An act of brazen criminality has unfolded in the Mufassil police station area of Simdega district, Jharkhand. A group of approximately 10-12 masked criminals, armed with weapons, stormed the Tumdegi Church, perpetrating a robbery and assault. The perpetrators made off with around 3.50 lakh rupees during the incident. When the Dean and Parish Priest of the church, Thomas Soreng, and Assistant Parish Priest Emmanuel Baghwar, attempted to resist, the criminals launched a violent attack, inflicting serious injuries. Both injured individuals were promptly taken to the Simdega District Sadar Hospital for medical treatment, where they are under the care of the Civil Surgeon. The event occurred late Tuesday night, prompting a swift response from authorities. The SP of Simdega district, along with the DSP and SDPO, and other officials, visited the hospital to gather information from the victims. Police are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter and have intensified efforts to apprehend the suspects. The robbery and assault have sent shockwaves throughout the district, with local residents and public representatives calling on the administration to swiftly arrest the perpetrators and to increase police patrols to ensure the safety of religious sites and rural communities. This is not the first instance of a church being targeted in Simdega district. In June 2025, five masked criminals robbed the Samsera Church in the Bolba police station area at gunpoint, stealing approximately six lakh rupees. During that incident, individuals were brutally beaten, and forced to chant religious slogans. These recurring attacks on religious institutions have sparked widespread concern among the local population, presenting a significant challenge to the administration and the police force.

Following attacks on temples, religious violence has now targeted shrines in Bangladesh. On Thursday, in the Homan Upazila of Cumilla, rioters set fire to three shrines. The arson resulted in one death and injuries to 22 others. The police have sealed off the entire area, considering the sensitivity of the religious issue.

According to reports, a dispute arose between locals and those associated with the shrines regarding Islam, which led to the arson. The police are investigating the entire incident and are initially focused on maintaining peace and order.

The targeted shrines belonged to Kafil Uddin Shah, Haweli Shah, and Abdu Shah. These individuals are highly revered in Bangladesh’s religious landscape. It is believed that they attempted to establish a sect separate from mainstream Islam during their time. After their deaths, shrines were established in Cumilla, which was also their hometown. The area has a significant number of followers of Shah’s shrine.

Two days prior to the incident, Mohsin, the grandson of Kafil Uddin Shah, made a controversial comment about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad on Facebook, leading to police action and Mohsin’s arrest. Subsequently, some locals gathered at Mohsin’s house. The police arrived and left after stating they would take action. An announcement was made over the local mosque’s microphone, after which a crowd reassembled at Mohsin’s house. This time, the crowd was aggressive, and they set fire to the three shrines. The police later managed to control the situation.

A British government report revealed that from August 2024 to December 2024, 133 places of worship were attacked in Bangladesh, with most being Hindu temples. There have also been reports of attacks on over 100 shrines or Sufi sites in Bangladesh. Mohammad Yunus, after becoming Chief Advisor in August 2024, pledged to reduce religious attacks, but he has so far been unsuccessful in this regard.

The persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh continues unabated, escalating from violence and displacement to starvation. Those attempting to provide aid face threats. Recently, Hindu religious leader Gopinath Das Brahmachari experienced similar intimidation, yet he vowed to continue relief efforts. In the Betgari Union of Rangpur district, approximately 20 Hindu families were targeted in three days of communal violence, leaving many homeless and destitute. Over 50 Hindu families were displaced due to looting, arson, and desecration. Several have fled their homes. Three Hindu-owned shops and multiple Tulsi Manch (platforms for worshiping the Tulsi plant) were vandalized. The attacks followed accusations of blasphemy against an 18-year-old Hindu youth, though local sources suggest he was framed with a fake account.
