  • Was told by Rajasthan in the start that I would be used up the order: Ravichandran Ashwin

    By IANS

NAVI MUMBAI: In IPL 2022, Rajasthan Royals have brought in a funky experiment: – promote Ravichandran Ashwin in the batting order and use him as a pinch hitter so that the line-up gets elongated.

On Wednesday, against Delhi Capitals, Ashwin was brought out at number three and despite being stuck twice in the innings, got his maiden IPL fifty in 38 balls though Rajasthan lost by eight wickets at DY Patil Stadium.

“No, there’s no license (on pinch hitter role) that has been given. Starting from the season, it was communicated properly to me that I would be used up the order. We had a few practice games as well where I opened, and I have kind of enjoyed it.”

“Have worked a lot on my batting, so it’s nice to see whatever it’s been worked on translates on the field. Pretty good feel about the knock today, nevertheless it didn’t come in a winning cause,” said Ashwin on his pinch-hitter role in post-match virtual press conference.

From 107/2 in 14 overs, Rajasthan had a meltdown in the last six overs, making just 53 runs while losing four wickets to be 160/6 at the end of their innings. With no Shimron Hetmyer to give the finishing kick, Rajasthan couldn’t get the desired end from Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag and Rassie van der Dussen.

“There were no switch offs in that phase. I think Hetmyer has gone home for the birth of his child so Rassie came in place for him. Hettie has been giving us the finishes in most of the games. A finisher is always worth the weight in gold.”

Ashwin felt Rajasthan didn’t have luck on their side during the match, right from toss to defending 160. “I thought even the toss was pretty crucial today because the wicket was a touch tacky today. Had we had some luck and taken the catches, the game would have taken a different course. But these things do happen and the back end of the tournament is always pressure. Hopefully we can turn it on and string in a couple of wins together.”

Explaining further about the tacky nature of the pitch at DY Patil Stadium and the difficulties it caused to Rajasthan, Ashwin said, “Today the pitch wasn’t quite the easiest so there was communication around that. Obviously, the communication to keep going out to play for a few more overs and set it up keeps coming in. Most often than not, if you find yourself hitting the 100-run mark by the 13th over, you end up getting to 180, that’s generally the kind of algorithm that works.”

“Today was again we hit the 100-mark on a quite tough pitch while batting first, I think just maybe 15-20 runs short at the end. But like I said you never really know unless both sides have played. We have made a good fist of these sorts of low-scoring games in the past but today, the wickets, catches; nothing really went our way in the second half. It was not our day.”

  • Need to refrain from speculation, truth will emerge in probe: Minister over rape case against son

    By PTI

JAIPUR/NEW DELHI: Rajasthan minister Mahesh Joshi on Monday said people should refrain from speculating over the rape case lodged against his son and stressed that “police will do justice” as the BJP accused the state government of trying to save the accused.

State Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra too assured action against the minister’s son if found guilty.

The FIR against the state public health and engineering department minister’s son Rohit Joshi was lodged in Delhi by a 23-year-old woman, who alleged that she was raped multiple times over a year.

After lodging a zero FIR, the Delhi Police said they informed about it to the Rajasthan Police, which will conduct further investigation. The complaint also mentions that she was raped in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan.

However, Sawai Madhopur Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar Vishnoi said on Monday that they have not received any FIR from the Delhi Police yet.

Meanwhile, a Delhi police officer said they have started the process to convert the zero FIR into the regular one as the commission of sexual assault committed in the Delhi’s Sadar Bazar police station jurisdiction have also been mentioned.

Reacting to the allegations against his son, Joshi said, “Instead of speculation and the media trial in this case, police should be allowed to do their job. I am sure police will do justice, go deep and find out the truth.”

“All I want to say is that I have spent all my life with truth and justice. As media reported that an FIR has been registered, police should investigate thoroughly and honestly. Be in this episode or any other case, I will always stand with truth and justice,” Joshi told reporters here.

Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra came to the Joshi’s rescue, saying action will be taken on the basis of the report of the case investigating officer.

“Be it anyone, whether he is my son or someone else’s son, if he is found guilty, then the Congress party will 100 per cent take action,” Dotsara said.

The Opposition BJP in the state alleged that the state government is trying to save the accused. “It is unfortunate that the government is trying to save the accused. It is the Congress culture, which tries to cover up such cases eventually, which is unfortunate,” Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Gulab Chand Kataria said.

State Mines Minister Pramod Jain Bhaya defended Joshi, saying allegations and counter-allegations are part of politics. Many things are concocted and they have no basis, he said.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said the woman’s counselling was conducted and she was medically examined at Hindu Rao Hospital.

Since the allegations of commission of sexual assault committed in the Delhi’s Sadar Bazar police station jurisdiction have also been mentioned, investigation has been taken up and the further process has been started to convert the same into a regular FIR, he said.

The case was registered on May 8 at a police station in Delhi’s North District under Sections 312 (causing miscarriage), 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit an offence), 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage, etc), 376 (rape), 377 (unnatural offences) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, the Delhi Police had said.

The woman has alleged that Rohit Joshi raped her several times from January 8 last year to April 17 this year, promising to marry her.

  • Officer suspended in Rajasthan after order against caste name, designation on vehicle number plates

    By PTI

JAIPUR: A Rajasthan Administrative Service officer was suspended here following a controversy over an order directing action against those who inscribe the name of their caste or designation on vehicle number plates.

The controversy erupted after the order mentioned word “Gurjar”, inviting a sharp reaction.

Additional Commissioner of the Transport Department Akash Tomar issued the order on Monday to all RTOs/DTOs, saying “pradhan, sarpanch, Gurjar, etc”. words are being written on the registration plate vehicles in the state, which is a punishable offense under the Motor Vehicle Act.

He directed officials to take strict action under rules against such violators and send a report of the action taken to the headquarters in seven days.

Reacting to the order, Gurjar leader Vijay Singh Bainsla said the Gurjar caste had been targeted in the order and it was inappropriate for an officer to issue such an order.

Condemning the order, he asked whether only Gurjar people write names on number plates.

Shortly after reactions, the officer revised the order and dropped “pradhan, sarpanch and Gurjar”.

In the revised order, he said action should be taken against those who have written any “designation” or “caste indicator word” on the number plate.

Later, the Department of Personnel issued an order to suspend Tomar.

However, the reason for the suspension was not mentioned in the order.

While two officials of Panchayati Raj and Rural Development Department were imposed fines of Rs 10,000 each in two separate cases, three others have been fined Rs 5,000 each, the Commission said in a statement.

The Commission imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the Hanumangarh Zila Parishad’s chief executive officer for ignoring an RTI application for two-and-a-half years.

  • Gehlot urges Centre to give national status to Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project

    By PTI

JAIPUR: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday urged the Centre to give national status to the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project, saying this would enable the ERCP’s fast completion and hence 13 districts of east Rajasthan would get drinking and irrigation water.

The project aims to harvest surplus water, available during the rainy season in rivers in southern Rajasthan such as Chambal and its tributaries including Kunnu, Parvati, Kalisindh, and use it in 13 south-eastern districts of the state where there is a scarcity of water for drinking and irrigation.

“With limited resources of the state government, this project will take 15 years to complete and the cost of the project will also increase. If the central government gives it the status of a national project and if the grant is received, the work will also be completed faster and at a lower cost,” he tweeted.

“Our intention is that the work of ERCP should be completed soon, so that 13 districts of East Rajasthan can get drinking and irrigation water. The state government has so far spent about Rs 1,000 crore on ERCP and has proposed Rs 9,600 crores in this year’s budget,” Gehlot said.

He also targeted Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on this issue, saying that he is not doing anything for the state despite being the Union Minister of Jal Shakti from Rajasthan.

“It is beyond comprehension that if a desert and water-stressed state like Rajasthan does not get the status of a national project, then which state will get it?,” he said.

  • Hero cop runs through flames to save baby from burning house in Rajasthan

    Express News Service

JAIPUR:  Amid the grim reports of communal tension and violence from Rajasthan’s Karauli district comes a heartening piece of news. A policeman has emerged as a hero for saving a child from a house on fire.  When constable Netresh Sharma, 31, saw a child weeping inside the house that had been set ablaze by a mob, he rushed inside, took the child and rushed out. In  the process, also helped three women who were trapped flee to safety.

A picture of him with a child in his arms amid burning houses is going viral on social media. The Rajasthan government and police are also hailing the heroic act of the constable. CM Ashok Gehlot spoke to him appreciating his bravery and humanism in risking his life to save others.

The house was set afire during the riots and arson in Karauli on Saturday. Trapped inside, the four-year-old  child, his mother and two other women were crying for help. The mother had the baby in her lap. She had wrapped him in a cloth to save him from the flames.

When Sharma saw them, immediately ran into the house through the flames. “Four lives were about to perish before my eyes.  Even if I lost my life, it was my duty to save them at any cost. There was no time to think about what would happen to my own life!”

Netresh says he will never forget the terror on the faces of the child and the women. “When I reached the house, the three women and the child were in a bad condition.  I took the child in my lap and told the women that to come after me. I brought to safety about 20 meters away from the burning house and handed the child back to his mother.”

  • Rajasthan communal clashes: CM Gehlot says PM Modi should appeal to people to shun polarisation

    By PTI

BARMER: A day after communal clashes broke out in Rajasthan’s Karauli district, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday alleged that an environment of religious polarisation had been created in the country after the BJP-led NDA came to power at the Centre and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should appeal to people to shun this unfair division.

He said peace, brotherhood and harmony are important for development.

“(In view of) the atmosphere which has been created in the country after the NDA government came to power, I believe that the prime minister himself should appeal to the people of the country that this polarisation in the name of religion and caste is not justified and is not in the interests of the country,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the incident that happened yesterday in Karauli and even today, there was a fight in Beawar over a small issue and one person was killed. If religions (of the persons involved) are different then in the name of religion, people polarise and make it an issue,” he told reporters in Barmer.

Gehlot also targeted the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh, saying fake encounters took place there. He said doing fake encounters is easy but the country will progress when the rule of law is established. “Only then justice will be done,” he said.

On the Karauli violence, Gehlot said he was worried since Saturday evening when he came to know about the incident. “I have directed the DGP to take stern action against all those who were involved in the matter, they may be from any community or any religion. A message should go to them that the rule of law will be established in Rajasthan, this is my belief.”

Incidents of arson and vandalism were reported on Saturday after stones were pelted at a motorcycle rally taken out to celebrate the Hindu New Year when it was passing through a Muslim-dominated locality, according to police. At least 35 people were injured in the violence.

The chief minister said that inflation and unemployment are key challenges today. Targeting the Centre over inflation and increasing fuel prices, he said that such a big deception never happened in the country.

He said that prices were not increased during elections in five states and now the fuel prices have started increasing. “The people of the country should understand their governance model,” he said.
