  • Director Rian Johnson unhappy with his film’s title

Director Rian Johnson revealed that he is not too pleased with the title of his recent outing Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

According to Variety, Johnson expressed frustration over having to add A Knives Out Mystery to the film’s title for marketing purposes. “I’ve tried hard to make them self-contained,” Johnson said about his Knives Out films, the only overlap between the 2019 original and its 2022 sequel being Daniel Craig’s detective character.

“Honestly, I’m pissed off that we have A Knives Out Mystery in the title. You know? I want it to just be called Glass Onion”, he said to Variety. “I get it, and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is it’s a new novel off the shelf every time. But there’s a gravity of a thousand suns toward serialised storytelling.” Johnson added.

As per Variety, Glass Onion, which has been at the top of Netflix’s daily most-watched chart since its streaming debut, features an entirely new mystery and an ensemble of suspects, including Dave Bautista, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson and Edward Norton, among others.

Johnson said that he loves endings so much that he didn’t want the Knives Out name to live on after the end of the 2019 original, which nabbed Johnson an Oscar nomination for original screenplay. Meanwhile, Variety noted that Johnson and Craig have already signed a deal to develop a third Knives Out film for Netflix.

  • ‘Knives Out 2’ title revealed: Rian Johnson calls it ‘Glass Onion’

LOS ANGELES: Filmmaker Rian Johnson has announced that the upcoming “Knives Out” sequel is titled “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and will be released “this holiday season”.

The much-anticipated part two of the hit 2019 murder mystery will see Daniel Craig reprise his role of the master sleuth Benoit Blanc.

Ethan Hawke, Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Kate Hudson, Madelyn Cline and Jessica Henwick are the new cast members.

Johnson announced the film’s title in a series of tweets praising iconic murder mystery writer Agatha Christie, best known for her novels featuring iconic fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.

“Something I love about Agatha Christie is how she never tread water creatively. I think there’s a misperception that her books use the same formula over and over, but fans know the opposite is true.

“It wasn’t just settings or murder methods, she was constantly stretching the genre conceptually. Under the umbrella of the whodunnit she wrote spy thrillers, proto-slasher horrors, serial killer hunts, gothic romances, psychological character studies, glam travelogues,” the director, also known for 2017’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”, wrote on Monday night.

Working on the “Knives Out” series, he said, he was most excited about the prospect of making more mysteries with Craig as Benoit Blanc.

” …to emulate Christie and have every film be like a whole new book, with its own tone, ambition, reason for being and (ta dah) title,” he tweeted as he shared the name announcement clip.

In the sequel, set to premiere “this holiday season”, Benoit Blanc travels to Greece to solve of a mystery involving a new set of suspects.

Johnson wrote the script, has directed and is also producing with Ram Bergman under their T-Street banner. It is unclear if the film will premiere on the streamer at the same time as its theatrical release.

The original “Knives Out”, which was made on a budget of USD 40 million, grossed USD 311.5 million at the global box office when it released in 2019 via Lionsgate.

The sequel was announced in February 2020 and Netflix bought the rights to two sequels for over USD 450 million last March.
