  • COVID-19: Pune district achieves 100 per cent first dose vaccination target

    PUNE: Pune has become the second district in Maharashtra to achieve 100 per cent administration of the first dose of anti-coronavirus vaccines after Mumbai, officials said on Wednesday.

    As per the data shared by the district administration, the total population of Pune (district) is 1,13,53,633 and the targeted population (above 18) for the first dose was 83,42,700.

    However, the actual number of people who were given the doses was 83,44,544.

    The estimation about the percentage is based on the 2019 voters list, the authorities said.

    As far as the second dose is concerned, the district has achieved 65.7 per cent target as a total of 54,82,018 people have been administered both doses.

  • West Maharashtra reports more COVID-19 cases despite highest vaccination

    MUMBAI:  Western Maharashtra has the highest number of active Covid-19 cases in the state despite vaccinations being maximum in that region. The state has 1.61 lakh active cases at present, a majority of which are from the western districts. Pune has the highest number of 19,275 active cases, while Kolhapur has 17,822 patients. Satara and Sangli districts have 11,232 and 9,855 active cases, respectively.

    These are the same districts that have vaccinated the highest percentage of their populations, according to data availavle with Maharashtra’s health department. A total 2.46 crore people have been vaccinated in Maharashtra so far. Kolhapur has achieved 66.64 per cent vaccination, which is the highest in the state, while its positivity rate was 16.06 per cent last week.

    In Sangli, 59.74 per cent people have been administered the jabs, while the district’s positivity rate was 6.09 per cent. In Satara, 58.77 per cent people have been inoculated and the positivity rate was 6.94 per cent. Pune’s positivity rate was 11.91 per cent, although 50.94 per cent people have been vaccinated there.Maharashtra’s average positivity rate last week was 5.98 per cent. Average vaccination was 38.51 per cent.

    Dr Avinash Supe, a member of the state health task force and former dean of KEM Hospital in Mumbai, said it was true that Pune (Rural), Kolhapur, Satara and Sangli were among the six districts reporting high positivity rates despite a large number of vaccinations. 

    “However, we have to check this very minutely…As of now, I do not see any correlation between vaccine doses adminstered and the high number of cases. But we have to check it in detail by conducting more ground-level studies,” he said.

    He said that those from affluent sections may be taking vaccines, while people in the rural and poorer regions are getting infected. “However, unless a comprehensive study is conducted, it will be wrong to say anything with certainty,” Dr Supe added.

  • Maharashtra coronavirus: Pune’s control room gets 900 calls every day as cases surge

    PUNE: Amid the rise in COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) COVID War Room/Control Room has been receiving over 900 calls on a daily basis, said Dr Jeevan Chaudhary, Medical Officer at the control room.

    Speaking to ANI, the medical officer said, “We are receiving 900 calls every 24 hours among which 600 are received in the day time and 300 in the night. The calls have increased because some patients call multiple times for inquiry of beds or other medical facilities.”

    About 18 executives are working in the Control room to answer the calls around the clock. The patient’s details are bifurcated based on their oxygen level and age. Accordingly, a priority is set for the allotment of beds, said Dr Chaudhary.

    “We are allotting beds based on age and oxygen levels. Based on the age and oxygen levels, we check with the complexities and determine the condition of the patient before the allotment of beds. Around 225 patients have been allotted beds as of now. The most number of calls received are for ICU and ventilator beds. Currently, we are facing a shortage of ventilator beds and ICU but our team is working on increasing the number of such beds,” he added.

    Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported the highest daily new cases at 51,751 in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday. It further said that the state saw the maximum casualties at 258 in the last 24 hours.

    India’s total Active Caseload has reached 12,64,698. It now comprises 9.24 per cent of the country’s total positive cases. A net incline of 63,689 cases recorded from the total active caseload in the last 24 hours, informed the ministry. 97,168 recoveries were registered in the last 24 hours. The country recorded 879 deaths, it added. 

  • Huge crowd at Pune’s APMC market despite surge in COVID-19 cases

    PUNE: Amid a rapid increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) market in Pune witnessed a huge crowd on Tuesday.

    Abdul Qadar, a vegetable vendor, said: “People are coming here to buy vegetables and fruits. That cannot be controlled. To control and manage the crowd, lockdown is the only option. We are taking precautions on our level. What else we can do? We are poor, have to earn a living. We cannot afford to sit back at home from the fear of Corona.”

    “I came to purchase fruits and vegetables but now I fear for my life as the market is so crowded and people are not following COVID-19 guidelines,” said a local.

    Ashfaq, a fruit vendor said, “We do fear the pandemic but everyone needs to eat. People come here to buy fruits and vegetables and we come here to earn a living. The market is crowded because fruits and vegetables in other markets are costlier. Here they are available at affordable prices. We take precautions and continue to do our work despite the rise in cases.”

  • Pune 12-hour curfew begins, BJP protests for bus services

    PUNE: The BJP held a protest on Saturday demanding resumption of municipal transport bus services as a 6 pm to 6 am curfew began in Pune in a bid to tackle a recent surge in COVID-19 cases.

    Pune BJP MP Girish Bapat and Pune BJP president Jagdish Mulik led the party’s protest in front of the PMPML bus depot at Swargate, police said, adding that they were detained and released some time later.

    “The decision to not run Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited’s buses will impact people who work in factories, banks, hospitals etc. The state government must not misuse its power to impose such restrictions in the name of tackling COVID-19,” Bapat said.

    The decision to impose 6 pm to 6 am curfew in Pune from April 3 for seven days was taken a after review meeting chaired by state Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday.

    The COVID-19 tally in Pune increased by a record 9,086 in a 24-hour period ending Friday, taking the district’s tally to 5,51,508.
