Substantiate claims on deletion of voter names: EC to Akhilesh Yadav
By PTI
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission has asked Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav to substantiate his allegation against the poll authority of mass deletion of voters from Yadav and Muslim communities from the electoral rolls of every assembly seat during the Uttar Pradesh elections this year.
In a letter to Yadav, the Commission has asked him to submit by November 10 assembly-wise evidence of the wrongful deletions and complaints filed by the Samajwadi Party (SP) with the district and state electoral authorities in this regard.
Addressing a party meeting last month, Yadav had accused the poll panel of “deleting” the names of Muslim and Yadav votes in every assembly constituency.
It is learned that the Commission had told Yadav that it had not received any complaint about the deletion of names of 20,000 voters from the electoral rolls of any constituency.
The Commission also said that its district and state electoral officers had not flagged any such issue of mass deletion of voters’ names from electoral rolls in every assembly constituency.

The poll authority said one Samajwadi Party candidate had complained about deletion of names of 10,000 voters from the electoral rolls in the Aligang assembly constituency.
The Commission said on enquiry, the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh had found the allegations with regard to the Aligang assembly seat to be “baseless, unsubstantiated and factually incorrect”.
Given the legal provisions for preparation of electoral roll and safeguards against wrongful deletions, the SOPs laid by the Commission leave no scope for mass deletion of the names of bonafide electors from the electoral roll.
The Commission said suo-moto deletion of names of voters is “strictly prohibited” during an election year.
It noted that each and every deletion is made after following due procedure of law by giving ample opportunity to the person concerned.

Adityanath govt hid COVID-19 death figures in Uttar Pradesh, says Akhilesh Yadav
By PTI
LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday accused the Uttar Pradesh government of hiding the COVID-19 death figures, and claimed the state government did not want to give the statistics as it did not want to help the people. He also highlighted the issue of teachers dying during panchayat poll duty in the state.
“The government did not give the statistics pertaining to the COVID-19 deaths, nor any help was given to them. They (UP government) did not give the statistics of COVID-19 deaths, as they did not want to help (the people),” he told reporters.
“When the teachers went on (panchayat poll) duty, it was said that only three teachers died (on poll duty due to COVID-19). Later, when organisations and we raised questions, the government had to admit that actually how many lives were lost,” the SP chief said.
A teachers’ body had earlier claimed that over 1,600 teachers and workers of the Basic Education Department have died in Uttar Pradesh since the first week of April due to COVID-19, and said that 90 per cent of them were on panchayat polls duty.
However, Satish Chandra Dwivedi, the UP minister of state (independent charge) for basic education, had said that all these deaths cannot be attributed to election duty and according to government data, only three teachers had died due to COVID-19.
On May 31, the UP Cabinet had approved a financial assistance of Rs 30 lakh for the kin of government personnel who died on duty during the recently-held panchayat election, including those who succumbed to COVID-19 within 30 days of poll duty, a spokesperson said.
The Cabinet had also approved increasing the ex-gratia amount from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 30 lakh.
“The duration of duty as defined by the Election Commission of India was the basis on which the State Election Commission had formed the guidelines, in which the duration of COVID-19 infection and death was not considered.
Hence, for the ex-gratia, death due to COVID-19 within 30 days from election duty has been made the eligibility criteria,” a state government spokesperson had said.

‘Free hand’ to police responsible for poor law & order in UP: Akhilesh Yadav
By PTI
LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday hit out at the Uttar Pradesh government over the alleged poor law and order situation, claiming that a “free hand” given to police is responsible for it.Charging the government with humiliating all sections of society, including the youth, unemployed and political leaders, he said thousands of SP workers have been framed in fake cases. In an apparent reference to the two girls who were found dead in a field in Unnao, Yadav asked, “Who is responsible for it.”
“When the government gives free hand to police, this is bound to happen. In the state where daughters are not safe, mothers are not safe who will invest there. Cases are being reported continuously from Badaun, Hathras and Unnao. A victim woman was cremated in the night in Hathras,” he said.
He also claimed that a large number of custodial deaths and fake encounters have taken place in the state. “Ever since this government came to power, fake encounters have started taking place,” he said.
The SP chief said that the UP government has been continuously making claims on investments but these are not visible on the ground.
“This is the first government which is inaugurating the already inaugurated projects, laying the foundation stones of projects where it was already done and signing MoUs which had already been signed. The government is not telling what new works have been done by them,” Akhilesh said.
Alleging that farming is being ruined, he said, “Though the BJP has been continuously saying that the new farm laws will benefit farmers but farmers of the entire country want them repealed as they are not beneficial for them.”
“The BJP has been continuously saying that they will give MSP to farmers and double their income. And now when it is time to do so, they have brought the laws which have posed problems for agriculture and farmers,” he said, adding that the youth too is facing unemployment.
“They (BJP) have their government at the Centre and also in Uttar Pradesh. Where are they taking the economy? They are showing dreams of investments, if it is coming where it is. No investment is seen in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.
Referring to the rise in petrol and diesel prices, he said its profits are going into the government”s coffers but not being shared with farmers.
To a question, the SP chief said his party will perform well in the upcoming panchayat elections and will have a good show in Assembly polls next year.
