graduated from Case Western Reserve University and earned a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from Columbia Law School in 2004. He began his legal journey with clerkships under Judge Dennis Jacobs (US Court of Appeals, Second Circuit) and Judge Gerard E. Lynch (US District Court, Southern District of New York). He also served as a clerk to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

In 2007, he joined the New York law firm Susman Godfrey LLP, where he worked until 2023, eventually becoming a partner. During his career, he secured over $1 billion in recoveries for clients, represented victims of child pornography trafficking, and fought consumer rights cases.

Subramanian was nominated as a federal judge by former President Joe Biden in 2022, on the recommendation of Senator Chuck Schumer. In 2023, he became the first South Asian judge to be appointed to the Southern District Court of New York.

According to reports, Judge Subramanian clarified that the sentence aimed to send a message about the severe consequences of exploitation and violence against women. Considering the time already served, Combs will now spend an additional 36 months in prison and pay a $500,000 fine.

Subramanian acknowledged Combs as a famous and “iconic” artist, but he deemed the harsh sentence necessary given his history of sexual and physical violence. He dismissed the claims by Combs’ defense team that his “freak-offs” were consensual.

The judge stated that, given the increasing sexual violence in society, a significant sentence was necessary to send the message that those who exploit women will face real accountability. Subramanian rebuked Combs, stating that his crimes were serious and that his violence, pressure, and abuse had ruined the lives of the women who loved and trusted him. He also advised Combs to use his fame for good works.

Before the sentencing, Combs spoke in court for the first time in over a year. He apologized to Cassandra Ventura and the woman who testified as “Jane.” Combs expressed deep regret for failing as a father, losing his freedom, and damaging his image and business.

Combs stated, “I truly apologize for everything, regardless of what people say.” He also stated that the hardest part for him was remaining silent and not expressing genuine remorse for his crimes until then.

The date of December 24, 2022, is etched in the memory of the people of Korba, Chhattisgarh. A young woman was brutally murdered. Sahban Khan, a 30-year-old bus conductor from Ahmedabad, driven by suspicion of his 20-year-old girlfriend’s infidelity, committed a heinous act. He raped her and then inflicted 51 stab wounds to her chest with a screwdriver. The district court has now sentenced the perpetrator to life imprisonment.

Khan had traveled to Jaipur from Ahmedabad. He worked as a conductor for the Chisti Bus Service, which operated between Jaipur and Korba. It was during this time that he met the young woman, who was studying in the Madanpur area and frequently traveled by bus. Their friendship blossomed into a relationship, and Khan even planned to marry her. However, the situation took a dark turn when the woman began communicating with another man. Enraged, Khan repeatedly tried to stop her and even threatened her mother, warning that he would harm both of them if she didn’t stop her daughter.

Khan, consumed by suspicion, plotted the murder. On December 24, 2022, he flew from Ahmedabad to Raipur and then traveled to Korba. After staying at Hotel Salim, he went to his girlfriend’s house. A heated argument ensued, leading Khan to rape her and then repeatedly stab her in the chest with a screwdriver. No one was present in the house at the time of the attack. The woman died at the scene.

Her brother found her body covered in blood and alerted the police. During the investigation, blood-stained shoes, a shirt, earphones, and a condom packet were recovered from the scene. Given the sensitive nature of the case, the police sought assistance from the cyber cell. After approximately one and a half months of investigation, the accused was arrested in Gujarat and brought to Korba. During questioning, Khan confessed to his crime.

The Special Judge of the District Court, Jaideep Garg, found Sahban Khan guilty. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of 75,000 rupees. It was also ordered that he would have to serve an additional 18 months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.

An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan has sentenced 75 leaders and activists from former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party to prison terms ranging from 3 to 10 years. The sentences are…

An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan has sentenced 75 leaders and activists from former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party to prison terms ranging from 3 to 10 years. The sentences are related to their involvement in the attack on a senior PML-N leader’s house during the May 9 riots two years ago. An official associated with the court stated that the Anti-Terrorism Court in Faisalabad handed down 10-year sentences to 59 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party leaders and workers and 3-year sentences to 16 others. The court acquitted 34 individuals in connection with the attack on the residence of Rana Sanaullah, the President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Punjab. Of the 109 defendants, 75 have been convicted.

Key figures among those convicted include former opposition leader in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub; former opposition leader in the Senate, Shibli Faraz; former MP, Zartaj Gul Ahmed Chatha; Ashraf Khan Sohna; Sheikh Rashid Shafiq (nephew of former Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid), and Kanwal Shozab. Previously, these leaders were also sentenced to 10 years each for attacking an ISI building in Faisalabad; these sentences will run concurrently. Former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry and Zain Qureshi, the son of former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, were acquitted in this case. On May 9, 2023, Imran Khan’s supporters engaged in widespread vandalism of military and government buildings, especially in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Imran Khan has been imprisoned for various charges for the past two years, while thousands of his party workers are also behind bars in connection with the May 9 cases. Courts in Punjab have begun sentencing PTI leaders and activists following the Supreme Court’s orders. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has strongly condemned the court’s decision, stating that it is based on fabricated cases and fake witnesses. Zulfi Bukhari, a close aide of Imran, said in a social media post on X that numerous atrocities have been committed against ordinary citizens, families, and the PTI leadership under the guise of May 9. He mentioned the case of Aliima Khan’s son, Shahrez, who was remanded. Bukhari stated that it was a serious failure of justice that the judge refused to even glance at the evidence proving that Shahrez was not in Lahore on May 9. This episode will remain indelibly etched in history, and those responsible will not escape justice.
