  • Prime Minister Modi interacts with people of different communities in Rome

    ROME: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday interacted with people of different communities, including the Indian diaspora and friends of India from different organisations here in the Italian capital and appreciated the role played by them in strengthening ties between India and Italy.

    Modi, who arrived here earlier in the day at the invitation of his Italian counterpart Mario Draghi, was received by him upon arrival at Palazzo Chigi, the seat of the Council of Ministers, for their first in-person meeting. He was also accorded a guard of honour.

    The prime minister met members of the Indian diaspora in Italy and friends of India from different organisations, including representatives of the Italian Hindu Union, the Italian Congregation for Krishna Consciousness, the Sikh community and institutions involved in the commemoration of Indian soldiers who fought in Italy during the world wars, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla told reporters at a briefing.

    Modi also met Sanskrit scholars during the meeting, he said. The prime minister appreciated the role played by the community members in strengthening ties between India and Italy.

    Earlier, the prime minister paid floral tributes at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Rome during which he was cheered by an enthusiastic group of Indians at the venue, Shringla said.

    “The ideals of the great Bapu reverberate globally,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had tweeted earlier. From Rome, Modi will travel to Glasgow, the UK, at the invitation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

  • Nirmala Sitharaman to attend G-20 joint finance, health ministers meet in Rome

    NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will attend the G-20 joint Finance and Health Ministers meeting in Rome on October 29, which among other things will discuss COVID pandemic prevention and response.

    Finance and health ministers will discuss how to keep momentum on response to pandemic and build on further coordination arrangements between health and finance ministries.

    On October 29, G20 Finance and Health Ministers will gather in Rome for their first joint meeting under the Italian G20 Presidency.

    The meeting will be co-chaired by Daniele Franco, Italian Minister of Economy and Finance and Roberto Speranza, Italian Minister of Health.

    The meeting will be held on the eve of the G20 Leaders’ Summit taking place in Rome on October 30-31, 2021.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ star Indira Varma joins Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series on Disney+

    LOS ANGELES: Indian origin British star Indira Varma, best known for her roles in TV shows “Rome” and “Game of Thrones”, has joined the cast of the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi television series on Disney+.

    Details about Varma’s character are still under wraps, reported Deadline.

    Varma, who has starred in TV shows “Carnival Row”, “Luther”, “Paranoid” and “For Life” and movies such as “Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love” and “Crisis”, will appear in the series alongside Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen, who portrayed Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy.

    The Obi-Wan serie on the streamer is among the number of “Star Wars” shows that are lined up for Disney+ following the success of “The Mandalorian”.

    The third season of “The Mandalorian” will premiere on Disney+ in late 2021.

    The character of Cassian Andor from “Rogue One”, played by Mexican star Diego Luna, is also getting a new series besides the two “Mandalorian” spinoffs and other stories.
