Ten lives were cut short in Katihar after a bus driver’s alleged intoxication led to a massive pile-up on NH-31. The accident, which took place near Datpur Musahari Chowk, involved a bus, a pickup van, and two motorcycles. Local authorities have confirmed 10 fatalities, including four people who were traveling on bikes at the time of the collision.

Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene, stating that the bus was being driven erratically long before the fatal crash. The driver seemed completely out of control, hitting other objects on the road before the final collision. The direct hit with the pickup van was so forceful that it caused immediate deaths and left over 25 passengers with varying degrees of injuries.

Emergency services and local villagers worked together to pull victims from the wreckage. The atmosphere in the Korha police station area remains somber as families gather at the hospital. Police officials have stated that the primary cause of the accident appears to be the driver’s state of inebriation and high speed. Efforts are now focused on providing medical care to the survivors, many of whom are in a precarious state.

Heartbreaking scenes unfolded in West Champaran, Bihar, as a motorcycle carrying three villagers crashed into a truck Thursday night, resulting in all three fatalities. The two teenagers among the victims highlight the perilous state of rural roadways, where poor lighting and reckless parking claim young lives.

Police detailed the crash near Bagahi’s Nath Baba Chowk at approximately 11:50 PM. The group was heading home from a local mela when their bike veered into a truck standing dark and unlit on a constricted road section. Two perished instantly from the violent collision; the survivor fought briefly in Bettiah hospitals before succumbing.

Identified as 18-year-old Alok Raj, 15-year-old Roshan Kumar, and 20-year-old Vikas Kumar from Ghuspura’s Ward 6, the young men’s deaths have left their families shattered. Villagers mobbed the site in panic, but officers from Bairia station quickly took charge, arranging post-mortems and launching a probe.

The community is rife with grief and anger, calling for rigorous penalties against drivers who park heavy vehicles hazardously. ‘No lights, no safety,’ lamented a relative, pointing to negligence as the root cause.

Compounding the sorrow, JD(U) MLA Vibha Devi’s younger son Akhilesh Kumar died in a Nawada car accident hours earlier. His speeding vehicle smashed into a tree in Musafarpur, and despite transfer to Patna, he couldn’t be saved.

Bihar’s roads continue to be death traps, with recent stats showing a spike in nighttime crashes. Experts advocate for illuminated signage, regular patrols, and awareness drives to curb such incidents. As the bereaved mourn, the state grapples with how to safeguard its youth from these preventable perils.

Traffic woes in Bihar’s key urban centers are on the verge of ending as Adaptive AI-powered smart cameras prepare to transform roadways in Patna, Biharsharif, Bhagalpur, and Muzaffarpur. Drawing from…

Traffic woes in Bihar’s key urban centers are on the verge of ending as Adaptive AI-powered smart cameras prepare to transform roadways in Patna, Biharsharif, Bhagalpur, and Muzaffarpur. Drawing from proven models in tech-savvy cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, this technology promises self-regulating signals that respond instantly to traffic pressures.

The state police have submitted the plan to transport officials, with tenders to follow approval. These cameras represent a fusion of AI and urban planning, designed to tackle Bihar’s growing congestion crisis head-on.

At their core, the systems scan live data to tweak signal timings: more vehicles on one side mean longer greens, while quieter lanes get quicker cycles. Expect fewer gridlocks and faster journeys across major junctions.

Enforcement gets a high-tech upgrade too, with automated e-challans for 14 violations including no helmets, ignored seatbelts, distracted driving on phones, overloading bikes, reverse direction travel, and signal breaches. The dual goal? Slash accidents by 25% and double fine collections for better road funding.

Bhagalpur leads with installations eyed at high-traffic nodes: Zero Mile, Tilka Manjhi, Manali, Adampur, Kachahari, Khalifa Bagh, Station, Tatarpur, and Nathnagar roundabouts. Daily commuters stuck in endless queues will finally breathe easy.

Fuel savings, time efficiency, stricter rule adherence, and fewer crashes are on the horizon. Aligning perfectly with national smart city goals, this move positions Bihar as a forward-thinking leader in traffic innovation, delivering safer, swifter roads for all.

Bihar’s legislative assembly buzzed with urgency on Thursday as lawmakers demanded an end to the menace of high-decibel DJ systems mounted on vehicles. Transport Minister Shravana Kumar responded decisively, pledging a major enforcement drive within 15 days to dismantle illegal operations.

The spark came from Independent Legislative Council member Vanshidhar Brijwasi, who grilled the government on why DJ production thrives unchecked even as their use is banned. He detailed how commercial vehicles are brazenly altered into mobile sound trucks, hiding number plates and flouting rules, especially during wedding seasons when enforcement vanishes, leading to fatalities.

Fellow MLC Veerendra Narayan Yadav backed the query, framing it as a public health and safety crisis driven by noise pollution. Kumar acknowledged the widespread concerns raised by multiple members and committed to a comprehensive statewide inspection of modified vehicles lacking permits.

Highlighting recent road safety discussions, the minister stressed strict adherence to department regulations. ‘We will shut down every unauthorized DJ setup and curb noise violations,’ he stated. The session concluded with RJD’s Abdul Bari Siddiqui pushing for a total prohibition on DJs at social events. As Bihar gears up for this crackdown, residents hope for relief from the eardrum-shattering noise and perilous driving distractions that have plagued the state for years.

Bihar’s roads have turned into death traps, claiming over 50,000 lives in just seven years, as disclosed in the state Legislative Council on Monday. The session exposed deep flaws in road safety, with injuries numbering in the tens of thousands.

Triggering the discussion, MLC Maheshwar Singh spotlighted Motihari’s 393 fatalities in 2025, pressing the government on preventive steps. Minister Dilip Jaiswal laid bare NCRB figures: 50,941 deaths and around 44,000 injuries from 2019-2026, half of them prime-age youth between 18-35.

Admitting the problem’s scale, Jaiswal revealed 1,044 black spots across Bihar, now under targeted fixes. Plans include widespread awareness drives, enhanced signage, and more pedestrian crossings to mitigate risks.

Spotlight also fell on Atal Path, branded by opposition as potentially India’s most unsafe highway. MLC Samir Kumar Singh described routine screams signaling crashes, criticizing absent speed enforcement. The minister countered that foot overbridges exist but see only 5-10 daily users per CCTV data, blaming non-compliance over design flaws.

With service roads, signboards, and standard-compliant construction in place, the core issue remains human negligence. Bihar’s leadership now faces mounting pressure to transform policy into action, preventing further carnage on its accident-prone arteries.

Khagaria, Bihar witnessed a black day on Monday as three horrific road accidents claimed five lives, including a minor. All victims were motorcyclists crushed by high-speed vehicles, igniting public anger and highway blockades.

Tragedy began at Kumhar Chakki when a truck smashed into a magic van ferrying devotees. Dhiraj Kumar (30) and Sanjiv Kumar (28), Begusarai residents heading to Katyanani Temple, died instantly.

Furious villagers jammed NH-31 at Kumhar Chakki and Chaida points, halting traffic for an hour amid long vehicle queues. Cops pacified the crowd with probes promises.

In the second crash near Chaida Durga Temple, a Scorpio SUV hurled into a bike carrying Shivam Kumar (16) and Golu Kumar (18) from Mansi, returning from market. Both perished at the scene.

The fatal spree ended near Sapaha with truck driver mowing down Amrish Singh (30).

Grieving kin wail as investigations kick off. Three FIRs filed at Muffassil and Maheshkhunta stations target negligent drivers.

This cluster of fatalities underscores Bihar’s road safety crisis. Overspeeding remains rampant despite repeated warnings. Urgent calls grow for speed cameras, awareness drives, and helmet mandates to stem the bloodbath on these deadly stretches.
