  • ‘Ramdev spreading false information among public’: Bengal doctors file FIR against yoga guru

    By PTI
KOLKATA: The Bengal chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has lodged a complaint against Yoga guru Ramdev with the police for his alleged comment that many Covid-19 patients including doctors have died as modern medicines cannot treat the disease.

The organisation lodged the complaint at Sinthi police station in Kolkata accusing Ramdev of creating confusion among the public with “misleading and false information” during the pandemic.

“Ramdev has said that Covid patients are suffering and dying more due to modern medicine that cannot treat coronavirus. He has also said that more than 10,000 doctors have died even after taking both the doses of the vaccine, which is absolutely false,” the IMA’s Bengal branch said in the complaint lodged on Friday.

“By spreading such misleading and false information, he is creating confusion during this pandemic, which is a serious offence,” it added.

In a viral video clip, Ramdev is heard saying that “lakhs have died from taking allopathic medicines for COVID- 19.”

The remarks were met with vociferous protests from the doctors’ association, following which Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan asked him to withdraw the “extremely unfortunate” statement.

The yoga guru withdrew it on May 23.

Earlier, the IMA said Ramdev’s remarks should be “considered as hate speech” and he should be booked under the Epidemic Diseases Act for misleading people by making “untutored and unlearned” statements.

The yoga guru on May 24 posed 25 questions to the IMA in an ‘open letter’ on his Twitter handle, asking if allopathy offered permanent relief for ailments such as hypertension and type-1 and 2 diabetes.

Vaccination against COVID-19 is currently underway in the country starting January 16.

A row had erupted over the yoga guru’s alleged remark in a viral video clip in which he was heard questioning some of the medicines being used to treat the coronavirus infection and saying that “lakhs have died from taking allopathic medicines for COVID-19”.

The remarks were met with vociferous protests.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan asked him to withdraw the “extremely unfortunate” statement following which Ramdev withdrew the statement on Sunday.

The IMA had earlier written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that yoga guru Ramdev be booked immediately under sedition charges for alleged misinformation campaign on vaccination and challenging government protocols for treatment of COVID-19.

The apex medical body of modern doctors has also served a defamation notice on Ramdev for his alleged disparaging remarks against allopathy and allopathic practitioners, demanding an apology from him within 15 days, failing which it said it will demand a compensation of Rs 1,000 crore from the yoga guru.

The IMA called his statement ‘rash, irresponsible and selfish’.

The IMA wrote a letter challenging him for open debate.

This one-to-one panel discussion shall be closely supervised and recorded by the electronic and print media which shall also be invited in this panel discussion,”.

The letter further stated that Ramdev and his aide Balkrishna can also join the team of Ayurvedacharyas but only as spectators because they have not sent the qualification to the state office of the IMA.

“The responsibility is on you to decide the date and time of the above proposed healthy discussion, however, the venue shall be decided by us. The above proposal is for your kind consideration and implementation at the earliest to ensure that the deadlock and the confusion created by you shall meet its end. From this day onwards the onus lies on you regarding the above issue,” said the letter further.

The letter further said that this activity shall “ensure the harmony between Allopath & Ayurved to be restored again as it was in the past but was disturbed for these couple of days by your rash, irresponsible and selfish statement”.

The IMA, in another letter also demanded a list of hospitals where thousands of patients experienced the effective impact of products of Patanjali Yogpeeth.

Earlier, the IMA wrote a letter to the Prime Minister of India urging them to stop the misinformation campaign by Baba Ramdev and take appropriate action against him.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Thursday lodged a police complaint against yoga guru Ramdev, seeking an FIR over his “dishonest and wrongful representations” on allopathy.

In the complaint submitted at the IP Estate Police Station, the apex medical body said Ramdev has “wilfully and deliberately spread false, baseless and malicious information” about treatment of Covid patients by established and approved methods and drugs.

“In a video which has surfaced and is being shared widely throughout the social media, Swami Ramdev is seen wilfully and deliberately spreading false, baseless and malicious information with regard to the treatment of various patients suffering from COVID-19 by established and approved treatment methods and drugs,” it said.

  • ‘Press sedition charges against Ramdev for misinformation campaign’: IMA in letter to PM Modi

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that yoga guru Ramdev be booked immediately under sedition charges for alleged misinformation campaign on vaccination and challenging government protocols for treatment of COVID-19.

In its letter to Modi, the IMA said it was gratifying to note that only 0.06 per cent of people who received both the doses of vaccine “got minimal” infection by coronavirus, and “very rarely” vaccinated people had a severe lung infection.

“It is well proved that by vaccination we save our people and country from catastrophic cascades of severe infection. At this juncture, painfully we bring to your kind notice, the video claiming 10,000 doctors have died in spite of taking both the doses of vaccine and lakhs of people have died due to allopathic medicine are circulating virally in the social media, as said by Mr. Ramdev, owner of Patanjali products,” the body said in its letter.

“We the members of the modern medicine professionals submit; we follow the guidelines and protocols issued by the ministry of health through ICMR or the National Task Force in our treatment offered to millions of people coming to our hospitals. If someone is claiming the allopathic medicine has killed people, it is an attempt to challenge the ministry which has issued the protocol for treatment to us,” it stated.

The IMA pointed out that as on date and according to its registry, 753 doctors died in the first wave and 513 lost their lives in the second wave due to COVID-19.

None in the first wave could receive the vaccine and the majority who had died in the second wave also couldn’t take their vaccine for various reasons.

“Now deceitfully attributing 10,000 people have died in spite of two doses of vaccination, is a deliberate move to stall the efforts of vaccination to reach our masses and it needs to be curtailed immediately,” the IMA said.

It said that “IMA, the professional organisation of modern medical doctors” respects, acknowledges and compliments all systems of medicine, especially Indian system of Ayurvedic medicine.

“We are not against any medicine promoted by the ministry and happy to share in most of our public health treatment centres, the drugs promoted by the AYUSH ministry. We opposed certain drugs promoted without the approval of ministry as a curative drug.”

“We are pained to witness the great services rendered by nearly 10 lakhs of modern medical doctors in the forefront to work. are ridiculed and called as a stupid system.”

“We appeal to your highness, to take appropriate action against individuals viciously propagating the message of fear on vaccination and challenge the government of India protocols for treatment for their vested interest in their company products. This in our opinion is a clear-cut case of a sedition and such persons should be booked immediately without any delay under the charges of sedition,” the body said.

  • IMA Uttarakhand likely to file defamation case against Ramdev over controversial remarks

    By ANI
DEHRADUN: Following the controversy of Ramdev’s remarks about allopathic medicine, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Uttarakhand division is likely to file a defamation case against the Yoga Guru.

“IMA-Uttarakhand division is most likely to file defamation case against Baba Ramdev in connection with a viral video on his remarks regarding the use of allopathic medicines in the treatment of COVID-19”, informed IMA Uttarakhand President Dr Ajay Khanna to ANI.

He said that a notice has been sent to Ramdev in this regard earlier.

“IMA Uttarakhand will file the defamation case if a satisfactory reply is not received,” Khanna said.

Ramdev withdrew his statements on allopathic medicine after receiving a strong-worded letter from Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan who called his remarks “inappropriate”.

“We do not oppose modern medical science and allopathy. We believe that allopathy has shown immense progress in surgery and the lifesaving system and served humanity. My statement has been quoted as part of a WhatsApp message that I was reading during a meeting of volunteers. I am sorry if it has hurt anyone’s sentiment,” wrote Ramdev in his letter to the Union Health Minister in Hindi.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Saturday sent a legal notice to yoga guru Ramdev over his alleged statements against allopathy and “defaming” scientific medicine. However, the Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust has denied allegations by the IMA that Ramdev has misled people by making “unlearned” statements against allopathy and defamed scientific medicine.

“IMA brings to the notice of our Health Minister, a video circulating in social media portraying, the celebrated Yoga Guruji saying that ‘modern allopathy ek aisi stupid aur diwaliya science hai’ (modern allopathy is a stupid and failed science),” the association said in its statement.

According to a Haridwar-based Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust statement, Yog Guru Ramdev was reading out a WhatsApp forwarded message in the video that has gone viral on social media.

  • Withdrawing comments on allopathic medicines, regret controversy: Ramdev

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Yoga guru Ramdev on Sunday withdrew his recent statements on allopathic medicine which had triggered strong protests from the medical fraternity.

Responding to a letter from Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, Ramdev said he wants to put the matter to rest.

“Hon’ble Minister, I have received your letter. I withdraw my statement, putting to rest the controversy over various medical practices…(jee aapaka patr praapt hua, uske sandarbh mein chikitsa paddatiyon ke sangharsh ke is poore vivaad ko khedapoorvak viraam dete hue main apna vaktavya vaapis leta hoon),” Ramdev tweeted from his personal Twitter handle, attaching his statement.

Citing a video circulating on social media, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) had on Saturday said Ramdev claimed that allopathy is a “stupid science”.

He also allegedly said medicines such as remdesivir, fabiflu and other drugs approved by the Drugs Controller General of India have failed to treat COVID-19 and “lakhs of patients have died after taking allopathic medicines.”

The apex doctors’ body urged the union health minister to take strict action against Ramdev for misleading people by making “unlearned” statements against allopathy.

In a strongly-worded letter to Ramdev on Sunday, Harsh Vardhan said his remarks on allopathic medicine were “extremely unfortunate”.

“The statement disrespects the corona warriors and hurt the sentiments of the country. Your statement on allopathy can break the morale of healthcare workers and weaken our fight against COVID-19,” he said.

Vardhan further said allopathic medicines have saved lives of crores and comments that the drugs are responsible for death of lakhs is “extremely unfortunate”.

Replying to the minister’s letter, Ramdev in his statement said he respects all forms of medical science and allopathy doctors have saved people during the pandemic by risking their own lives.

“I accept that allopathy has shown remarkable progress in life-saving system (jeevan raksha pranali) and surgery and has served humanity,” he said.

Regarding the video in question, Ramdev said he was actually reading out messages forwarded on WhatsApp.

“…if that has hurt sentiments of anyone, then I regret it,” he added.

However, he also said traditional ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy have also controlled and provided permanent solution to several complex diseases like blood pressure, thyroid, sugar, arthritis, hepatitis and asthma.

“…the allopathic doctors should also not mock the Indian medical systems like ayurveda and yoga by calling it as ‘pseudo-science’ as it hurts crores of people…,” he asserted.

Earlier, the IMA said Ramdev’s remarks should be “considered as hate speech” and he should be booked under the Epidemic Diseases Act for misleading people by making “untutored and unlearned” statements.

“We demand an unconditional public apology from Ramdev to allopathy and its practitioners,” IMA had said.

  • Trouble for Ramdev as Delhi doctors file complaint against yoga guru over allopathy remarks

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Medical Association (DMA) on Saturday lodged a police complaint against yoga guru Ramdev for allegedly describing modern medicine as a “stupid science”.

In a statement submitted along with the police complaint, the DMA alleged, “At this time of crisis, the whole country is battling against the pandemic, risking their own and families lives with whatever resources are available. Baba Ramdev has assaulted the medical science and the medical profession apparently for personal gains”.

According to a senior police officer, the DMA has submitted its complaint at the Daryaganj Police Station.

“We have received the complaint and enquiry is being conducted,” the officer said.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has said that the Union health ministry should take action against Ramdev as he has misled people by making “unlearned” statements against allopathy and defamed scientific medicine.

The Resident Doctors’ Associations of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Safdarjung Hospital too condemned Ramdev’s statement and demanded “strictest steps” be taken against him.

Citing a video circulating on social media, the IMA said Ramdev has claimed that “allopathy is a stupid science” and medicines such as Remdesivir, Faviflu, and other drugs approved by the Drugs Controller General of India have failed to treat COVID-19 patients.

“Lakhs of patients have died after taking allopathic medicines”, the association said quoting the yoga guru. Ramdev should be prosecuted under the Epidemic Diseases Act as “untutored” statements are “a threat to the literate society of the country as well as to the poor people falling prey to him”, the apex doctors’ body said in a statement.

Reacting to the controversy, Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust issued a statement, denying the comments, and said, “it is clarified that the truncated version of the video is totally out of context of what is sought to be conveyed by Swami jee.”

  • Video taken out of context, Ramdev has no ill will against modern science: Patanjali

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Claiming that a video purportedly showing yoga guru Ramdev criticising allopathy is “truncated” and taken “out of context”, Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust on Saturday said he has utmost regard for doctors and bears no ill will against modern science.

The clarification came after the Indian Medical Association (IMA) demanded strict action against Ramdev, saying he had misled people by making “unlearned” statements against allopathy and defaming scientific medicine.

Citing the video circulating on social media, the IMA said Ramdev is seen saying that “allopathy ek aisi stupid aur diwalilya science hai. (allopathy is such a stupid science)”.

He also allegedly claimed medicines such as remdesivir, fabiflu and other drugs approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) have failed to treat COVID-19 patients.

IMA said Ramdev’s statements should be “considered as hate speech” and requested the authorities to book him under relevant sections of the Epidemic Diseases Act as he has misled people by making “untutored and unlearned” statements.

“We demand an unconditional public apology from Ramdev to allopathy and its practitioners,” the apex doctors’ body said.

However, issuing a statement, the Haridwar-based Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust said the video has been taken “out of context”.

“It is clarified that the truncated version of the video is totally out of context of what is sought to be conveyed by Swami jee,” it said.

Ramdev has “utmost regards” for doctors and support staff who have been working day and night during such a challenging time of the pandemic, as per the statement by the yoga guru’s Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust.

He was “reading out a forwarded WhatsApp message received by him and various other members who were participating in the event”, it added.

“Swami jee has no ill-will against the modern science and good practitioners of modern medicine. What is being attributed against him is false and nugatory,” said the statement signed by Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust General Secretary Acharya Balakrishna.

Ramdev urges to keep the “unity among all the medical practitioners and their treatment-ways” in order to overcome the present challenge successfully in a timely manner, it added.

“He believes that allopathy is a progressive science; and a combination of allopathy, ayurveda and yoga will be beneficial to everyone during such difficult times,” the statement said.

Earlier on Saturday, the Resident Doctors’ Associations of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Safdarjung Hospital too demanded “strictest steps” against Ramdev over the alleged video.

The IMA said Ramdev should be booked for his remarks.

“The Union health minister (Harsh Vardhan) who himself is a practising modern medicine allopathic postgraduate and head of this (health) ministry, should either accept the challenge and accusation of this gentleman and dissolve the modern medical facility or boldly face and prosecute the person for his words of arson on the sovereignty of the country and book him under the Epidemic Act to save millions of people from such unscientific utterances,” the IMA said.

It alleged that Ramdev was trying to take advantage of the situation and create a sense of fear and frustration among the people at large.

He is doing this “so that he can sell his illegal and unapproved so-called medicines and make money at the cost of the public at large”, the association said.

The IMA said Ramdev deserves to be prosecuted for disobeying and causing danger to people’s lives by making them distrust the advice of allopathy doctors.

“The IMA demands and resolves if the minister (Harsh Vardhan) is not taking suo moto action we will be forced to resort to democratic means of struggle to propagate the truth to the common man and knock the doors of the judiciary to get due to justice,’ it said.

In February this year, Patanjali Ayurved, which is led by Ramdev, had relaunched its Coronil tablets to treat COVID-19, claiming that it had received certification from the Ayush Ministry as per the World Health Organization (WHO) certification scheme.

Interestingly, Coronil was launched in a function presided over by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.

However, the WHO later clarified that it had not reviewed or certified the effectiveness of any traditional medicine for the treatment of COVID-19.
