He is giving up Wayanad and his sister and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi is set to contest from there in the ensuing bypoll.

“I was a stranger to you and yet you believed in me. You embraced me with unbridled love and affection. It didn’t matter which political formation you supported, it didn’t matter which community you were from or which religion you believed in or which language you spoke,” Rahul said. “When I faced abuse day after day, your unconditional love protected me. You were my refuge, my home and my family. I never felt for even a moment that you doubted me,” he said.

The Congress leader said his sister Priyanka Gandhi will be representing Wayanad if the people give her an opportunity and expressed confidence that she will do an excellent job at being their MP.

After a leadership meeting in New Delhi, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge had on June 17 said that Rahul will keep the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh and vacate the Wayanad seat from where his sister Priyanka will contest. In his letter written on Sunday, Rahul also said that he cannot forget the “bravery, beauty and confidence” with which young girls translate his speeches in front of thousands of people.

“I do not know how to thank you for what you have done for me. For the love and protection you gave me when I needed it most. You are part of my family and I will always be there for each and every one of you,” he said.

    By PTI

RAE BARELI: Union Minister and Amethi MP Smriti Irani on Wednesday took a dig at Congress president Sonia Gandhi saying unlike the Rae Bareli MP, she knows what work she has done in her constituency.

The Amethi MP had the dig while addressing people of Rae Bareli district’s Mamuli village, which, however, falls under the Salon assembly segment of the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency represented by Irani.

“There are two MPs in this (Rae (Bareli) district. You can say with pride that our BJP MP, our didi, can give an account of all work done by her after visiting us,” she said.

“Ask others if their MP was seen, has their MP an account of which drains were cleared and where were the ‘khadanja’ (a semi-pucca road) made,” said Irani without naming anyone.

Congress’ Sonia Gandhi represents the Rae Bareli seat in the Lok Sabha.

Irani had won the Amethi seat in the last Lok Sabha election defeating sitting Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.

The BJP leader said this has happened only because “you have chosen a representative who can come to you and give details of her work, who has not only been recognised as an MP but has been given the status of a sister and so she has come to her family and is telling what all she has done in two years”.

Irani who also inaugurated Panchayat Bhawan in the village said in the past two years, in Mamuli village alone, works worth Rs 90 lakhs have been done.

“This does not include the work done at the Vidhan Sabha or the panchayat level,” she said, adding she also has the videos and photos of the work as evidence and she does not go only by what the officers give her on papers.

Earlier on her arrival, Irani visited a school in the village and interacted with the children there.

  • Rae Bareli rail coach factory was underutilised before 2014: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said earlier governments did not make the most of India’s potential and cited the rail coach factory in Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency as an example.

Asserting that “positive mindset and approach are needed to change things,” he laid stress on realising “our full potential to ensure development of the nation”.The Prime Minister was speaking at the centennial foundation day of Lucknow University via video link on Wednesday.

“For long, it has been a problem that we have not utilised our potential to the full. In the past, it was also true for the governance of our country. We have tried to change this after coming to power,” he said.

“The rail coach factory in Rae Bareli is an example of how we can change things by changing our outlook. The factory was set up many years ago and had all the machinery to make train coaches, yet only denting-painting (maintenance) was done there. Tall promises were made for the factory, but nothing changed. When we came to power in 2014, we looked into the affairs and, within six months, the factory started making rail coaches. It is now one of the biggest coach manufacturers in the country,” he said. The PM also cited urea production in the country to underline his point.

“I was surprised to know that despite having sufficient urea plants, the country was importing urea only because our plants were not working to their full potential. The previous governments had not done much to change this. When we came to power, we made changes, and now the country has become self-reliant in urea,” he said.

Will power and good intentions were equally important as capabilities, he said.He also spoke about his experience of popularising khadi with the help of students in Gujarat through a fashion show at Porbandar on Gandhi Jayanti in 2002.This made khadi “fashionable”, he said, adding that the quantity of khadi sold in the last six years was more than that sold in 20 years before 2014.
