  • Bryan Cranston, Jessica Chastain join star-studded Times Square rally of striking actors and writers

    By Associated Press

NEW YORK: SAG-AFTRA held its largest and most star-studded rally yet Tuesday in Times Square in a picket sign-waving show of solidarity 12 days into the actors strike.

A day after a Variety report questioned the lack of A-listers that have hit picket lines thus far, the rally Tuesday boasted more star wattage than perhaps any single strike action yet. Among those joining throngs of demonstrators were Jessica Chastain, Bryan Cranston, Brendan Fraser, Ellen Burstyn, Wendell Pierce, Steve Buscemi, Rachel Zegler, Michael Shannon, Jane Curtin, Christian Slater and Chloe Grace Moretz.

Taking up a full city block, actors and representatives from the actors union took turns giving fiery speeches on a stage in the heart of Times Square while tourists gawked and passing trucks honked in support. At times, the actors took aim at the corporate lights and billboards around them, including the Walt Disney-owned ESPN and ABC studios that sat alongside the rally.

“We’ve got a message to Mr. Iger,” said Cranston, directing his comments at Disney CEO Bob Iger. “I know, sir, that you look through things from a different lens. We don’t expect you to understand who we are but we ask you to hear us, and beyond that, to listen to us when we tell you we will not be having our jobs taken away and given to robots. We will not have you take away our right to work and earn a decent living.”

The rally took place a stone’s throw from Broadway theaters and, given the talent involved, featured a higher degree of show business than your usual labor rally. “Avatar” actor Stephen Lang quoted Frederick Douglass. Wendell Pierce recited Samuel Beckett. Tituss Burgess didn’t speak; he sang Stephen Sondheim.

Arian Moayed, who played the investor Stewy Hosseini in “Succession,” compared the characters of the HBO series to the studio executives the actors are negotiating with.

“It’s like these people haven’t seen (expletive) ‘Succession,’” Moayed exclaimed. “It’s about you!”

Christine Baranski of “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight” likewise drew from her own credits.

“We will not live under corporate feudalism. It is time, it is just simply time to make things right. Our contribution will not be undervalued, and we will not be robbed,” said Baranski before concluding: “Let’s fight the good fight!”

Earlier this month, actors joined striking screenwriters who walked out in May. It’s the first time both unions have been on strike at the same time since 1960. The stoppage has shuttered nearly all film and television production. Actors say the streaming revolution has altered pay in entertainment, stripping them of residuals and remaking working conditions. They are also seeking guardrails against the use of artificial intelligence, along with increases to the union’s health care and pension programs.

“Our industry has changed exponentially,” said Cranston. “We are not in the same business model that we were in even 10 years ago. And yet, even though they admit that that’s the truth in today’s economy, they are fighting us tooth and nail to stick to the same economic system that is outmoded, outdated. They want us to step back in time.”

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which is negotiating on behalf of studios, has said it presented actors with a generous deal that included the biggest bump in minimum pay in 35 years among other benefits. Since talks broke off and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists commenced the strike, the sides have not negotiated and no talks are scheduled.

“We may be on strike but I said to them on July 12 we are ready to continue talking tomorrow and every day after until we reach a deal,” said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, chief negotiator for SAG-AFTRA. “And I’ve said that every day since to the media, to them, to anyone who would listen. SAG-AFTRA is ready, willing and able to return to the bargaining table.

“The only reason we aren’t there now is because those companies said that they didn’t want to deal with people who were uncivilized and because those companies said they wouldn’t be ready to talk for quite some time,” added Crabtree-Ireland.

Many actors Tuesday cast the strike in personal terms. Slater said the union’s health care helped sustain his father’s life. Slater’s father, the actor Michael Hawkins, died last November. Liza Colón-Zayas, the 51-year-old Bronx-born actor of the Hulu hit series “The Bear,” said her lifetime of hard work isn’t paying off.

“I have struggled 35 years to get here only to find residuals have dwindled exponentially,” said Colón-Zayas. “If you can announce the highest-viewed this and the highest profits in that, then you can track our residuals. So we need to come to the table but we need to come to the table in good faith that there will be transparency in how we are being paid by streaming. We need you to open the books.”

  • Rachel Zegler cast in ‘Hunger Games’ prequel as Lucy Gray Baird

    By IANS

LOS ANEGLES: ‘West Side Story’ actor Rachel Zegler is set to star in ‘The Hunger Games’ prequel ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’.

Zegler had prompted speculation about her casting after she tweeted on Monday night: “Listen up.. can y’all grow restfully? are you becoming an individual resting decisively?” As eagle-eyed fans pointed out, the first letter of each word in her tweet spells out the main character’s name, Lucy Gray Baird.

    — rachel zegler (she/her/hers) (@rachelzegler) May 31, 2022
The movie is being adapted from Suzanne Collins’ 2020 book of the same name, which takes place decades before Katniss Everdeen’s adventures in ‘The Hunger Games’, reports ‘Variety’.

That means Jennifer Lawrence, who shot to superstardom as the Girl on Fire, does not appear in the prequel story.

Instead, ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ centres on Coriolanus Snow, an ambitious boy who eventually becomes the tyrannical leader of the dystopian country of Panem.

As previously announced, Tom Blyth (‘Billy the Kid’ and ‘The Gilded Age’) will play the young Snow.

In the upcoming movie, 18-year-old Snow is chosen to mentor Lucy Gray, the female tribute from the impoverished District 12, during the 10th Hunger Games.

As introduced in ‘The Hunger Games’ trilogy, which were developed into four feature films, the barbaric televised event randomly selects two teenagers from each district to fight to the death.

In the novel, the unassuming Lucy Gray sparks everyone’s attention by singing during the reaping ceremony. With her talent and charm, Snow believes he may be able to turn the odds in their favour to win the games.

Given Lucy Gray’s vocal prowess, it’s no surprise that Zegler, who beat out thousands to star as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed ‘West Side Story’ remake, landed the lead role in ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’.

Zegler will appear next in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ alongside Zachary Levi, Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu; and Disney’s live-action ‘Snow White’.

“When you read Suzanne’s book, Lucy Gray’s emotional intelligence, physical agility, and fiercely powerful, determined singing voice shine through. Rachel embodies all of those skills – she is the perfect choice for our Lucy Gray,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Nathan Kahane.

‘Hunger Games’ veteran Francis Lawrence returned to direct the upcoming film, which will begin production later this year. Michael Arndt, who wrote the franchise’s second installment ‘Catching Fire’, was intended to write the screenplay, but he’s passed on duties to Michael Lesslie (‘Macbeth’, starring Michael Fassbender).

“Like everybody, I first saw Rachel Zegler in ‘West Side Story,’ and like everybody, I knew I was watching a star who would command the screen for a generation,” said Francis Lawrence.

“Lucy Gray is a perfect match for her as an actress: the character is bold, independent and defiant, but also vulnerable, emotional and loving. Rachel will make this character unforgettable.”

Franchise producer Nina Jacobson and her producing partner Brad Simpson will oversee the latest ‘Hunger Games’ installment, along with Francis Lawrence. Collins, Tim Palen and Jim Miller will serve as executive producers.

“Lucy Gray is an incredibly complex character, a performer who has to use every skill in her arsenal to survive,” Jacobson said. Our casting team, Deb Zane and Dylan Jury, spearheaded an exhaustive search, reading hundreds of actors in search of our perfect Lucy Gray.

That search ended when Rachel Zegler blew the roof off with her depth and breadth of talent as an actor, singer and performer. Rachel is utterly compelling; just like Lucy Gray, her voice and charisma command the stage while her inner strength and humanity transform those around her.”

‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ will be released in theatres on November 17.

  • ‘West Side Story’ star Rachel Zegler reveals she wasn’t invited to the Oscars

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: Actor Rachel Zegler has revealed that she will not be at the Oscars to support “West Side Story” as she was not invited to the ceremony on Sunday.

The Steven Spielberg directed musical is nominated for seven Oscars, including the best picture at the movie gala.

Zegler plays the role of Maria in Spielberg’s ambitious new adaptation of the 1957 musical of the same name, which was later turned into a successful Hollywood movie in 1961.

Zegler spoke about the missing invite when a fan asked her what she planned to wear for the Oscars.

“I’m not invited so sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel,” the actor said in her reply.

The comments left many of the actor’s fans angry as it is normal for stars to attend the ceremony to support the film even if they did not receive a nomination.

The actor later wrote, “IDK y’all I have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be happening. I will root for ‘West Side Story’ from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did 3 years ago. I hope some last-minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, I guess. thanks for all the shock and outrage, I’m disappointed, too. but that’s OK. So proud of our movie.”

The 94th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 27

  • Rachel Zegler didn’t expect to land Snow White role

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: Actress Rachel Zegler has revealed that she was never expecting to land the role of ‘Snow White’ in Disney’s live-action remake of the classic story.

The 20-year-old actress will play the titular role in Disney’s live-action remake of the iconic fairytale.

In a conversation with Andrew Garfield for Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors’ series, she said: “Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me.

“You don’t normally see Snow Whites that are of Latin descent. Even though Snow White is really a big deal in Spanish-speaking countries. ‘Blancanieves’ is a huge icon whether you’re talking about the Disney cartoon or just different iterations and the Grimm fairy tale and all the stories that come with it.

“But you don’t particularly see people who look like me or are me playing roles like that.”

Zegler’s casting as the classic character sparked a backlash from some users on social media but the ‘West Side Story’ star says she is determined to win over them with her performance in the film, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

She recalled: “When it was announced, it was a huge thing that was trending on Twitter for days, because all of the people were angry. We need to love them in the right direction. At the end of the day, I have a job to do that I’m really excited to do. I get to be a Latina princess.”

The live-action remake of ‘Snow White’ has also caused controversy after criticism from actor Peter Dinklage, who suffers from a form of dwarfism known as achondroplasia, which took him at the story’s “f**ing backwards” depiction of dwarfs.

He said: “Literally no offence to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. But you’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me.

“You’re progressive in one way but then you’re still making that f***ing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f*** are you doing, man?”

  • Comparisons with Natalie Wood inevitable: Rachel Zegler on ‘West Side Story’

    By PTI

MUMBAI: Actor Rachel Zegler, who steps into the shoes of legendary star Natalie Wood to play Maria in Steven Speilberg’s adaptation of “West Side Story”, said her intention is not to overshadow the legacy of the late actor.

The musical romantic drama brings back the classic tale of forbidden love between Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Zegler) in 1950s New York City despite having affiliations with rival street gangs — the Jets and Sharks.

The film is an adaptation of the famed 1957 Broadway musical of the same title, which was earlier turned into a 1961 film, featuring Wood as Maria.

Zegler said she is aware that there are going to be comparisons between her and Wood but she has focused on adding a fresh take to the character.

“I think any film is a challenge, if it’s easy, you don’t care. And I care a lot about the story. The story informed me as a kid what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I knew comparison was inevitable when it came to myself and the late great Natalie Wood.

“I think that the original film stands on its own, as this iconic piece of film history, that everybody’s going to refer to for the rest of time. And that was very present in my mind,” the 20-year-old actor, who is making her debut with ‘West Side Story’, said during the virtual global press conference of the film, also attended by PTI.

Zegler also shared that she didn’t revisit the original film because she thought it might add unnecessary pressure on her.

“I didn’t revisit the material as I didn’t want to compare in my own mind. I think that adds unnecessary pressure. I just wanted to do a good job. And that’s really all we wanted to accomplish. It wasn’t like, ‘Am I going to overshadow the legacy of a late great actress?’ That was never the intention.

It was about what I can bring from my own life experience that wasn’t there before,” Zegler said.

In addition to Zegler, Spielberg’s version of ‘West Side Story’ stars Ansel Elgort as Tony, Ariana DeBose as Anita and David Alvarez as Bernardo.

Veteran actor Rita Moreno, who won the best supporting actress Oscar for her role of Anita in the original, will be seen as Valentina, a new character.

Zegler and her co-star David Alvarez also talked about the importance of Latino representation in the film.

“I am the first Latina to play Maria on screen and that’s a huge thing. It’s a part of a legacy of a very important musical to so many people that’s not lost on me. We all come in different shades, different walks of life,” Zegler said.

Alvarez said the film is “a huge step forward”.

“What Steven Spielberg has done and what this whole production has done is what the past generations had failed to do. I think it’s changing everything. And this is kind of like leading by example, and I think it’s just opening so many doors for the future. So, this is incredible for us to be leading this and it’s thanks to Steven’s vision,” he added.

DeBose said, “We don’t want to validate all of these lived experiences and showing that and celebrating a diaspora. I think our film does a really good job of that and I’m really proud.”

“West Side Story” is set to bow out theatrically on December 10.

  • Disney sets Rachel Zegler as lead for ‘Snow White’ live-action remake

She will also feature in Warner Bros/DC Films’ “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”, co-starring Zachary Levi.

Described as a fresh take on the 1937 classic, the new movie will be directed by Marc Webb, the filmmaker behind 2009 hit “500 Days of Summer” and two “Amazing Spider-Man” films, reported Variety.

“Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts.

Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale,” Webb said in a statement.

The original movie, titled “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”, was based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale and released in 1937.

It was Disney’s first animated feature film.

Besides “Snow White”, Disney is also working on live-action remakes of “The Little Mermaid”, “Pinocchio”, and “Lilo and Stitch” as well as a prequel to its 2019 reimagining of “The Lion King”.
