In a blistering broadside against AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and minister Parvesh Verma on Saturday likened him to ‘Delhi’s Rahman Daku’, the infamous gangster from Bollywood’s ‘Dhurandar’. The attack, timed amid AAP’s spiraling internal crisis, zeroes in on the opulent renovations at Kejriwal’s erstwhile chief ministerial residence, dubbed ‘Sheesh Mahal’ for its grandeur.

Posting on X, Gupta lamented AAP’s transformation: ‘From cries of revolution to a haven of corruption – your party has lost its soul.’ She highlighted the mass defection of Rajya Sabha members as evidence of Kejriwal’s dictatorial grip, predicting a similar fate for AAP in Punjab’s 2025 polls.

Verma escalated the rhetoric with a viral video walkthrough of the sealed Civil Lines bungalow. Detailing the excesses – 1.5 crore kitchen, 95-lakh switches, 88-lakh chandelier, 28-lakh TV, and a staggering 5-lakh monthly power bill – he painted a picture of unchecked extravagance. ‘Kejriwal, who pledged simplicity and rejected official perks, built a palace with taxpayer money,’ Verma charged.

Recalling Kejriwal’s affidavit vowing no government housing and his symbolic ‘aam aadmi’ attire – ill-fitting clothes and a humble pen – Verma called it a cunning ploy. ‘He hid his greed behind a poor man’s mask,’ he asserted in a follow-up video, twisting Kejriwal’s words: ‘No ordinary home for me – only a mahal.’

The barbs land as AAP reels from high-profile exits, including Raghav Chadha’s group joining BJP over claims of eroded integrity. This saga revives old controversies, potentially galvanizing BJP supporters while AAP scrambles to defend its image ahead of crucial state elections. Political analysts see this as a strategic BJP move to exploit AAP’s vulnerabilities on corruption charges.
