    Express News Service

AHMEDABAD:  The ongoing probe into the Morbi bridge tragedy prima facie found a series of lapses in its renovation, including failure to carry out its structural audit, poor choice of materials and the absence of an emergency rescue and evacuation plan.

Public prosecutor Harsendu Panchal flagged them to press for remand of all the nine accused arrested in the case. But Chief Judicial Magistrate M J Khan remanded four of them two managers of the Oreva group and two sub-contractors who had repaired the bridge in police custody till Saturday.

Panchal told this newspaper on Wednesday that prima facie the cables of the bridge were left untouched; only its wooden flooring was replaced with aluminum sheet. “The cables could have given way due to the additional weight of aluminum. It is a matter of investigation,” he said he told the court on Tuesday.

Additional Public Prosecutor Morbi Harshendu Panchal said the contract was awarded to Oreva, which assigned it to two unqualified persons. This was the third time Oreva bagged its renovation and maintenance contract.

A forensics lab (FSL) report submitted in court said the four main cables of the bridge were old. “In the FSL report, IO (Investigating Officer) said that the cable (of bridge) was rusting away. Prima facie, FSL officer says that it was an old cable. IO says only flooring of the bridge and not the cables were changed. Oiling-greasing, too, wasn’t done. Besides, the contractors did not have the necessary domain knowhow,” Panchal said.

Anchor pinDue to the extra weight of revellers, the anchor pin of the bridge at the Darbargarh end of the bridge broke. “The anchor pin capacity was 125, but more than 350 were on the bridge on Sunday when it the bridge gave way,” a police officer said

    By PTI

LONDON:  British star Jodie Comer will make her debut at West End with the one-woman play “Prima Facie”.

The stage show comes from Suzie Miller and is directed by Justin Martin.

The performances will begin from April 15, 2022 at the Harold Pinter Theatre and end on June 18, 2022, as per The Guardian.

Comer, 28, will play Tessa in this one-person play, a young, brilliant barrister who loves to win and has worked her way up from working-class origins to be at the top of her game, prosecuting, cross-examining and lighting up the shadows of doubt in any case.

Comer, who won an Emmy for role as Villanelle in popular series “Killing Eve”, most recently featured in Ryan Reynolds-led “Free Guy” and Ridley Scott’s “The Last Duel”, co-starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Ben Affleck.

The actor will next be seen in Scott’s “Kitbag”, in which she is essaying the role of Napoleon Bonaparte’s beloved Josephine opposite Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix.

  • Cremating victim’s body at night ‘infringement’ of her human rights, says Allahabad HC

The decision of cremating the Hathras victim’s body in the night is an “infringement” of her human rights, said Allahabad High Court on Tuesday (October 13).

The Bench, which took suo moto cognizance of the Hathras incident and heard the case on Monday, said that the victim was at least entitled to decent cremation in accordance with her religious customs and rituals which essentially are to be performed by her family. This action of the State Authorities, though in the name of law and order situation, is prima facie an infringement upon the human rights of the victim and her family,” the Bench stated in its order.

We would like to hear the then Hathras SP, Vikrant Vir on the next date. It is open for the then Hathras SP, Vikrant Vir and District Magistrate Praveen Kumar Laxkar to file their respective affidavits containing their versions in the matter,” the Bench said.

The 19-year-old had succumbed to her injuries at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on September 29 after being assaulted and allegedly gang-raped in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras on September 14.
