Bihar’s political theater turned dramatic when an RJD MLA’s offhand comment labeling iconic leader Ram Vilas Paswan as ‘becheara’ ignited a firestorm in the state assembly. LJP-RV legislators, fiercely loyal to the late patriarch, boycotted proceedings and staged a vociferous demonstration, forcing RJD to backpedal with tribute slogans.

It all started during a session where Bodh Gaya representative Kumar Sarvajeet urged installing Paswan’s statue in Patna to celebrate his monumental role in Bihar politics. But his characterization of Paswan’s career path as that of a ‘poor fellow’ crossed a line for LJP-RV, led by Chirag Paswan’s faction.

Party spokesperson Raju Tiwari minced no words outside the assembly premises. He highlighted Paswan’s stellar record—serving six PMs over five decades without blemish—and insisted Tejashwi Yadav tender a formal apology. ‘This is a blatant disrespect to a towering figure,’ Tiwari thundered to reporters.

Sarvajeet hit back, portraying Paswan as Bihar’s Dalit messiah whose work transcended communities. He mocked Tiwari’s opposition, vowing it would take ‘seven lifetimes’ to derail the statue demand. RJD MLAs’ subsequent chants honoring Paswan diffused the immediate crisis.

This clash reveals the high stakes of legacy battles in Bihar’s caste-driven landscape. With elections looming, such incidents could reshape alliances and voter sentiments, keeping Paswan’s name central to the narrative.

The Bihar Assembly turned into a battleground Monday as NDA lawmakers unleashed pandemonium over an RJD legislator’s alleged slur against the late Ram Vilas Paswan. Describing the veteran leader as…

The Bihar Assembly turned into a battleground Monday as NDA lawmakers unleashed pandemonium over an RJD legislator’s alleged slur against the late Ram Vilas Paswan. Describing the veteran leader as ‘bechara’ during last week’s debate, Bodh Gaya MLA Kumar Sarvesh provoked outrage from LJP(RV) members, who stormed the well of the house shouting for justice. Speaker Prem Kumar’s repeated calls for calm fell on deaf ears, leading to a swift suspension of proceedings.

Accusing RJD of disrespecting a Dalit icon, ruling alliance MLAs refused to budge until a formal apology was issued. The controversy overshadowed RJD’s push for hiking reservation quotas from 50% to 85% for OBCs, EBCs, and other backward classes. In response, opposition benches waved placards amplifying their demand, turning the floor into a visual clash of ideologies.

Outside the house, tensions simmered with prior protests including effigy burnings targeting Tejashwi Yadav. RJD’s Sarvesh dismissed the backlash as a ploy to distract from central government policies eroding marginalized communities’ rights. He insisted his words were twisted out of context, praising Paswan’s legacy by noting better outcomes under his influence.

LJP(RV)’s Raju Tiwari condemned the statement as blatantly casteist, reaffirming their commitment to honoring Paswan’s memory. As the political slugfest intensifies, Bihar’s lawmakers appear more focused on personal vendettas than governance, raising questions about legislative productivity amid the ongoing budget session.

In a fiery display of outrage, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) activists in Patna set ablaze an effigy of Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday, protesting a shocking insult to their founder…

In a fiery display of outrage, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) activists in Patna set ablaze an effigy of Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday, protesting a shocking insult to their founder Ram Vilas Paswan by an RJD lawmaker. The term ‘bechara’ – implying helplessness – hurled in the Bihar assembly has sparked a political firestorm.

Hundreds gathered at Kargil Chowk, chanting against RJD and demanding justice for what they see as a deliberate smear on Paswan’s towering legacy. Arun Bharti, the party’s MP and key organizer, led the charge, calling the remark ‘utterly baseless and malicious.’ He pointed to RJD’s pattern of belittling Dalit icons and the underprivileged.

‘No apology from Tejashwi in the house means our agitation persists,’ Bharti asserted firmly. State president Raju Tiwari added that RJD’s declining relevance stems from such reckless rhetoric, emphasizing Paswan’s unparalleled service to every section of society.

The trigger was RJD MLA Kumar Sarvajeet’s comment during budget discussions, which drew swift condemnation from Chirag Paswan on Saturday. As a central minister, Chirag’s strong words amplified the uproar, positioning LJP as fierce defenders of Paswan’s honor.

This clash highlights Bihar’s volatile politics, where personal attacks on leaders like Paswan – a veteran champion of social justice – can mobilize masses overnight. Analysts note it could bolster LJP’s base among Paswan loyalists while embarrassing RJD ahead of crucial polls. The coming days will test both sides’ strategies in this escalating feud.

Union minister Chirag Paswan on Saturday asserted that JD(U) president Nitish Kumar will “return as chief minister of Bihar” upon the victory of the BJP-led NDA in assembly polls due…

Union minister Chirag Paswan on Saturday asserted that JD(U) president Nitish Kumar will “return as chief minister of Bihar” upon the victory of the BJP-led NDA in assembly polls due later this year. Talking to reporters here, Paswan said he would “welcome” the entry into politics of Kumar’s son Nishant and slammed RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav for claiming that a conspiracy was being hatched to prevent it.
“I would welcome it if Nishant chooses to enter politics. But it has to be his personal decision. As far as Tejashwi Yadav is concerned, he should realise that as the leader of opposition in the assembly, he ought to speak responsibly,” said Paswan, who heads the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas).
“If Tejashwi Yadav is so sure of a conspiracy against the chief minister’s son, he should meet Nitish Kumar and share whatever information he is privy to, instead of making rash comments in public,” he added. The Hajipur MP also extended birthday greetings to Kumar, who has turned 74, and said, “The NDA is looking forward to fighting and winning the polls under his leadership. After the elections, he will return as the chief minister.”
The averment from Paswan, a former bete noire of the JD(U) supremo, comes in the backdrop of speculations that the BJP, which is fed up with playing second fiddle to Kumar, could pull the rug from under the feet of Kumar, who might retaliate by dumping the NDA again and lending his heft to the opposition camp.
Paswan was also asked about Yadav likening 20 years old NDA rule in Bihar to a “rickety old car in need of replacement” and the RJD’s allegation that some of the recently inducted ministers in the state had a criminal past. He said, “They should remember that if they point one finger at others, there would be three aimed at themselves. If they start talking about the last 20 years, people will be compelled to recall their 15 years’ rule in Bihar when the state had become notorious for lawlessness. And they must never complain about criminal records. Have they not been summoned recently?” The allusion was to the recent direction issued to Yadav’s father and RJD president Lalu Prasad, besides elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav and sister Hema by a Delhi court which has asked them to appear in connection with the land for jobs scam.
Paswan also claimed that things are not going to be smooth between the RJD and its old ally Congress, which has until now been capitulating before the regional party.

“Hints have been thrown by the Congress’ recently appointed in charge for Bihar,” he said.

The Congress in charge for Bihar Krishna Allavaru has toured the state twice in the last couple of weeks and vowed to rebuild the organisation and eradicate factionalism.
