  • Ranji Trophy 2024: Shreyas Iyer Fails To Impress But Mumbai Book Finals Berth Win Against Tamil Nadu | cricket news

Indian middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer continued his poor long-format form, scoring just three runs before being dismissed during the semifinals of Ranji Trophy for Mumbai against Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Iyer was recently dropped from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Central Contract List for 2023-24 following his recent non-participation in domestic red-ball cricket, could manage just three runs in eight balls before he was clean-bowled. by pacer Sandeep Warrier.

The attacking right-handed batsman has had a tough few months. From October–November, Iyer had a monumental ICC Cricket World Cup in India, scoring 530 runs in 11 matches at an average of 66.25 and a strike rate of over 113, with two centuries and three fifties. As the seventh-highest run-scorer in the tournament, Shreyas Iyer was the backbone of the Indian batting line-up which played a crucial role in the team's 10-match unbeaten streak to the finals, where they lost to Australia.

Coming to the match, Mumbai secured the victory against Tamil Nadu to book their berth in the finals of the Ranji Trophy 2024 season. Skipper R Sai Kishore's inner voice has played a big role in bringing Tamil Nadu this far but his decision to bat on a seaming wicket against Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy semifinal was wrong, said Tamil Nadu coach Sulakshan Kulkarni on Monday.

In what turned out to be a surprising call which prompted reactions including those from R Ashwin and Saurashtra's Jaydev Unadkat, Sai Kishore put his side in to bat first on a seaming wicket which had Tamil Nadu reeling at 42/5 inside the first session.

Tamil Nadu could never recover as they were shot out for paltry totals of 146 and 162 in the two innings as Mumbai stormed into the final for the 48th time in the Ranji Trophy.

“The moment I saw the wicket I knew exactly what we were going to get,” Kulkarni told the media after the match. (Ranji Trophy 2024: 'Lord Is Back,' Internet Goes Wild As Shardul Thakur Sizzles With Century For Mumbai In Semifinal Against Tamil Nadu)

“When I saw that they had played on a different pitch in the quarterfinal and what wicket they gave, (that) moment I realized that this is a seaming-friendly wicket and it was going to be a very tough match, we would have to play really well to win this game. I always speak straightforward — we lost the match at 9'o clock on Day One. Everything was set, we won the toss, as a coach, as a Mumbaikar, I know the conditions well. We should have bowled but the captain had some different instinct.”

“Ultimately he is the boss. I can give my feedback and inputs (as to) what kind of wickets and Mumbai's mindset also. (From) 106/7, I knew before the match that this (Mumbai's fightback) may happen.” Kulkarni said Mumbai has the best lower-order in India.

“They are the best (Nos) 9, 10 (and) in India. I told this in the dressing room that their batting starts after (No) 6. I can take the horse to the water, the horse has to drink.” Kulkarni said Tamil Nadu's plans were set for both outcomes of the coin toss.

“We were mentally prepared that whoever wins the toss would bowl first. We knew that we would bowl first. The moment they (TV broadcast) said we would bat first, whatever you say, it goes in the batsmen's minds. That first half an The hour (before play) got in the batsmen's minds,” he said.

“When you get into the first over, third ball, your international player gets out and you see the situation… in the first hour we lost the game and the plot. It was very difficult to come back even though they were 107 for seven ( 106/7). Kulkarni said 'instinctive' decision by Tamil Nadu skipper Sai Kishore has worked both ways.

“Again, the instinctive decision, that inner voice, has played a big role. If you can say (it in) the positive way, the inner voice has helped also in reaching the semifinal,” he said.

“In the previous match against Saurashtra, he went at No 3 and scored 65. That was again the inner voice, which has played (out) the positive way. Every captain has a different mindset, then I would say 'why not, I won't blame the captain'.”Other captains in the last 7-8 years must have tried but they did not reach the semifinal. I looked at it from a positive way,” he added.

“Kishore can certainly take 200 wickets.”

The former Mumbai player and coach however praised left-arm spinner Kishore as a prospect to take 200 wickets in Test cricket if given an opportunity.

“I have seen many left-arm spinners in last many years. As far as a left-arm spinner is concerned, he is a high quality bowler because he has all requisites to be a successful international player,” Kulkarni said.

“He has height, overspin, arm ball, and bounce like Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja). If you play on these kinds of wickets, the way India is playing currently, I think he can certainly take 200 wickets.”

Kulkarni, meanwhile, backed Ajinkya Rahane to lead Mumbai to their 42nd title win in the final starting on March 10.

“I am a big fan of Ajinkya Rahane. He has made a big difference to this team though he has not performed as a batter. But as leader he gelled with the team. He is like my student from U-15 days, he was a successful captain of India,” he said.

“He captained the team when things were not going in favor for India. He has handled the team in a way that they will now win the trophy under Ajinkya Rahane.”

  • Ranji Trophy 2024: 'Lord Is Back,' Internet Goes Wild As Shardul Thakur Sizzles With Century For Mumbai In Semifinal Against Tamil Nadu | cricket news

Shardul Thakur entered the 2024 Ranji Trophy semi-final clash against Tamil Nadu at the Bandra-Kurla Complex Stadium with a noteworthy twist in his career batting statistics: his Test batting average of 19.47 surpassed his overall first-class average of 16.97, which outside of Test cricket stood at 16.48.

Making his mark from the onset, Thakur, while opening the bowling, swiftly dismissed Sai Sudharsan with just the fourth delivery of the match. Later, he claimed the crucial wicket of Vijay Shankar, who had amassed 44 runs, the highest for Tamil Nadu, in their total score of 146. Thakur concluded his bowling spell with figures of 2-48. With Mumbai positioned at 45-2 by stumps on day one, they progressed to 91-3 the following morning. However, their fortunes took a downturn when Tamil Nadu's skipper, Sai Kishore, unleashed havoc on their middle order, securing a five-wicket haul as Mumbai faltered to 106-7.

Amidst the turmoil, Thakur partnered with wicketkeeper Hardik Tamore, elevating the score to 125-7 by lunch. Displaying his prowess with the bat, Thakur launched an assault on the Tamil Nadu bowlers. His fifty came in a mere 58 balls, as he dominated a 105-run partnership, overshadowing Tamore's contribution of 35 runs. In a triumphant display, Thakur reached his hundred milestone with flair, smashing an inside-out six off left-arm spinner Ajit Ram. His jubilation was palpable as he dropped his bat and gloves, punching the air in celebration before elegantly paddle-sweeping the next ball for four. Remarkably, he achieved this feat in just 89 balls after tea, signaling a remarkable highlight in his cricketing journey. Fans went crazy on social media after Thakur completed his maiden first class ton and that too in the all important Ranji Trophy semifinal.

  • ‘I Will Ask Dhoni Why Was I Dropped,’ Virat Kohli’s Contemporary Seeks Explanation From Former Captain After Retirement | cricket news

Manoj Tiwary could have been one of the greatest sports stories in India. Alas, he retires from cricket having underachieved massively with just 15 international matches to his name. Tiwary played his last cricket match, a Ranji Trophy game against Bihar at home ground Eden Gardens for Bengal. As he leaves the field, he talks about his regrets, one of them if not playing any Test match for India.

But Tiwary also regrets not having a long white-ball career with India either. He does not blame his captain at that time who was MS Dhoni. Tiwary, however, says he will certainly ask questions to Dhoni whenever he meets him the next time on why he was dropped despite no fault of his own.

Tiwary had scored his first ODI hundred vs West Indies in December 2011 but had to wait for seven months before getting another game to represent the country. Tiwary missed 14 straight matches for India despite his hundred and was even ignored for Australia tour in 2012 while Virat Kohli, Suresh Rain who were struggling for runs got picked.

Thank you Calcutta Sports Journalists’ Club for the wonderful farewell felicitation. Your constant support throughout my career had been a blessing. My sincere gratitude! __#GoodByeCricket #CSJC pic.twitter.com/eLYMZGkNkq — MANOJ TIWARY (@tiwarymanoj) February 19, 2024

“I want to hear from him whenever I get the opportunity. I will definitely ask this question. I would like to ask Dhoni why I was dropped from the team after scoring the century, especially in that tour of Australia where nobody was scoring runs, neither was Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma or Suresh Raina. I have nothing to lose now,” Tiwary said.

Tiwary could not make his Test debut. The batsman played 12 ODIs, scoring 287 runs with one hundred and fifty each to his name. He also featured in 3 T20Is, but scored just 15 runs. Tiwary played 98 IPL matches as well and accumulated 1695 runs. But he could not make his Test debut, a regret with which he has to live his life after retiring from the sport. He also questions why he was not picked despite averaging 65 in first-class games.

“When I had completed playing 65 first-class matches, my batting average was around 65. The Australia team had toured India then, and I had scored 130 in a friendly game, then I scored 93 against England in a friendly game. I was very close, but they picked Yuvraj Singh instead. So Test cap and the fact that I was ignored after getting the Man of the Match award for scoring a hundred…I was ignored for 14 straight matches. When self-confidence is at its peak and someone destroys that, it tends to kill that player,” Tiwary said.

  • Irfan Pathan Takes Indirect Dig At Selectors, Shares Sarfaraz Khan’s Batting Records In Tweet Which Is Going Viral | cricket news

Two days ago when Virat Kohli announced he was not going to feature for India in the first two Tests vs England, he was replaced by Rajat Patidar. Sarfaraz Khan, who recently struck 55 and 96 vs England Lions as part of India A did not find a place in the team. He does not have a huge fan base but a large section of the Team India enthusiasts feel that he is being kept unjustifiably out of the team. What is troubling some fans is that there is no explanation why Sarfaraz is being kept away from the national team despite flurry of performances.

Sarfaraz has been a consistent performer in the domestic circuit, making heaps of runs season after season in Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments. But the national cap is hard to come by. Sarfaraz was not picked for the two-match Test series in South Africa and has not been preferred to replace Kohli in the first two Tests. At the same time, Dhruv Jurel, who has had a decent show in domestic cricket has received a call up for the Tests vs England.

Irfan Pathan, former India bowler, is not liking what he is seeing at the moment. He feels that Sarfaraz deserves an answer to this constant snub. Irfan, on Wednesday, shared his stats from the first-class cricket and wrote: “If you are him and not getting selected for test cricket, what are you thinking”. Irfan did not name Sarfaraz in his tweet on X but the numbers are of him only. In 44 first-class matches, Sarfaraz has scored 3751 runs at an average of 68.20 and strike rate of 69.59. Irfan had also shared the same numbers.

If you are him and not getting selected for test cricket, what are you thinking??? pic.twitter.com/uVzUfvNPTx

    — Irfan Pathan (@IrfanPathan) January 24, 2024

Not to forget, Sarfaraz also has 13 hundreds and 11 fifties to his name. It is also true that the batter has had a poor show in IPL so far, which could be a big reason why he has got snub for the selectors over the years.

There are many domestic giants in the past who either never got to play for India or did not get a long run with the team. These players include Amol Majumdar, Subramaniam Badrinath, Wasim Jaffer. One can say that Jaffer is an exception as he played cricket for India for some time but even after Virender Sehwag replaced him in the Tests, Jaffer continues to make heaps of runs in domestic cricket but never got the ticket back into the Test side. Hopefully, Sarfaraz’s story will not meet the same fate.

In another news, India player Hanuma Vihari will not be leading Andhra in the ongoing Ranji Trophy after having stepped down from captaincy on Thursday. On Friday, during Andhra’s Group B match against Mumbai, Ricky Bhui was leading the side. According to media reports, Vihari’s decision was personal and he wanted to focus on his batting. Vihari managed 51 runs in the opening game against Bengal, which ended in a draw. Interestingly, he was mulling a move to Madhya Pradesh before the start of the season, as he was eager to play under domestic coach Chandrakant Pandit to revive his international career.

Vihari has represented India in 16 Tests so far, scoring 839 runs at an average of 33.56, including a ton and five half-centuries, with a top score of 111 against the West Indies in Kingston in 2019.
