In a significant development for regional peace, 37 Naxal operatives have surrendered in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh. This mass surrender, which occurred on Sunday, includes 27 individuals who collectively carried bounties totaling Rs 65 lakh. The operation was facilitated by the ‘Poona Margem’ initiative, designed to encourage rehabilitation and social reintegration of former insurgents.

Senior police and CRPF officers received the surrendered cadres. The group comprised 12 women, demonstrating the initiative’s broad appeal and inclusive strategy. Notable figures among the surrendering Naxals included Kumali alias Anita Mandavi, Geeta alias Laxmi Madkam, Ranjan alias Soma Mandavi, and Bhima alias Jahaj Kalmu. Each of these key individuals was previously associated with an Rs 8 lakh bounty.

The Chhattisgarh government’s rehabilitation policy offers substantial support to those who choose to lay down arms. Surrendering individuals receive an immediate sum of Rs 50,000, along with access to skill development training, agricultural land, and various other resources aimed at fostering their successful reintegration into society. This comprehensive approach is proving effective in dismantling extremist networks.

Authorities view the Bastar Range Police’s ‘Poona Margem’ initiative as a crucial step towards achieving lasting peace, promoting respect for law, and driving development in the Naxal-affected areas. In the last 20 months alone, over 500 Maoists, including 165 with prior bounties, have voluntarily surrendered and returned to mainstream life. These efforts are crucial as the national objective to eradicate Naxalism by March 2026 intensifies.

In a significant development in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, 41 Maoist cadres have laid down their arms. Officials confirmed that 32 of these individuals carried a collective bounty totaling Rs 1.19 crore, highlighting their former positions within the banned organization. This mass surrender occurred on Wednesday, with the cadres opting to rejoin mainstream society.

The surrendered individuals included 12 women and were impressed by the government’s robust surrender and rehabilitation policies. They were also motivated by the ‘Poona Margham’ initiative, a rehabilitation drive specifically designed for reintegration in the Bastar region. Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Yadav stated that these cadres have expressed faith in the Indian Constitution and are seeking a dignified life within democratic frameworks.

Among the 41, a substantial number, 39, were affiliated with the Maoists’ South Sub-Zonal Bureau. Their previous roles spanned critical committees and divisions, including the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee, Telangana State Committee, and the Dhamtari-Gariaband-Nuapada divisions. This indicates a considerable weakening of the organization’s regional leadership.

Details revealed that the surrendered cadres held various positions, from PLGA battalion members and company operatives to area committee members, platoon commanders, and militia members. Nine individuals alone each carried an Rs 8 lakh bounty, with others bearing rewards of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 2 lakh, and Rs 1 lakh, underscoring their seniority. As part of the rehabilitation process, each surrendering cadre received an immediate incentive of Rs 50,000. This event is part of a broader trend, with 790 Maoist cadres having abandoned violence in Bijapur alone since January 2024.

A CRPF Head Constable, Rajesh Kumar (52), stationed in the Naxal-affected Saranda forest of West Singhbhum district, has died in suspicious circumstances while on duty. The incident occurred at the CRPF camp in Chhotanagra, located within the Manoharpur block.

Reports indicate that Head Constable Kumar suddenly collapsed while on duty on Saturday. Fellow jawans quickly transported him to the Manoharpur Community Health Centre. Medical professionals examined him and declared him deceased. While preliminary assessments suggest cardiac arrest as the cause of death, the exact reasons will be confirmed after the post-mortem report is available.

Kumar was originally posted in Musabani, East Singhbhum district, but was currently deployed in the operation to make the Saranda forest Naxal-free. Colleagues described him as a dedicated officer who played an active role during the anti-Naxal operations.

The news of his untimely demise has sent waves of grief through the CRPF ranks. His comrades remember Rajesh Kumar as an honest, disciplined, and conscientious soldier, whose loss will be deeply felt by the battalion for a long time to come.

A courageous Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) head constable, Mahendra Lashkar, of the 60th Battalion has tragically lost his life in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast that occurred in…

A courageous Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) head constable, Mahendra Lashkar, of the 60th Battalion has tragically lost his life in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast that occurred in the dense Saranda forest of West Singhbhum. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and despite all efforts, succumbed to his injuries on Friday night. Head Constable Lashkar hailed from Assam, and his sacrifice has cast a pall of grief over his battalion.

The explosion also injured two other personnel: Inspector Kaushal Kumar Mishra and ASI Ramkrishna Gagrai. Both are currently undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Rourkela. Reports indicate that their conditions are now stable and out of danger. ASI Ramkrishna Gagrai is notably the brother of Kharsawan MLA Dashrath Gagrai. CRPF officials have assured that the injured personnel are receiving the best possible medical care and vowed that Head Constable Lashkar’s sacrifice would not be in vain. Following the incident, security forces have intensified their search operations in the area, pursuing Maoist elements believed to be responsible.

The IED explosion took place around 4 PM on Friday as security forces were conducting a search operation in the Naxal-affected region. The blast occurred due to a pre-planted IED by Maoists. An exchange of fire was also reported in the vicinity after the explosion. This incident is part of a disturbing trend, as the Saranda region has witnessed an increase in IED blasts over the past few months. In August, two CRPF Cobra Battalion personnel were injured in a similar blast, and in March, a sub-inspector died from injuries sustained in an IED attack. In April, a Jharkhand Jaguar jawan was also martyred in an IED explosion.

The banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) has announced a temporary suspension of its armed struggle to facilitate peace talks, but simultaneously requested that the government formally halt security operations…

The banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) has announced a temporary suspension of its armed struggle to facilitate peace talks, but simultaneously requested that the government formally halt security operations for a month. In an alleged statement circulated on social media on Tuesday, the Maoists also appealed to the government to share its decision on this matter through government news media, including the internet and radio.

The Maoist organization offered peace talks with the government. Despite the initiative for talks, the government intensified arrests and actions, and thousands of activists were detained. Crackdowns on the leaders of the movement are also underway.

In May 2025, 28 prominent Maoists, including the general secretary, were captured. The two-page statement, issued on August 15, by the spokesperson of the Maoist Central Committee, Abhay, came nearly four months after the killing of the banned CPI (Maoist) General Secretary Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju in an encounter with security forces in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh on May 21.

Regarding the statement, Deputy Chief Minister of the state Vijay Sharma said that the authenticity of the statement is being investigated, and the best way for the Maoists is to surrender and avail of rehabilitation benefits. Vijay Sharma also holds the Home Department. Sharma said that the term ‘ceasefire’ is highly objectionable because there is no situation like war that would necessitate it. In a democracy, talks cannot be conditional; nevertheless, they have once again laid down preconditions.

He said that after the statement is confirmed, discussions will be held within the government. In the statement, the Maoists said that they had previously proposed a ceasefire to the government and sought a month’s time to consult with the top leadership of the organization. However, unfortunately, the central government did not show a favorable attitude towards this, but rather intensified its activities.

The Maoists said in their alleged statement, “In order to take forward the peace talks process initiated on the initiative of our party’s esteemed General Secretary (Basavaraju, who was killed in the encounter), we are clarifying that, considering the changing world and country conditions, apart from the requests being made by the Prime Minister and Home Minister of the country to senior police officers to leave arms and join the mainstream, we have decided to lay down arms. We have decided to temporarily halt the armed struggle.”

The alleged statement also stated, “We are also ready to exchange ideas with the government on this subject primarily through video calls. Therefore, we are once again clarifying that the government should proceed with the peace talks process by formally declaring a ceasefire for a month and stopping search operations.” The statement also said that it was issued late for several reasons.

Reacting to the statement, Inspector General of Police of the Bastar region, Sundarraj P, said that the police have taken cognizance of a press release issued by the CPI (Maoist) Central Committee regarding the possibility of laying down arms and peace talks. He said that the authenticity of the release is being confirmed, and its contents are being carefully examined. He further added that any decision on talks or contact with the CPI (Maoist) is entirely the government’s, which will be taken after proper consideration and assessment of the situation and circumstances.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police (DGP), Nalin Prabhat, made a landmark visit to the Lolab Valley, a region near the Line of Control (LOC) that has long been affected by terrorism. This visit marked the first time a police chief has toured the area. During his visit, DGP Prabhat assessed ongoing counter-terrorism operations and evaluated the preparedness of the security forces. He interacted with personnel from the JK Police’s SOG and the CRPF at the SOG Camp in Lolab, acknowledging their dedication in challenging circumstances. DGP Prabhat emphasized the necessity of sustained counter-insurgency measures to prevent infiltration and maintain peace in the Kashmir Valley. His presence aimed to raise the morale of local police and send a clear message against terror and violence. Locals welcomed the visit, viewing it as a significant step towards fostering trust and inclusion in the region. Security experts believe this visit will be crucial in reshaping Kashmir’s security strategy, focusing on vigilant oversight and community engagement. Counter-terror operations are currently underway across several districts in the Jammu region, with an emphasis on ground-level intelligence, enhanced surveillance, and the blocking of infiltration routes.
