Prayagraj’s Kumbh Mela has turned into a battleground for a high-profile clash between Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati and the local Mela Authority. In an explosive eight-page legal counter, the swami has rejected a notice branding his actions as fraudulent and called for its unconditional withdrawal.

Issued with apparent malice, the notice questioned the swami’s right to use the prestigious Jagadguru Shankaracharya title. Undeterred, his lawyers fired back on 15 fronts, labeling the move as arbitrary, vengeful, and discriminatory.

Central to the defense is the ironclad legacy from Jagadguru Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati’s will. A pivotal declaration on July 1, 2021, positioned the swami as Jyotish Peeth’s leader. His enthronement came on October 12, 2022, amid grand ceremonies at Ganga Ashram, blessed by lakhs of faithful amid Vedic chants.

The rejoinder paints a grim picture of the fallout: swirling rumors have eroded the swami’s standing, hitting his finances, social influence, and ritual funding hard. ‘This notice inflicts irreparable harm,’ it states, demanding swift reversal.

Threatening stringent legal recourse, the swami vows to protect the sanctity of his position and the Shankaracharya institution. With the mela in full swing, this showdown raises broader questions about state intervention in spiritual successions and the balance of power at sacred events.

Observers note that such frictions could overshadow the spiritual fervor of the Kumbh, prompting calls for dialogue over discord.

A dispute over a rangoli in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra, quickly escalated into violence. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the incident in Yavatmal, stating the need to investigate potential conspiracies and those attempting to disrupt social harmony. He questioned whether there was an effort to polarize the situation, similar to what occurred during the Lok Sabha elections. Fadnavis emphasized that everyone has the right to practice their religious customs, but creating tension among people is entirely wrong.

Following the violent demonstration, Ahilyanagar police detained 30 individuals. Law enforcement also resorted to a mild lathi charge to control the situation. The incident began around 7 am today. The controversy arose from a rangoli created during the Navratri festival, which contained objectionable elements against the Muslim community.

During an event in Vrindavan, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated that if Lord Ram could smile in Ayodhya, then there should be no issue with Lord Krishna smiling as well. This statement has been linked to the ongoing Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi dispute in Mathura. CM Yadav made these remarks at the concluding ceremony of a Bhagwat Katha held at Keshav Dham in Vrindavan. The event was organized by Cabinet Minister Rakesh Sharma to commemorate the success of Operation Sindoor and to pay tribute to martyrs. CM Yadav’s comments were interpreted by many as a veiled reference to the legal battle surrounding the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah Masjid case.
