  • 'Ek Century Tera, Ek Century Mera': Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill Hundreds Begin Meme Game On Twitter | cricket news

India captain Rohit Sharma and opening batsman Shubman Gill truck brilliant hundreds in the first innings of the Dharamsala Test to put India in driver's seat. Gill, in the process, surpassed 400 runs in the series while Rohit was just one short of this mark before lunch on the second day of the Test. Both Rohit and Shubman looked in complete control in the morning session, not putting one wrong foot forward.

India were hoping that Rohit and Shubman carried on the good work and aimed for the personal double hundreds as it would have completely pushed England on the back foot but Ben Stokes came in to bowl for the first time and removed the India captain. Off the field, over social media fans began meme game as they reacted on Rohit and Gill bossing around in the middle in Dharamsala.

In what was a strange moment in the game, Stokes decided to roll his arms finally in the series and struck gold. He bowled a peach, getting some help by the crack on the surface, and got the ball the move just slightly away to hit the top of off and Rohit could not do anything about it but smile all the way to the dressing room an even the English players were shocked by the development.

Earlier, Kuldeep Yadav and R Ashwin had shone with the ball to bowl out England for just 218 after Stokes won the toss and opted to bat first. Kuldeep completed an impressive five-wicket haul while Ashwin got four wickets. Ravindra Jadeja got one wicket as pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj went wicketless at the end of the England's first innings.

India have an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. England are playing to restore their pride and prove that they are not as bad a side as the scoreline looks like. India, on the other hand, are now playing for more points that strengthens their position in the World Tets Championship Points Table.

  • India vs England 5th Test: 'There Was Guy Called Rishabh Pant,' Rohit Sharma Takes Witty Dig At Ben Duckett's Baseball Comment For Yashasvi Jaiswal | cricket news

India's captain, Rohit Sharma, faced the press confidently ahead of the 5th Test against England in Dharamsala. When questioned about England batsman Ben Duckett's remarks regarding the credit for Yashasvi Jaiswal's aggressive batting, Rohit responded assertively. He reminded everyone, with a touch of humor, of Rishabh Pant's explosive batting prowess. Rohit suggested that perhaps the England team, particularly Ben Duckett, had not witnessed Pant's batting displays, leading to such comments. In his response, Rohit skillfully delivered a message while maintaining a light-hearted tone, emphasizing India's strength in batting, particularly Pant's aggressive style.

“There was a guy called Rishabh Pant in our team, probably Ben Duckett hasn't seen him play,” Rohit said when asked about the comment made by the England batsman. (IND vs ENG 5th Test: Rohit Sharma Makes Big Statement On Playing 11 As Rajat Patidar Is Likely To Play In Dharamsala)

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been India's standout performer in the series, amassing 655 runs in four matches with an impressive average of 94.57 and a strike-rate of 78.63. During the Rajkot Test, his boundary-laden innings caught the attention of England's Ben Duckett, who attributed Jaiswal's aggressive approach to the influence of England's 'Bazball' style of play.

“When you see players from the opposition playing like that, it almost feels like we should take some credit that they're playing differently than how other people play Test cricket,” Duckett had said.

No praise is enough for Ravichandran Ashwin, said captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday, praising the off-spinner ahead of his 100th Test as a “rare” talent critical for the team's success. The fifth and final Test against England, starting on Thursday, is inconsequential to the final outcome of the series as India have already taken an unbeaten 3-1 lead. But it has become significant due to the 100-Test milestone set to be achieved by Ashwin and England batsman Jonny Bairstow.

“(It's a) big achievement for any player to play 100 Tests. It is a big milestone. He has been a match winner for us. What he has done for us, no praise is enough,” Rohit said on the eve of the match.

“His performances over the last five-seven years, every series he has contributed. It is rare to have players like him,” he added.

“I want to congratulate him for his 100 test landmark, of course to get near it as the toss hasn't happened. It feels good to reap rewards of your hard work,” the skipper said.

They have been national teammates for close to a decade and half but it was more than 20 years back when a then precocious Mumbai off-spinner Rohit was pitted against talented opener Ashwin in Vijay Merchant (U-16) and Cooch Behar Trophy (U- 19).

“As a captain, I have seen him since U-19, U-17 days. He batted at that time, was an opener and then he started bowling. And I used to bowl (off-spin) and then became a batsman, so it became up and down for us but it has been good for Indian cricket.”

Ashwin, the “cricket scientist”, has evolved a lot in these 14 years, feels Rohit.

“As a cricketer, he (Ashwin) has evolved in his game and he has a lot of intelligence and if you get a player like this in the team then you don't have to think too much. If you give the ball to him , then he drives the game. How to bowl, what field to set and what to do, I am talking about the planning during the game.”

The Indian skipper also spoke about how process-driven R Ashwin is.

“What you see on the field is the result of a lot of off-field stuff and the work done on one's bowling. I have often seen him bowling with just one stump before a match — one hour 45 minutes before a game. Bowling at one stump a day before a Test. This is cricket's basics. I have seen him bowl regularly at one stump and this has been a process for him. And the biggest thing is that he is a big team player and we saw that in Rajkot Test, when it was a difficult situation for him, but he called and said 'I want to come back and do something for the team'. You see this rarely, and when you have players like this, then your head is held high. ”

Ashwin, who recently became only the second Indian after Anil Kumble to cross 500 wickets in the game's longest format, made his Test debut in 2011 and has enjoyed more highs than lows during a 13-year journey.

  • India Vs England 5th Test Playing 11s: Will KL Rahul And Jasprit Bumrah Return For Dharamsala Test? What We Know So Far | cricket news

India’s wicketkeeper and batsman KL Rahul played just one Test before he was ruled out of the second due to an issue in his quadriceps. He was rested in Visakhapatnam but even after a long gap before the Rajkot game, Rahul was only at 90 percent fitness and BCCI didn’t risk including him in the squad. He has not attained full fitness yet and also missed the Ranchi Test. As per a new report on Cricbuzz, Rahul’s participation in Dharamsala is still unclear as the batsman has flown to London for an expert opinion on his injury.

Rahul is still feeling pain in his right quadriceps for which he had undergone a surgery in London. He made his comeback in Asia Cup 2023 after which he successfully played in the ODI World Cup and in South Africa. But the pain is back and BCCI as well as National Croquet Academy (NCA) don’t want to take any risks with him as the cricketer is of utmost importance to them.

With India already 3-1 up in the series, BCCI might not want to take any risk with a 90 percent fit Rahul. It has also been reported that one more batter and one bowler might be rested in Dharamsala as BCCI looks to manage workload of players.

The good news for Jasprit Bumrah fans is that he is likely to return for the Dharamshala Test. This is the ground which offers assistance to the Pacers and for the first time in the series we might get to see three paces in both the playing 11s.

Coming back to Rahul, he also leads Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The fact that he is very close to regaining full fitness means Rahul is certain to play IPL 2024. Even if he misses the first few games, he should be able to get back to LSG midway through the season.

As far as England are concerned, they are unlikely to make massive changes to the playing 11 knowing they would want to finish the series on a high note, going back with a 3-2 scoreline rather than 4-1. One change that may want to make is including Dan Lawrence in place of Jonny Bairstow. Lawrence has been warming the bench so far and with Bairstow in such a poor form, Lawrence can be tried at the No 5 slot. Knowing fast-paced nature of Dharamsala pitch, we might also see three pacers also in England XI in the form of James Anderson, Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson. As per report, England and India are set to fly to Dharamsala on March 2.

India’s playing 11 for 5th Test Vs England may look like this: Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal (Devdutt Padikkal), Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Axar Patel/Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj

England probable playing 11: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow/Dan Lawrence, Ben Stokes, Ben Foakes, Tom Hartley, James Anderson, Mark Wood, Ollie Robinson

  • ‘Oye Bhai, Hero Nahi Banne Ka,’ Rohit Sharma Wins Hearts After Warning Sarfaraz Khan For Not Wearing Protective Gear – WATCH | cricket news

Rohit Sharma exhibited his animated side during India’s pursuit of England’s final two wickets on Day 3 of the Ranchi Test. With victory in sight and the series glory within reach, Rohit orchestrated tactical maneuvers, deploying spinners Kuldeep Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja from both ends. In a crucial moment, Rohit directed fielder Sarfaraz Khan to shift his position from long on to silly mid-off. While Khan promptly complied with his captain’s instructions, he also opted to take a bold risk in the process.

The incident unfolded in the 47th over when Kuldeep Yadav was momentarily delayed from bowling the fourth ball. This delay ensued as Sarfaraz Khan opted to field in the close-in position without wearing a helmet. As he attempted to persuade his captain, Rohit Sharma intervened, cautioning him about the seriousness of his decision and highlighting the potential dangers involved. Rohit Sharma Reaches 4,000 Test Runs

India skipper Rohit Sharma completed his 4000 Test runs during the second innings of the fourth Test against England at JSCA International Stadium Complex on Sunday as he came out to bat during the 192-run chase.

In the first innings, Rohit could not score much and was dismissed for just two while in the second innings, he is unbeaten at 24*.

Rohit has not been able to capitalize on the starts that he has got in the series so far. In the four matches so far he has scored 266 runs at an average of 38 and at a strike rate of 65.35 with one century (131 in Rajkot).

In 58 Tests, Rohit has scored 4,003 runs at an average of 44.97, with the best score of 212. He has smashed 11 centuries and 16 fifties in 100 innings. In their second innings, England was bundled out for just 145 runs, with Zak Crawley (60 in 91 balls, with seven fours) and Jonny Bairstow (30 in 42 balls, with three fours) offering some fight. Spinners took all the 10 wickets for India, with Ravichandran Ashwin (5/51) and Kuldeep Yadav (4/22) leading the bowlers. England led by 191 runs and set India a target of 192 runs to take the series win by 3-1.

Earlier, India was bundled out for 307 in their first innings in reply to England’s first innings total of 353. Despite Yashasvi Jaiswal (73 in 117 balls, with eight fours and a six) firing once again, India was left struggling at 219/7. . It was wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel (90 in 149 balls, with six fours and four sixes) who joined forces with Kuldeep (28 in 131 balls) to stitch a 76 run stand for the eighth wicket and India managed to score above 300 runs. Spinner Shoaib Bashir troubled Indian batsmen and took a five-wicket haul (5/119). Tom Hartley (3/68) and James Anderson (2/48) were also great with the ball.

England chose to bat first and put up 353 runs in their first innings, driven by a comeback century by their premier batter Joe Root (122* in 274 balls, 10 fours), a half-century from Ollie Robinson (58 in 96 balls, with nine fours and a six) and Ben Foakes (47 in 126 balls, with four boundaries and a six). Ravindra Jadeja (4/67) and Akash Deep (3/83) were the top bowlers for India. (With ANI inputs)

  • Dear Ben Duckett, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Fiery Double-Hundred Is Not Baseball-Inspired; Here’s Proof | cricket news

Dear Ben Duckett, I hope this letter finds you well. First of all, commiserations on the loss in the third Test vs India in Rajkot. You were exceptional in the first innings where you constructed a superb 153 off 151 balls. That was one electrifying innings of yours where you dominated from Ball number one. Even Jasprit Bumrah could not stop you. The authority with which you batted reflected the true nature of the current style of cricket England have adopted in the Tests. Bazball, which you and the English media likes to call it.

We, outside of England, have no problem with it. You guys have created a style of cricket that is rarely seen in a team for such a long time. And honestly, congratulations for that.

Test cricket has seen players like Virender Sehwag, Adam Gilchrist, Kevin Pietersen, and most recently Rishabh Pant play with a sense of urgency and clarity in their head. But for a team to collectively play the same style is probably the first time. And I must admit that while this brand of cricket is attached with huge risks, like we saw in the 2nd innings in Rajkot, continuing to take these risks shows your courage.

Having said that, your comments after Day 3 didn’t land well in India and elsewhere, including your own country. While no one is denying that Bazball has actually created a storm, to take undue credit for any aggressive display of batting by the opponents does not look great on English cricket.

While you rightly called Yashasvi ‘a superstar in the making’ after his 100 in the second innings, you were completely wrong when you said, “When you see players from the opposition playing like that, it almost feels like we should take some credit that they’re playing differently than how other people play Test cricket.”

Do you know the strike rate of Yashasvi before this England series began? I am assuming the answer is a ‘No’. So here’s a quick look: Jaiswal had batted with a strike rate of 75 thrice in the seven innings before the home series vs you all. Two of these innings were played with strike rate of over 120.

Yashaswi’s first-class average and Test strike rate is nearing 70. The point is this: while Yashasvi showed great urgency and was helped by a lucid track to score runs freely, also thanks to some poor bowling by England, if tomorrow the situation arises where he needs to dig in the whole day to save a Test match, he will do that. This is playing for a draw or time. This, I’m pretty sure, you guys don’t associate with Bazball.

Many of former English cricketers like Nick Knight, Michael Vaughan feel that while Bazball is exciting, one must admit that England have got carried away by the name, at times. Remember that despite Bazball, you have not really won anything substantial except maybe the series in Pakistan. Remember the Ashes? When you guys could have beaten Aussies at home?

England lost the last 18 wickets for 234 inside 75 overs .. a warning sign to them in tough conditions against a good side that if you give them a sniff things can escalate very quickly .. India have been brilliant this last 2 days .. # INDvENG — Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) February 18, 2024

Even when this England team have lost in the last 2 years you have always been able to take positives .. or they haven’t been hammered .. this is looking like a wake up call that surely sends a message you can’t just play one way against quality teams .. #INDvENG — Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) February 18, 2024

Here’s what Vaughan said on your team’s performance after the Rajkot Test: “Even when this England team have lost in the last 2 years you have always been able to take positives .. or they haven’t been hammered … this is looking like a wakeup call that surely sends a message you can’t just play one way against quality teams.”

Vaughan also reminded you that just because you have started playing attacking cricket from the last two years, it does not mean that the world was not playing this style ever before. “Duckett also reckons they deserve credit for the way Yashasvi Jaiswal is batting, as if no player in history has ever played an attacking shot. They talk about not playing for the draw, but to me that’s disrespectful to Test cricket. The draw is a Crucial part of the game, and in the five-Test contest has often provided the bedrock of some great series victories,” Vaughan said.

Former England cricketer Nick Knight had warned you guys of not playing an ‘extreme’ version of ‘Bazball’ before the series, underlining the setback England faced in the last Ashes. Knight wrote in his Dafa News column, “I am sure Indian fans are curious to see ‘Bazball’. I think they have watched England play this brand of cricket and are familiar with it. I think in the Ashes summer, the England team played extreme Bazball but now they must play a more refined Bazball to be effective. A refined ‘Bazball’ is to find the right moment to express yourself and put the opposition under extreme pressure. There were a couple of times in the Ashes series where they got the focus wrong. If they learn from that experience and find the right moment to fire, they can benefit from it. Perhaps when the condition suits England, you will see them attack the India bowlers. That will make for a great watch.”

I know that any style of cricket is brutally criticized after a loss. But the crux of this open letter to you is to send a reminder that England are not ‘inspiring’ the world yet to play a certain style of cricket. Every team has its own DNA and it would not change overnight. Various factors like changes in domestic cricket, nature of pitches, board’s word have a role to play on how a team plays on the ground.

So, while England are free to play Bazball and hopefully they reach the top playing it and dominate the world cricket too. But one must admit that baseball is still a work in progress. If you guys, go on to win a World Test Championship one day and two to three teams decide to fully adopt Bazball, then you can take this credit. For now, we are happy playing Jais-Ball.

    Thanks and regards,

    A cricket enthusiast.

    About the pitch in Rajkot

If the numbers of the two Tests which have been played here are to go by, one gets a clue that this is a batting surface. A kind of pitch that will suit India more. Remember that India are befitted more when they play on pitches that support batters for first two days and then begin to deteriorate to assist the spinners. Rank turners, on the other hand, are only going to bring England more and more into the match.

The SCA stadium surface will have runs and for the first time in the series, we might big scores of 500 and 600 runs being achieved in an innings. The pitch will definitely have spice for the spinners and pacers will also enjoy bowling here, but only after the pitch has been used for two days. Teams winning the toss would love to bat first here as chasing in the fourth innings could turn out to be tricky.

There were moments when Rohit would also lose his cool. A video has gone viral earlier in which he is abusing some fielders for being lazy and ‘walking in the garden’. Rohit does not like to hide his emotions on the field and is not bothered about what others think unless his players are getting his message and are not hurt.

During the fourth innings of the match in which England were chasing a mammoth target of 399 runs, Rohit was captured yelling at his fielders on camera. ‘Screaming and shouting made everyone lose my mind’, said Rohit to his players.

At the end of the day, Rohit is quite happy to see that India are winners and that series is level now. The next test is too far. It is to be played in Rajkot from February 15. The Indian team is likely to get a long break while England are also off to Abh Dhabi to play some golf.

Rohit mentioned that Bumrah is a champion player for their team and emphasized the importance of considering the overall performance after winning a game like that. He expressed satisfaction with their batting performance, acknowledging the difficulty of winning a Test in such conditions. Rohit hoped for his bowlers to step up, which they did. He commented on Bumrah’s understanding of his game and suggested there’s still a long way to go for him, indicating he has a lot to offer the team and expressing a desire for him to remain humble.

Regarding the pitch, Rohit noted it was good for batting but highlighted that many batters couldn’t convert their starts into big scores, attributing this to their relative youth and inexperience. He emphasized the importance of building confidence in the young players and expressed pride in the squad’s performance against a strong team, despite their relative lack of experience in this format.

Acknowledging England’s recent strong performance in cricket, Rohit recognized the challenge of the upcoming series and emphasized the need to maintain focus and execute their plans effectively. He mentioned there are still three more matches to go and emphasized the importance of continuous improvement and playing without pressure.

In all likelihood, if either of Sarfaraz or Patidar are to play, they will come in at the cost of Gill, whose hards hands are not helping him tackling the spin bowling. Visakhapatnam is expected to be a rank turner and Shreyas Iyer is a quality player of spin bowling. The management might want Iyer to bat a little up at No 3 and put either of Sarfaraz or Patidar at No 4. Washington Sundar could be placed in Jadeja’s place while KS Bharat may retain his place as playing Dhruv Jurel could prove to be too much of a risk.

As far as England are concerned, their head coach Brendon McCullum had said that they are ready to play an all-spin bowling attack if the pitch at Vizag turns out to be a turner. They will not hesitate in dropping their only pacer in the first Test Mark Wood to make way for off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, who could make his debut in 2nd Test.

England Probable Playing 11s: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Ben Foakes (wk), Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley, Mark Wood/Shoaib Bashir, Jack Leach

India’s young batting sensation Shubman Gill was given the Polly Umrigar award for best men’s cricketer of the year 2022-23 at the BCCI awards on Tuesday (January 23). Gill had a stellar year in all three formats scoring a remarkable figure of 1,583 runs in ODI cricket with an average of 63.36 and strike-rate of 105.45. Arguably, Gill is on the right track as last year he became the fastest to reach 2,000 ODI runs which he did in just 38 innings during a World Cup match against the Netherlands.

Gill and Harsha Bhogle had a quick chat after the young batsman was handed the award by BCCI secretary Jay Shah in which they discussed batting at number 3 which was Virat Kohli’s position for almost a long period of time and fielding at short-leg. Gill make a cheeky request to captain Rohit Sharma when Harsha Bhogle told him that as he gets senior he will be moved from that position.

Playing for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, Gill maintained his impressive form. With three hundreds among his 890 runs, the second-highest total in an IPL season, he was awarded the Orange Cap. Notable was his performance in the Qualifier 2 match, where he hit the greatest individual score in IPL playoff history with 129 runs.

Former India cricketers Ravi Shastri and Farokh Engineer were awarded the prestigious Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award on Tuesday during the Naman Awards.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Roger Binny and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah presented the award to Shastri and Farokh. In Shastri’s international cricket career which panned from 1981 to 1992, Shastri served as a highly useful all-rounder, capable of playing any role for his team and grinding it out in tough situations. He often played as an opener or in the middle order while batting and could deliver some crucial overs of left-arm spin too.

Shastri had a solid Test record. In 80 Test matches, he scored 3,830 runs at an average of 35.79. He scored 11 centuries and 12 fifties in 121 innings of his career, with the best individual score of 206. The all-rounder has also taken 151 wickets, with best bowling figures of 5/75.

Shastri is part of the team which won the 50-over Cricket World Cup in 1983. In the tournament, he scored 40 runs in five innings, with the best score of 17 and took a total of four wickets, with the best bowling spell of 3/26.

Another career-defining moment came for Shastri in 1985 when he played a big role in his team’s win at the World Championship of Cricket, defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final.

Shastri won the ‘Man of the Tournament’ award for scoring 182 runs in five matches at an average of 45.50, with three fifties. He also took eight wickets, finishing as the joint-third-highest wicket-taker. (MS Dhoni Did Not Attend Ram Temple Inauguration, Wife Sakshi Shares Pic Of ‘Ram Lalla’ On Insta; Check Here)

After the conclusion of his international cricket career in 1992, he was heard as a commentator. His authoritative voice, enthusiasm and knowledge of the game make him one of the country’s most beloved commentators. His calls during India’s winning moments in T20 World Cup 2007 and ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 still live in the minds of millions.

On the other hand, Farokh was well known for his craftmanship with the bat and agility behind the stumps. His skillset made him best suited for keeping to the legendary spin quartet of Bedi, Prasanna, Chandrasekhar and Venkataraghavan.

Farokh during his career played 46 Test matches for India and amassed 2611 runs which included two centuries and 16 half-centuries.

His most memorable moment as a batsman was against West Indies at Madras in 1966–67. He scored 94 before lunch on the first day against the iconic pacers Wes Hall, Charles Griffith, Gary Sobers and spinner Richard Gibbs. The list of award winners includes Lala Amarnath, Syed Mushtaq Ali, Vijay Hazare, Bishan Singh Bedi, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and many more. (With ANI inputs)
