Foot-tapping music marked the beginning of the ceremony with the arrival of President Droupadi Murmu. She was welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Prime Minister Modi got drenched as he moved around outside the sheltered area, waving at the audience after the ceremony was over.

The Air Force’s band played “Aprajey Arjun”, “Charkha”, ‘Vayu Shakti’, ‘Swadeshi’, while fascinating ‘Ekla Cholo Re’, ‘Hum Taiyyar Hai’, and ‘Jai Bharati’ were played by the band of the Navy.

The event came to a close with the ever-popular tune ‘Sare Jahan se Accha’.

In a magnificent sight, the contrast of the bands playing with the lights on their instruments on and then playing ‘Aye mere watan ke logon’, with the same lights switched off, cast an ethereal spell on the Vijay Chowk.

The drone show involving 3,500 indigenous drones was, however, cancelled due to bad weather, officials said. “The drone show could not take place due to bad weather. Lot of preparations had gone into it,” a senior official said.

The principal conductor of the ceremony was Flight Lieutenant Leimapokpam Rupachandra Singh.

While the Army band was led by Sub Maj Diggar Singh, the Naval and Air Force band commanders were M Anthoni Raj and Warrant Officer Ashok Kumar, respectively.

The conductor of the State Police and CAPF bands was Assistant Sub-Inspector Prem Singh.

The buglers performed under the leadership of Naib Subedar Santosh Kumar Pandey, and the pipes and drums band was played under the instructions of Subedar Major Baswaraj Vagge.

The ceremony, which traces its origins to the early 1950s when Major Roberts of the Indian Army indigenously developed the unique ceremony of display by the massed bands.

Now, it has emerged as an event of national pride when the colours and standards are paraded.

“It marks a centuries-old military tradition when the troops ceased fighting, sheathed their arms and withdrew from the battlefield and returned to the camps at sunset at the sounding of the Retreat,” a Defence Ministry statement said on Saturday.

Thereafter, ‘two minutes silence’ was observed, after which the buglers played ‘Rouse’ and the guards presented ‘Salami Shastra’ again. The Prime Minister then endorsed his remarks in the digital Visitor’s Book of the National War Memorial.

Later, PM Modi and other dignitaries headed to the saluting dais at Rajpath to witness the Republic Day parade.

President Droupadi Murmu led the nation in celebrating Republic Day from Kartavya Path, formerly the Raj Path.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is the Chief Guest at the parade, the first Egyptian premier to be invited to the occasion.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi extended greetings to the nation on the occasion of the 74th Republic Day.

“We wish to move ahead unitedly to make the dreams of the great freedom fighters of the country come true.”

“Many wishes for Republic Day. This time the occasion is more special because we are celebrating it during the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. I wish we move ahead unitedly to make the dreams of the great freedom fighters of the country come true. Happy Republic Day to all fellow Indians!” PM Modi said in his tweet in Hindi.

The week-long celebrations commenced on January 23, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. To mark the occasion, a one-of-a-kind Military Tattoo and Tribal Dance Festival ‘Aadi Shaurya – Parv Parakram ka’ was organised in New Delhi on January 23 and 24.

The events will culminate on January 30, which is observed as the ‘Martyrs’ Day’.

The celebrations were marked by attractive performances from ‘Vande Bharatam’ group of dancers from across the country, tales of bravery by Veer Gatha 2.0 participants, melodious performances by School Bands at the National War Memorial, first-ever e-invitations, largest-ever drone show and 3-D anamorphic projection.

The Republic Day parade, which will begin at around 1030 hrs, will be a unique mix of the country’s military prowess and cultural diversity, depicting the country’s growing indigenous capabilities, Nari Shakti and emergence of a ‘New India’.

In line with tradition, the Tricolour was unfurled, followed by the National Anthem and a booming 21-gun salute. Amongst the many firsts, the 21-gun salute was given with the 105-mm Indian Field Guns. It replaced the vintage 25 pounder gun, demonstrating ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defence. Four Mi-17 1V/V5 helicopters of 105 Helicopter Unit showered petals on the audience present at Kartavya Path.

The parade commenced with the President taking the customary salute.

Marching down the Kartavya Path for the first time was the combined Band & Marching contingent of the Egyptian Armed Forces, led by Colonel Mahmoud Mohamed Abdel Fattah El Kharasawy.

The contingent consisted of 144 soldiers, representing the main branches of the Egyptian Armed Forces.

The first contingent in the uniform of the 61 Cavalry was led by Captain Raizada Shaurya Bali. The 61 Cavalry is the only serving active Horse Cavalry Regiment in the world, with the amalgamation of all the ‘State Horse Units’.

Cultural performances by 479 artists chosen through the nationwide Vande Bharatam dance competition added colour to the Republic Day parade. The theme of the cultural extravaganza was ‘Nari Shakti’ presented by 326 female dancers and ably supported by 153 male dancers, in the age group of 17-30 years.

They presented classical, folk and contemporary fusion dances, depicting the ‘Power of Women’ through five elements — Earth, Water, Air, Space and Fire. This is the second time that the dancers of the cultural programme were selected through a nationwide competition.

Another highlight of the show was a thrilling motorcycle display by ‘Corps of Signals’ Dare Devils team. They enthralled the audience with an array of formations, which will also include a Yoga display.

The President said that in the country’s mission ‘Sarvodaya’ (the upliftment of all), the most encouraging has been the progress made on the economic front.

“Last year, India became the fifth largest economy in the world. It needs to be underlined that this achievement comes against the backdrop of high economic uncertainties around the world. The pandemic has entered the fourth year, affecting economic growth in most parts of the world.”

She said in its initial phase, COVID-19 also hurt India’s economy badly but the country soon came out of the downturn.

“Guided by our able leadership and driven by our resilience, we soon came out of the downturn, and resumed the growth saga. Most sectors of the economy have shaken off the pandemic effect. India has been among the fastest-growing major economies. This has been made possible by timely and pro-active interventions from the Government. The ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, in particular, has evoked great response among people at large.”

She said there have also been sector-specific incentive schemes.

“It is a matter of great satisfaction that those on the margins have also been included in the schemes and programmes and they have been helped in tiding over difficulties.”

The President said that by implementing the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana announced in March 2020, the government ensured food security for poor families at a time when the country was facing economic disruption in the wake of the unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19.

“Because of this help, no one had to go hungry. Keeping the welfare of poor families paramount, the duration of this scheme was extended successively, benefiting about 81 crore fellow citizens. Further extending this assistance, the Government has announced that even during the year 2023, the beneficiaries will get their monthly ration free of cost,” she said.

“The ultimate goal is to create an environment in which all citizens can, individually and collectively, realise their true potential and prosper.”

She said as education builds the right foundation and for this purpose, the National Education Policy has introduced ambitious changes.
