Authorities report that a failure in the steel pipe joint of the water supply system allowed steam, heated to 700 degrees Celsius, to burst forth, incinerating everything in its immediate path. The injured are currently receiving specialized treatment at Fortis Jindal Hospital, Apex Hospital, and Balaji Metro Hospital in Raigarh, where medical teams are working around the clock to stabilize those with severe thermal burns.

The administration has released an official list of the deceased, identifying 20 men who hailed from various states across India, including Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh. This diverse list of victims underscores the heavy reliance on migrant labor in the state’s industrial sector. In response to the outcry, the Vedanta Group has announced a compensation package of 35 lakh INR for the families of the deceased and 15 lakh INR for those injured, along with a commitment to provide employment to one member of each victim’s family. Meanwhile, the local administration has faced criticism for historical negligence regarding safety audits in the numerous plants operating across the district.
