  • Assam to confer highest award to Ratan Tata for contribution to build cancer care units

    By PTI

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the state government will confer its highest civilian award ‘Assam Baibhav’ on Tata Trusts chairman Ratan Tata for his contribution to build cancer treatment facilities in the state.

The Assam government and Tata Trust are collaborating for setting up 19 Cancer Care Units in the state. The foundation stone for the project was laid in June 2018 in presence of Ratan Tata.

Tata Trusts had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Assam government during the Advantage Assam – Global Investment Summit 2018, held in February that year, giving a formal shape to the project.

‘Delighted to announce that the Government of Assam has decided to confer its highest civilian award, Assam Baibhav, to @RNTata2000 Chairman, @tatatrusts for his exceptional contribution towards furthering cancer care in Assam,’ Sarma Tweeted.

The highest civilian award was announced on the occasion of Asom Divas, celebrated on December 2 every year to commemorate the rule of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha, who founded the Ahom dynasty in Assam that ruled the state for 600 years.

Earlier known as ‘Assam Ratna’, the award was renamed as ‘Assam Baibhav’ by the Sarma-led government in September this year.

This campaign started after renowned businessman and motivational speaker Dr Vivek Bhindra, tweeted about conferring the highest civilian award to Ratan Tata.

  • Modi meets foreign investors today as India looks to attract investments for infrastructure

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will woo the world’s 20 largest pension and sovereign wealth funds at a virtual round table Thursday as India looks to attract investments for its ambitious Rs 111 lakh crore infrastructure investment pipeline for the next five years.

The Modi government’s efforts to attract foreign investments into the infrastructure space comes at a time when around half of the proposed infrastructure investments by 2025 will have to come from private and foreign investors.

To attract these funds to invest in India, it has already announced tax exemptions in this year’s budget to these long-term funds investing in infrastructure, making their income exempt from long-term capital gains, interest and dividend tax.

    The call for investment

The virtual global investor roundtable, organised by the Ministry of Finance and the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund, will be attended by global investors who represent regions like the US, Europe, Canada, Korea, Japan, Middle East, Australia and Singapore, and have an asset under management of $6 trillion, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

The roundtable will also be attended by Indian business leaders like Mukesh Ambani, Ratan Tata, Deepak Parekh, Nandan Nilekani and Uday Kotak, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das.

It will be followed by individual meetings of the investors with the PM over the next couple of weeks.

    Repeated efforts

This is not the government’s first attempt to woo foreign investors.

Just ahead of PM Modi’s visit to the US last year, his government had announced a massive reduction in corporate tax rates to make India competitive vis-a-vis other Southeast Asian economies. The rates were brought down to as low as 15 per cent (effective tax rate of around 17 per cent) for new companies in the manufacturing sector.

  • PM launches ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign

Launching the “Swachhata Hi Seva” campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Saturday all sections of society and every part of the country have joined the cleanliness drive as he noted few would have thought that nine crore toilets would be built and 4.5 lakh villages declared open defecation free in four years.

The “cleanliness is service” campaign will continue till Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on October 2, with Modi asking people to rededicate themselves to fulfilling the father of the nation’s dream of a clean India during an interactive programme.

The prime minister spoke to groups of people from across the country besides several religious figures, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and personalities including Amitabh Bachchan and Ratan Tata through video-conference in which they shared details of their work for the campaign.

The sanitation coverage in India has increased to over 90 per cent from 40 per cent in four years, Modi said.

“Had anybody imagined that more than 450 districts would be open defecation free (ODF) in four years or that 20 states and Union Territories would be open defecation free in four years,” he said, calling it a historic day today as he launched the fortnight-long campaign.

Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous and among the most poor states, would be OFD by October 2, 2018 as per a baseline survey of the clean India campaign. He said that his government is working to ensure that every family has a toilet by October 2019.

His government had built over 1.36 crore toilets since it came to power last year and its emphasis on cleanliness has led to a drastic fall in vector-borne diseases.

Modi lauded Adityanath for his government’s efforts.

The prime minister spoke to people in states such as Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Haryana. He also interacted with Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel involved in cleaning Pangong Lake and its surroundings in Leh, besides religious and spiritual figures like Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, and Mata Amritanandamayi.

He also interacted with Sikh religious figures from Patna Sahib gurudwara and Muslim custodians of Ajmer Sharif shrine among others.

Modi said those working for the cleanliness campaign would be remembered like freedom fighters in the times to come and would be known as true heirs to Gandhi.

Modi said his government is working for “waste to wealth” and sought contributions from everybody. The government alone cannot do it, he added.
