  • Ryan Reynolds opens up about taking a break from moviemaking

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds recently revealed why he decided to take a little sabbatical from moviemaking after wrapping up his upcoming Apple TV+ movie ‘Spirited’.

The actor told The Hollywood Reporter that he wants to take a break from movies in order to spend some time with his family.

“I’m just trying to create a little bit more space for my family [wife Blake Lively and their three daughters] and time with them,” Reynolds told The Hollywood Reporter at the Wall Street Journal Magazine Innovator Awards on Monday in New York City.

“You know, you don’t really get that time back,” he added. The ‘Free Guy’ actor took to his Instagram on October 16 to share that ‘Spirited’ had wrapped.

“Not sure I’d have been ready to say yes to a film this challenging even three years ago. Singing, dancing and playing in the sandbox with Will Ferrell made a whole lotta dreams come true,” he wrote.

Reynolds added, “I’m gonna miss every second working with this obscenely gifted group of creators and artists.”

Just because he won’t be making any movies, however, doesn’t mean he won’t be working on one of the many other notches under his belt. “I’m busy, obviously, with other things at my company,” he said.

Aside from acting, Reynolds also has stakes in Aviation Gin, Mint Mobile, Maximum Effort Marketing and Wrexham AFC.

“Showing up is so important and picking up the phone and having skin in the game. Our philosophy is to bring people together in fun, smart, unexpected ways,” Reynolds previously told The Hollywood Reporter of his many business ventures.

“So, I’ll probably be away from film, or at least shooting films, till the end of the summer,” he said.

“It just provides me an opportunity to be home,” he added.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, who tied the knot in 2012, are proud parents to daughters James, Inez and Betty.

The couple originally met while filming 2011’s ‘Green Lantern’, but they didn’t connect romantically until later — and once went on a double date together with other people.

  • It is rare to get an original script like Free Guy: Ryan Reynolds

    By Express News Service

Ryan Reynolds who recently voiced a character named Guy in The Croods: A New Age, is back, once again, as a character named Guy in Free Guy which is releasing this Friday. While he has played superhero roles like Deadpool and Green Lantern before, in Free Guy, Reynolds plays a non-player character (NPC) in a game. “This is slightly new for me,” says Reynolds. “There’s something really wonderful about playing a character who’s naive and innocent and is like a four-year-old adult. It’s fun to explore everything with new eyes, which is what this character gets to do, and filter that through the prism of comedy, occasional cynicism, and all sorts of other things. I love a playing character who is sort of stepping out of the background into this kind of new, new person.”Excerpts from the conversation:

Free Guy is one of the biggest post-pandemic films to hit the screens. How has the team spirit been?Shawn: It has been a ride, and it has definitely been a longer wait than we expected. But this movie was such a delight to make, and the making was joyous and fun. We are excited to finally get to share a movie that hopefully has that same fun, delight and warmth that we experienced on the sets. Some of these early reactions have been really kind. This cast comes to life in the film that feels in some ways like an antidote to much of what we have been living through. The film is about hopefulness and the preservation of innocence in the midst of a cynical world.

How was this film conceived?Ryan: Shawn and I wanted to team up for a while now, and when I read the script, I sent it to him. The next thing I know, Shawn was in my living room in New York, and we were talking about this world that could be built and how we could make changes to make it relevant. It’s hard to make an original film that isn’t based on some pre-existing IP, a comic book or a sequel in some regard. You get the script to a place that you feel like it’s perfect or it’s great and then you have to make it 30 per cent better somehow because you don’t have any ability to rely on a pre-existing knowledge or fanbase. So, you really have to kind of go out there and prove it the old-fashioned way.

How important was it for you to portray gaming correctly in the film, and how did you go about trying to achieve that?Shawn: This movie was about threading the needle between wanting to represent the gaming world correctly and accurately. I spoke with a lot of game publishers, coders, game designers, and played a lot of games in pre-production. So, getting that right was really important. But it was also important to make a movie that required no gaming fluency.

Ryan: I really don’t think Free Guy is a video game movie. It’s like saying, Titanic is a movie about boatmanship. It’s a movie about so much more but I love the narrow target we had to hit to create a world that felt so authentic to gamers.

The film seems to have a bunch of characters who do random things like running around with a flame-thrower. Ryan, how challenging was it to do the role of an NPC?Ryan:  I have three daughters under six and two of them have a flame-thrower (laughs). So, I am impervious to all of that. I can actually concentrate on just about anything, even when an entire building is on fire (smiles).

The film also seems to talk about themes such as the friendship between Guy and Lil Rel Howery’s Buddy. How did that come about?Ryan: I think Rel and I, and our respective characters live at this intersection of a bit on the page and a bit in the moment. Everybody in the film is adaptive, and good at adding and creating and building three-dimensional characters. Rel and I just immediately, from the moment we met, clicked. It was great to get out there, mess around and play, sort of form that bond and put it up on the big screen.

Is there a sequel on the cards?Shawn: The short answer is yes. I have made things that launched franchises and I have made enough things to know that you just don’t know the outcome. So, we have bandied about and flirted with some ideas. But my favourite thing in Free Guy is that there’s a possibility of making a new film with Taika Waititi’s character Antwan. But if we make Free Guy Two, it will be titled Albuquerque Boiled Turkey (laughs). When you see the film, you will understand the joke.

  • Something wonderful about playing a character who’s ‘naive’: Ryan Reynolds

    By IANS

NEW DELHI: Ryan Reynolds’ upcoming sci-fi comedy film ‘Free Guy’ is all set to release theatrically in India on September 17. The Hollywood star has spoken about his character and said that there is something wonderful about playing a character who’s “naive and innocent”.

Reynolds was asked during a global press conference: “Ryan, as far as heroes go, we kind of know and love you as ‘Deadpool’ in recent years. What has it been like stepping into a very different type of hero, this wholesome, blue shirt guy?”

Known for his great sense of humour, Reynolds replied: “Well, um, you know, my-my-my-my default is just pure trash in, you know, on the inside.”

He added: “So, for this, it’s just slightly new for me. Um, I like, I sort of like that guy is, you know, there’s a movie that I love called ‘Being There’ starring Peter Sellers. And that was, like, the first kind of, uh, uh, foothold I had into this character and this world.”

“And, you know, there’s something really wonderful about playing a character who’s kind of naive and innocent, and really like, and I mean, it’s even said in the movie, he’s, in a sense, he’s kind of like, he’s a four-year-old adult.”

The actor, who is married to actress Blake Lively, had fun exploring.

“I think, really fun about exploring, you know, everything with new eyes, which is what this character gets to do, and sort of filtering that through the prism of, you know, comedy and occasionally cynicism, and all sorts of other things,” he said.

“But it’s, uh, I love a playing character who is sort of stepping out of the background into this kind of new, new person,” the actor added.

Directed by Shawn Levy, ‘Free Guy’ will be released in English and Hindi. It also stars Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi.

TMZ reported that the couple has sent a donation of USD 10,000 to ‘Hope for Haiti’ as a contribution to the country’s quake relief efforts.

Reportedly, Ryan and Blake’s donation will be used to set up “mobile clinics in the communities where there is the most need, as determined by the Ministry of Health.”

In addition, the organisation will use the money “to cover distribution costs to continue to deliver dry food and warm meals — donated by World Central Kitchen — to families in these hard-hit areas in Southern Haiti.”

‘Hope for Haiti’ is awaiting some big shipments of emergency relief funds and medical supplies from the US companies like Amazon and Americares soon.

The number of people killed by the 7.2-magnitude earthquake on August 14 in Haiti has risen to 2,207, with 344 still missing, the country’s civil protection agency reported on Sunday.

The agency said on Twitter that a week after the earthquake, which also left at least 12,268 injured, the number of damaged homes exceeded 77,000, while almost 53,000 were destroyed.

The earthquake had its epicentre some 125 kilometres west of Port-au-Prince and had a depth of 10 kilometres, which is why at the time a tsunami alert was issued but was later cancelled.

  • Ryan Reynolds’ daughters inspired him to discuss mental health struggles

    By ANI
WASHINGTON: Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds recently opened up online about his struggles with anxiety and explained how his three daughters encouraged him to publicly post his message.

According to E! News, earlier, to mark Mental Health Awareness month that went by in May, the ‘Deadpool’ actor had opened up about his own mental health struggles on Instagram in order to “destigmatize talking about it.”

Now, the 44-year-old star has explained how his three daughters James, Inez, and Betty, who he shares with his wife, Blake Lively, encouraged him to post his message in the first place.

Ryan told Entertainment Tonight’s Nischelle Turner on Saturday, “Part of it is that I have three daughters at home and part of my job as a parent is to model behaviors and model what it’s like to be sad and model what it’s like to be anxious, or angry.”

He further added, “That there’s space for all these things. The home that I grew in, that wasn’t modeled for me really. And that’s not to say that my parents were neglectful, but they come from a different generation.”

Furthermore, the Canadian native said that in order to “de-stigmatize things” surrounding mental health, people have to first “create a conversation.”

He explained, “I know that when I felt at the absolute bottom it’s usually been because I felt like I was alone in something I was feeling. So, I think when people talk about it, I don’t necessarily dwell on it or lament on it, but I think it’s important to talk about it. And when you talk about it, it kind of sets other people free.”

At the end of last month, Ryan shared that he struggles with anxiety, “May is almost over. It’s also Mental Health Awareness month. Which brings me to this,” he began his post at the time. “One of the reasons I’m posting this so late is I overschedule myself and important things slip. And one of the reasons I overschedule myself is my lifelong pal, anxiety.”

He continued, “I know I’m not alone and more importantly, to all those like me who overschedule, overthink, overwork, over-worry and over-everything, please know you’re not alone. We don’t talk enough about mental health and don’t do enough to destigmatize talking about it. But, as with this post, better later than never, I hope…”

In 2017, the ‘Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ actor had discussed his anxiety and how his upbringing may have contributed to his mental health struggles.

Ryan, whose father died following a battle with Parkinson’s disease in 2015, told Variety, “I have three older brothers. Our father was tough. He wasn’t easy on anyone. And he wasn’t easy on himself. I think the anxiety might have started there, trying to find ways to control others by trying to control myself. At the time, I never recognized that. I was just a twitchy kid.”

As per E! News, the following year, Ryan also opened up to another news outlet about how working on ‘Deadpool’ helped him cope with his anxiety.

  • Hugh Jackman shares ‘Deadpool’ fan’s ‘career advice’ for Ryan Reynolds

    By PTI
NEW YORK: What happened when an “X-Men” fan had a chance encounter with Hugh Jackman? The admirer, who happened to be a New York City police officer, sent a message to Ryan Reynolds via the Wolverine star to cast Jackman in the third “Deadpool” movie, “even if it’s for a 10-minute cameo”, promising solid box office collections.

    — Hugh Jackman (@RealHughJackman) May 1, 2021

Jackman, who is best known for playing the adamantium-clawed mutant Wolverine/ Logan in the X-Men films of the now Disney-owned Marvel Studios, shared the video of Officer John Dobkowski on his verified Twitter account on Saturday.

“Officer Dobkowski is doling out incredibly smart career advice for @VancityReynolds. Sharing is caring,” Jackman captioned the video on the microblogging site.

In the 34-second-long clip, Dobkowski said, “Hey Ryan, you’ve got to get this guy in ‘Deadpool 3’. Even if it’s for a 10-minute cameo, that would be awesome. That movie would be so cool, so great, it would blow the box office.”

The officer also jokingly threatened to give Reynolds a ticket if Jackman doesn’t show up in the film. Sometimes for comic relief, sometimes for extending support during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Jackman and Reynolds often put on a display of a “feud” on social media.

Jokes apart, Jackman has repeatedly said that he is not interested in returning as Wolverine, a role he played in the X-Men film series from 2000 to 2018, for which he holds the Guinness World Record for the “longest career as a live-action Marvel superhero”.

  • Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Green Lantern’ will not be part of Zack Snyder’s ‘Justice League’

    By ANI
WASHINGTON: Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds has confirmed that his version of the 2011 ‘Green Lantern’ will not appear in the highly-anticipated Zack Snyder’s cut of ‘Justice League’.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, on Monday, DC fans were struck with a blow when they learned that Reynolds will not have a cameo in the upcoming movie.

There had been several rumours swirling that the ending of the new ‘Justice League’ movie would include a major cameo, and people speculated that Reynolds might appear as Hal Jordan, aka Green Lantern, reprising his role from the 2011 film.

Replying to a Twitter user who suggested Reynolds’ Hal Jordan is the big surprise, he said, “It’s not me. But what a cool pirate flag to cameo as Hal. Maybe it’s another GL? But for me, the suit stays in the closet. I mean, computer.”

Reynolds has been a good sport about the whole thing, even wondering if perhaps it is another Green Lantern who might cameo or even another actor as Hal Jordan. Green Lantern has traditionally been one of the founding members of the ‘Justice League’, so it was always odd that he is been mostly absent from the DCEU up to this point.

A new trailer for ‘Justice League’ was released earlier this month, which did feature a new face: Jared Leto, who is reprising his role as The Joker. That moment was, by far, the most talked-about section of the nearly three-minute trailer.

As per Variety, Zack Snyder’s ‘Justice League’ will hit HBO Max on March 18, this year.
