President Donald Trump has escalated his public attacks on Somali immigrants, stating at a Cabinet meeting that he does not wish to see more migrants from Somalia enter the United States. Trump asserted that these immigrants are a drain on public resources, alleging they contribute minimally to the nation. These controversial statements coincide with preparations for a focused immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota, a state with the United States’ most significant Somali American population.

“They contribute nothing. I don’t want them in our country,” Trump declared to reporters. He further elaborated on his sentiments, stating, “Their country is no good for a reason. Your country stinks and we don’t want them in our country.” The President also revisited his criticism of Representative Ilhan Omar, whose family sought refuge in the U.S. after fleeing Somalia’s civil war and spending time in a Kenyan refugee camp.

Trump referred to immigrants he deemed undesirable as “garbage,” adding, “Ilhan Omar is garbage. She’s garbage. Her friends are garbage.” He characterized Somali immigrants as individuals who “do nothing but complain” rather than actively contributing to the country’s prosperity. These remarks follow the administration’s recent decision to terminate long-standing deportation protections for Somali nationals, which had been active since 1991 amid Somalia’s civil unrest. The planned enforcement in Minnesota is anticipated to target Somali immigrants with final deportation orders in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, with potential for hundreds to be affected. Previously, Trump had declared on social media his intention to send Somalis “back to where they came from,” labeling Minnesota a “hub of fraudulent money laundering activity.”

Mohammad Yunus, a key advisor from Bangladesh, has voiced support for the Rohingya community during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Yunus, who had previously remained silent on the violence against minorities in Bangladesh following the coup, is now advocating for justice for the Rohingya minority in Myanmar.

Speaking at the UN, Yunus stated that the marginalization of the Rohingya cannot continue. He emphasized the need to address the discriminatory policies and actions that have led to the current situation, suggesting that a full national political solution is not a prerequisite for improvement.

Bangladesh currently hosts a significant number of Rohingya refugees, a population that has been the subject of international attention and assistance. The country has taken in a substantial number of Rohingya, primarily fleeing violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. In response to this humanitarian crisis, the international community, including the Netherlands, has stepped in to provide financial aid. The Netherlands announced a contribution of over 500,000 Euros to support the UNHCR’s efforts in providing protection and humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. The UN has also been involved, with key figures visiting refugee camps and pledging support to Bangladesh. However, despite the aid, Bangladesh’s government officials state that the funds are insufficient. Rohingya refugees have also sought refuge in India, facing varying circumstances and recent campaigns. The Rohingya community is often described as one of the most persecuted groups in the world.

The Indian government has provided significant relief to minority communities who have sought refuge in India from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced that individuals belonging to minority communities (Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian) who arrived in India by December 31, 2024, to escape religious persecution, will be permitted to reside in the country without the need for passports or other documentation.

While the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), which came into effect last year, grants Indian citizenship to minority members who arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014, the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, provides a pathway for those arriving after 2014 to remain in India.

This order, issued under the newly implemented Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, offers considerable solace to a large number of people, particularly Hindus from Pakistan who arrived after 2014 and were concerned about their future and residency status.

Recent reports suggest a shift in the situation in Syria. Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, a UN refugee agency official reported that over 850,000 Syrian refugees have returned from neighboring countries. This number is anticipated to surpass one million in the coming weeks. The Deputy High Commissioner for UNHCR, Kelly T. Clements, stated that approximately 1.7 million internally displaced individuals have also returned to their communities as the interim central government gains control over significant portions of Syria. Clements, who has been in Syria for the past three days, described the situation as highly dynamic, presenting an opportunity to address the largest global displacement seen in the past 14 years. The Syrian conflict, which began in March 2011, led to the deaths of around 500,000 people and forced half of the pre-war population of 23 million to leave their homes. More than 5 million Syrians became refugees, primarily seeking refuge in neighboring countries.

Australia has finalized a deportation deal with Nauru, amounting to $267 million, equivalent to ₹2,216 crore. This agreement mandates Nauru to deport Australian non-visa holders. Upon the arrival of the first batch of immigrants, Nauru will receive ₹2,216 crore. Subsequently, it will be provided with ₹381 crore annually for resettlement purposes.

This decision by Australia has ignited protests centered around human rights concerns. Human rights groups have voiced worries, suggesting that the agreement could potentially lead to mass deportations, thereby violating international law.

Nauru, situated in the South Pacific Ocean, is a small island nation with a land area of just 21 square kilometers. It ranks as the third smallest country globally, surpassing only Vatican City and Monaco.

Senator David Shoebridge from the Greens Party has criticized the government’s actions, stating that it is compelling Australia’s smaller neighbors to become 21st-century prison colonies.

Furthermore, violent criminals will also be subject to deportation under this agreement. Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has clarified that those without legal rights to reside in Australia will be accommodated in Nauru for an extended period, ensuring they receive appropriate treatment. A prior agreement in February enabled Australia to return three violent offenders to Nauru. Minister Burke emphasized that anyone lacking a valid visa must leave the country.

In 2023, a ruling by the Australian High Court overturned the government’s policy of indefinite detention for immigrants who could neither obtain visas nor be deported if they faced persecution or harm in their home countries.

The agreement has also drawn criticism from Jana Favero, the Deputy CEO of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, who condemned the deal, describing it as discriminatory, shameful, and dangerous. She noted that the agreement runs counter to a national sentiment of unity and fearlessness, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, instead of demonstrating leadership, targeting migrants and refugees, essentially punishing some based on their place of birth.

Eight years have passed since the violence and forced displacement of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar began. The Tatmadaw (Myanmar’s armed forces) were responsible for the persecution and killings of Rohingya people in 2017-18, leading to the exodus of millions of Rohingya to Bangladesh and India in search of safety.

The Rohingya have been declared the world’s most persecuted community by the United Nations. Approximately 1.3 million Rohingya refugees reside in Bangladesh, living in various refugee camps. Thousands of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar commemorated the eighth anniversary of their mass exodus and demanded a safe return to their former homes in Rakhine State. The conference is addressing the rights and the need for justice for the Rohingya people.

Reports indicate that from November 2023 to the present, 1.5 million Rohingya have entered Bangladesh. Consequently, the number of Rohingya seeking refuge in Bangladesh has reached at least 1.324 million. An additional 25,000 to 30,000 Rohingya are attempting to cross the border into Bangladesh. Furthermore, 30,000 children are born in the camps each year.

A new dispute appears to be brewing in the region bordering India. Tensions have escalated between the Taliban in Afghanistan and neighboring Iran over water. Iran is currently grappling with a severe water crisis, with over 90% of its area on the verge of drying up and several rivers nearly depleted. The Taliban’s actions are exacerbating Tehran’s difficulties.

Notably, Tehran’s prominent newspaper, Jomhuri-e Eslami, recently accused the Taliban of deliberately blocking water flow towards Iran to exert pressure. The newspaper urged the government to move beyond mere silence and respond to the Taliban through political and economic means.

A new travel ban initiated by the Trump administration has come into effect, impacting citizens from numerous countries, primarily in Africa and the Middle East. The restrictions affect individuals from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. The order also impacts those from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela who do not hold valid U.S. visas. While existing visas are not revoked, the ban restricts new applications unless specific exemptions apply. The administration has aimed to avoid legal challenges by focusing on visa procedures rather than outright entry bans, citing security concerns and issues with screening systems and cooperation with U.S. deportation protocols. Rights groups and immigration advocates have criticized the move, particularly the inclusion of Afghanistan. Critics argue the ban undermines refugee protection, especially considering Afghanistan’s significant contribution to U.S.-bound refugees in recent years.

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a Sri Lankan national’s plea for refuge, stating that India cannot host refugees from around the world. A bench led by Justice Dipankar Datta…

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a Sri Lankan national’s plea for refuge, stating that India cannot host refugees from around the world. A bench led by Justice Dipankar Datta observed that India has a huge population of 140 crore and it cannot keep entertaining foreign nationals from across the world.

“Is India to host refugees from all over the world? We are struggling with 140 crore. This is not a dharmashala (free shelter) that we can entertain foreign nationals from all over,” said the Supreme Court.

The petitioner, a Sri Lankan Tamil, was arrested in 2015 for alleged links to the LTTE and convicted under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. In 2022, the Madras High Court slashed his term to seven years, but asked him to leave the country as soon as his sentence was over and stay in a refugee camp before his deportation.

Despite his claims of danger in Sri Lanka and family ties in India, the court ruled that his detention was lawful and Article 19 rights do not apply to foreign citizens. The court suggested the petitioner consider moving to another country, emphasizing India’s limited capacity to accommodate refugees.

The Supreme Court’s ruling comes amid the Union Government’s efforts to deport refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers nationwide. Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs directed state governments and union territories to form Special Task Forces to identify and deport illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants within 30 days, following a directive linked to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
