  • In a show of strength, nearly 60 Congress MLAs turn up at Punjab Congress chief Sidhu’s home

AMRITSAR: In what is seen as a show of strength, nearly 60 Congress MLAs gathered at the residence of new state party chief Navjot Singh Sidhu here on Wednesday, amid suspense over a possible truce between him and CM Amarinder Singh.

The Congress has 80 MLAs in the state Assembly.

Sidhu and Amarinder Singh have been at loggerheads for the past some time, with the Amritsar (East) MLA recently attacking the CM over the desecration cases.

The chief minister was also averse to his appointment as the state Congress chief.

After Sidhu’s elevation, the CM had said that he won’t meet him until the cricketer-turned-politician apologised for his “derogatory” tweets against him.

Among the ministers who reached here were Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Charanjit Singh Channi and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria besides outgoing state unit chief Sunil Jakhar.

The MLAs joined by Sidhu boarded luxury buses and went to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple, where a large number of Congress supporters gathered.

They also went to the Durgiana temple and Ram Tirath Sthal here.

After paying obeisance at the Golden temple, Jakhar told reporters, “We sought blessings for a prosperous Punjab, in which we all contribute together.

” On Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s stance that he will not meet Sidhu till he publicly tenders an apology, some MLAs said there was no need for it.

Minister Randhawa, who was behind organising things here, told reporters he was surprised at the “behaviour” of the chief minister.

Sidhu’s elevation as state unit chief has to be respected and accepted by all, irrespective of whatever differences there might have been in the past, he said.

Randhawa said even senior leader Partap Singh Bajwa and Sukhpal Singh Khaira earlier were at loggerheads with Amarinder Singh but now they have sunk their differences.

“Why can’t the chief minister sink his differences with Sidhu,” Randhawa asked.

MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra said Sidhu will formally assume the charge of the state party chief at Chandigarh on Friday and expects the chief minister to be present at the event.

Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said, “I think at this level, leaders should not ask each other to apologise.”

Pargat Singh also said there was no need for Sidhu to apologise. “I have always said it cannot be a fight between personalities. The fight was about issues,” said Pargat, a former India hockey captain.

On Tuesday, scores of Congress workers and Sidhu supporters had accorded a warm welcome to Sidhu when he arrived here after being appointed the state party chief.

The party workers have put up posters of Sidhu at many places in the city.

Some party MLAs and supporters here claimed that nearly 60 legislators reached here after they were asked by Sidhu to reach Amritsar for paying obeisance at the Golden Temple and other shrines.

MLA Madan Lal Jalalpur told reporters, “The 2022 elections will be won by the Congress in Sidhu’s name and because of him. Today, entire Punjab wants him. There is great enthusiasm among party workers after Sidhu’s elevation. Our vote share will certainly go up,” he said.

On differences between Sidhu and Amarinder Singh, Jalalpur said, “The chief minister should welcome Sidhu with open arms. The chief minister also met Pratap Singh Bajwa who had been speaking against him. But Amarinder Singh’s advisers are not guiding him properly.”

On Tuesday, the Punjab chief minister’s media adviser had trashed media reports that Sidhu had sought time to meet Amarinder Singh.

The media adviser also said there was no change in stance, asserting that the CM will not meet Sidhu till he publicly tenders an apology for his “derogatory” tweets against him.

However, Jalalpur said there was no need for Sidhu to apologise, saying he is now the president of the state Congress.

“Why should he apologise. It is right that he should respect and he respects the chief minister but for what should he apologise,” asked Jalalpur.

There has been no reaction from the CM over Sidhu’s elevation as the state Congress chief.

Earlier, senior Congress leader and cabinet minister Brahm Mahindra had ruled out any personal meeting with Sidhu till he resolves his issues with Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

Before going to Amritsar, Sidhu had been calling on ministers and legislators in Chandigarh to mobilise support in the past few days.

Sidhu had already met several ministers and MLAs.

After taking over as the state unit chief of the Congress, Sidhu had talked about the Punjab model, saying it will make the state prosperous again.

“An 18-point programme given by the Congress high command will make every Punjabi a shareholder and the power given by the people be returned in the shape of development,” he had said.

  • Amidst speculations, Navjot Singh Sidhu meets Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar

CHANDIGARH: Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu met Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sunil Jakhar on Saturday, amid mounting speculation over whether the party will appoint the cricketer-turned-politician as the next head of its state unit.

After the meeting, which lasted more than half-an-hour, Sidhu said Jakhar is his elder brother and a guiding force.

Jakhar, in turn, described Sidhu as a capable man.

Sidhu left his residence in Patiala and reached Jakhar’s residence in Panchkula about 65 km away at around 10:45 am, an aide said.

The meeting comes in the backdrop of simmering tensions in the Punjab Congress following differences between Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Sidhu.

On Friday, Sidhu met party chief Sonia Gandhi at her residence in New Delhi in an apparent bid to arrive at a truce formula over the state unit revamp.

Also present at the meeting were AICC general secretary in-charge of Punjab Harish Rawat and Rahul Gandhi.

Sources said reports of Sidhu’s elevation had irked Amarinder Singh and he had written to Sonia Gandhi expressing strong resentment over the developments.

  • Amarinder-Sidhu row: Sonia Gandhi sets up three-member panel to resolve differences among leaders in Punjab

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday set up a three-member committee to resolve differences among its leaders in Punjab amid an open war of words between Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and his former cabinet colleague Navjot Singh Sidhu.

The panel comprising of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge as chairman, with AICC general secretary in-charge for Punjab affairs Harish Rawat and J P Aggarwal will meet for the first time on Saturday morning at the party headquarters here.

The committee comes in the wake of infighting and factionalism within the Punjab unit of the Congress ahead of 2022 assembly elections in the state.

Sources said the panel was formed by Sonia Gandhi late last night but was not announced publicly.

Confirming the development, Rawat said the panel is tasked with the twin objectives of strengthening the party and government in Punjab and resolving differences within the party leaders in the state.

“Our primary mandate is to strengthen the government and the party at the grassroots level and to help unite the Congress in Punjab and ensure its victory in the 2022 assembly polls,” Rawat told PTI.

He said the three leaders will meet on Saturday at the AICC headquarters to work out modalities on how to go about fulfilling its objectives.

“We would be talking to former party presidents and other key leaders in Punjab on how to strengthen the party and resolve any differences among state leaders,” the former Uttarakhand chief minister said.

Amarinder Singh and Sidhu have been at loggerheads in the recent past and Sidhu has publicly criticised the chief minister.

“We will urge the leaders in Punjab not to air their grievances and views against each other in public and in the media, and instead raise their issues within the party forums,” he said.

He added that the committee will meet all MLAs, MPs and sitting and former presidents of the state unit as well as prominent leaders to know what needs to be done to set things right and ensure the party’s victory in the next assembly elections.

The sources said the three-member panel will meet the chief minister as well as Sidhu who have gone public against each other.
