During the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Bangladesh’s interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus voiced concerns over the ongoing situation in Gaza, describing it as a ‘genocide.’ He urged the international community to take action, warning of the potential consequences of inaction. Additionally, Yunus addressed the protracted crisis in Myanmar, emphasizing the continued persecution of the Rohingya and advocating for a political settlement to ensure their integration with equal rights. His address was met with protests outside the UN headquarters by supporters of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, reflecting the existing political tensions within Bangladesh and raising questions about human rights and minority issues. Yunus also discussed Bangladesh’s economic progress, particularly highlighting the contributions of migrant workers.

Bangladesh currently hosts a significant number of Rohingya refugees, a population that has been the subject of international attention and assistance. The country has taken in a substantial number of Rohingya, primarily fleeing violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. In response to this humanitarian crisis, the international community, including the Netherlands, has stepped in to provide financial aid. The Netherlands announced a contribution of over 500,000 Euros to support the UNHCR’s efforts in providing protection and humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. The UN has also been involved, with key figures visiting refugee camps and pledging support to Bangladesh. However, despite the aid, Bangladesh’s government officials state that the funds are insufficient. Rohingya refugees have also sought refuge in India, facing varying circumstances and recent campaigns. The Rohingya community is often described as one of the most persecuted groups in the world.

Eight years have passed since the violence and forced displacement of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar began. The Tatmadaw (Myanmar’s armed forces) were responsible for the persecution and killings of Rohingya people in 2017-18, leading to the exodus of millions of Rohingya to Bangladesh and India in search of safety.

The Rohingya have been declared the world’s most persecuted community by the United Nations. Approximately 1.3 million Rohingya refugees reside in Bangladesh, living in various refugee camps. Thousands of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar commemorated the eighth anniversary of their mass exodus and demanded a safe return to their former homes in Rakhine State. The conference is addressing the rights and the need for justice for the Rohingya people.

Reports indicate that from November 2023 to the present, 1.5 million Rohingya have entered Bangladesh. Consequently, the number of Rohingya seeking refuge in Bangladesh has reached at least 1.324 million. An additional 25,000 to 30,000 Rohingya are attempting to cross the border into Bangladesh. Furthermore, 30,000 children are born in the camps each year.
